ONTARIO CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE

This place is mostly coordinators, some managers, a few directors, and an executive team of 6.
There is no advancement opportunity here, the org is pretty flat and promotions rarely happen. While the company works with innovative start-ups, OCE isn't innovative itself. It's risk-averse, very serious, and very government-oriented. 

A great place if: you don't want upward movement (to move up, you have to leave the organization, so don't be prepared to stay), if you want experience working with start-ups (and when you meet one you really like, try and get a job there!), you dislike change and a lot of variety.

Working as a programs coordinator at OCE is a very busy post.  As OCE grows in the number of programs it delivers, so does the workload. Working with all the program managers allows you to adapt to various managerial sytles.

This company culture is the worst. The company will suck your soul and feel like you haven't done anything over your time there. Salaries are 'ok' and benefits are good. No challenge working here - but they need to hire PHDs because only they can push papers around.

Ontario Centres of Excellence has been renamed as Ontario Centres of Innovation since 2021.  The corporate culture, leadership and management have changed significantly.  This review is solely for Ontario Centres of Excellence prior to the change

I enjoyed my role dealing with several industry contacts, academic departments and professors, research centres, municipalities and Economic Development departments.
The objectives of OCE is economic benefit to ON

-a very rewarding employment
-able to meet various stakeholders on daily basis
-very adaptable to new changes
-great social committee team

Good supporter of academic innovation and innovators.  Senior management was an issue, but many of the projects supported were really helpful to the recipients

Ontario Centres of Excellence seemed to operate inefficiently. The culture did not seem very transparent and the executive team was not easy to approach.

No appreciation for extra hard working people. Nepotism. No real connect between promotions and skills/results. lack of support when an employees voices a concern.

OCE has some great staff, but they really need to change their exec team and the whole way the place is managed. It's retroactive and stunting, not innovative at all.
