While reffing it is mandatory to arrive thirty minutes prior to a game; dressed in a casual dress shirt, tie, dress pants, dress shoes and jacket to look the part of a referee. Usually on average we would receive anywhere from 5 to 18 games per week; each ranging from one hour to two hours in game length. The people I have had the pleasure to officiate with were outstanding and everybody got along well with each other. The referee-in-chief and referee assignor were also very diligent by being strict with certain protocols and procedures while being fair to each official and creating a fun environment. The hardest part of reffing was the parents as they could get quite out of hand and rowdy, however it was quite easy to ignore them by focusing on the task at hand. The job was very flexible and worked around my schedule as I had the ability [before games were assigned] to pick and choose which day I was available and when I was not. The exercise and pay was an added bonus while the officiating team definitely summed up the most enjoyable part since it was easy to meet and bond with others.

The Days started early, which was fine but because there were so many young refs there were not a whole lot of hours to go around. The shifts that you did get were fun, working with people your own age, from your own community usually meant that you got along with your co-workers quite well. the hardest part of the job was definitely, dealing with parents, coaches and players who are all new to OMHA organized hockey. there is usually a lot of protest to a referees decisions especially with the rules regarding contact. no one wants to see their kid get hurt so when there is a collision and no call, parents get upset.

I enjoy my time working for the OMHA because it was a fun way for me to make money as a young teenager. I would typically arrive around 30 minutes before a game. Once the game starts, as a 15 year old, I get yelled at for a solid 40 minutes straight by parents who think their kids are going to be future nhlers. It was the worst part but I have become better at blocking out the noise.

Typically officiate around 8-12 games weekly ranging in ages from 4-18+, Hours are very flexible meeting all needs and management is understanding always trying to have your back. Only issue is with coaches and fans where they can get very verbal about your performance.

If you are interested in hockey and have good customer service skills this job will satisfy you. If you hate sitting still and shy away from strangers, you need to look elsewhere

OMHA was a very good employer for a student, as the hours were very flexible. The pay was also very good for a student. The job was a little stressful at times, dealing with coaches shouting.

Being a referee can be very stressful especially if you are young. It is a great way to earn extra money and will allow you to pick your hours. I would recommend this job to other young hockey players.

Had a great few years here reffing. Worked here before as a timekeeper. Only complaint is you don’t get very many hours only work weekends and sometimes work with people who don’t know what they’re doing.
