have become the status quo. We broke many records !
The workers were excellent and rose to the challenge and took
on this safety culture. They are very well trained.
The hardest obstacle at NSP was getting the required work done
without enough spare parts, without enough manpower and sometimes not enough time to complete the job.
My co-workers and customers were the best part of the job.
Keeping them satisfied was the real joy at NS Power.

Tenured employees are leaving and hiring for new call centre reps is a revolving door. Customers can’t get good service because scheduling can’t get crews to show up for jobs. If you’re building, don’t bother calling the call centre, they can’t get you a date. Really top heavy, a lot of management should be busier.... Front line extremely busy. 42 year old Co worker just took heart attack. Performance management is ambiguous so targets are more “feeling” about someone than actual met targets. Working all of the time during bad weather. You can not refuse. Cannot be single parent working there. 5 sick days per year, no family or personal days  and that’s all. If you get 6 sick days in a year, you are made to feel like you could be fired. Very third party call centre feeling there. Went really downhill in the last year.  Not well managed. Not a good place to work.

Made above average wage with good benefits and a shares option. Schedule for Power Engineers is great (4/6). Unfortunately, with the transition away from coal the experience in the generating stations is going downhill fast. Seem to be taking every opportunity to shed "extra" union personnel so retraining costs are mitigated. Lots of investigations and even spying by corporate security have been reported. They have senseless sick time policies and will request Dr's notes even if you don't break them. Funny thing is most of the issues seem to be generated by middle management and not upper management who have done a better than expected job of being transparent during early stages of transition.

All that being said, co-workers working on the transmission side seem to have far more favourable opinions.

My passion is leading people.  Being part of the senior leadership team I have lead large groups and have acquired the skills and behaviors to transition the organization into a productive, growing company. The hardest part of my job is influences other leaders on employee relations. The most enjoyable part of my roles have been leading power restoration efforts in major outage events.

I am currently a student on my work placement at this facility. I job shadow a few employees, help them complete their rounds of the power plant, recording temperatures, pressures, and conducting daily tests. I also aide in the lock out tag out procedures. I get to spend some time in the control room every day to observe situational issues that may arise. My co-workers are great, they are very helpful and answer any questions I may have. The plant consist of 4 different units, one of which is now down for yearly maintenance. This allows me to view the inside of the boiler, as well at the turbine, which has the shell completely removed. The Generator rotor was removed last week, which was very interesting and beneficial to see.

A typical day starts with a safety meeting to be aware of any safety issues or concerns (people place things). Then work orders and jobs are discussed and issued, then a job risk assessment form is filled out before tasks are started( reassessed throughout the job). I have learned a lot with my time at Nova Scotia Power Inc., training courses on safety, risk assessment, risk management, scaffolding, confined space awareness, how  to work with and for others, time constraints, work flow, critical path. New and different things was the most enjoyable part of the job.

Great office and location being close to the harbour is very cool. It is a good office space and the free gym is really great for those who use it. Overall Emera has a very positive corporate culture.  They are not perfect, all the time but they are working on how to continue to get better and seem to use their employee surveys and actually listen to staff. 

There are lots of very smart people working at Emera and there is opportunity to challenge yourself and learn. They support courses and education if it makes sense for your role. 

It's a fast paced environment where everyone works hard and has a lot of dedication to ensuring that the power stays on. On the negative side, management doesn't tend to spend the time really getting to know what their employees do and therefore put unreasonable expectations on them and/or minimize staffing levels to a point where it's impossible to keep up with the work load.  My most enjoyable part of the job was getting to know the hundreds of power line technicians, wiring inspectors, customer service field reps, and regional planners who work tirelessly to provide the best customer service that they can in a very challenging and sometimes dangerous environment.

People - for the most part are friendly and helpful within your OWN Department 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
no support from Supervisors that have been in same position for over 15 years 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It’s a you versus them mentality and the culture isn’t helpful or supportive. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Arrive to shift and get screamed at, sworn at, ridiculed and belittled by customers. No Support for personal matters, expected to do OT at any offer and questioned why you don’t.

My usual day at work went by checking my emails, printing invoices, and putting the invoices into the software. I learned about the Jonas software for accounts payable and purchase orders. I learned how to manage heavy loads of work with my time management skills. All of the employees were friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The end of every month was very difficult. There was a great pressure to meet the deadline. I enjoyed the environmental safety meetings. They had quizzes and it was overall very fun.
