ONTARIO COLLEGE OF TRADES

Worked at the college when it first opened. I was a temp thru an agency at this time. Took over for their first receptionist who went on medical leave about 4 months into her job, and my temp contract was renewed on a WEEKLY basis for 7 or so months (ie “hey Manager, do I come in on Monday or am I out of a job?” - literally every Friday). Management had to put me on a contract (not through the temp agency) because they kept me as a temp for so long that the union was about to get involved. They put me in as an “admin coordinator” but I was still just a glorified receptionist. Then they hired a new temp to be the “receptionist” and I trained him. He was awful at the job, but they ended up hiring him permanently, while I got stuck in a month-to-month contract. He immediately went on short-term leave for 4 months, and I got stuck being both receptionist and admin coordinator during that time, and it was pretty stressful. I didn’t get paid nearly enough for the messes I had to deal with ($14.25 an hour). Then he suddenly came back, and they literally gave me 1.5 days’ notice that my time with them had come to an end. My coworkers were great, but the management was awful.

An excellent place to work. OCOT requires nothing but excellent from their employees. One must be hard-working, efficient, quick-thinking, motivated, have strong attention to detail, and the ability to communicate in a friendly, yet diplomatic manner with clients.

A typical day is fast-paced, frequent talks with members, requirement to continuously problem-solve, work independently as well as with a team.

The most enjoyable part of the job is helping clients achieve their membership goals. The most difficult part of the job is when members and clients are making requests that cannot be met. 

The staff is excellent, management is organized and attentive to staff's needs.

Overall, a wonderful place to work.

•	Ontario College of Trades registry active and current. 
•	Apprentice 309a electrician with commercial construction 2 + years of experience (PCL and Kaneff commercial job sites including large scale nursing home recently completed).
•	Install conduit, wire, distribution, lighting and lighting controls communication cabling and related devices. 
•	Comfortable working in a team environment or alone. 
•	Very conscious and pro-active of safety hazards in the workplace.
•	Able to work shifts and weekends as required. 
•	WHIMS, worker’s health and safety and Fall Arrest certificates are valid and active. 
•	Enjoy working, and learning continuously.  
•	Understand policy, contracts, regulations and blueprints. 
•	Legal Studies: I am familiar with the hiring processes as well as the Human Rights Code.

I like working with the College of trades because they provided me with training when I had no experience or knowledge of trades and I also worked in another department for a few months which gave me some knowledge of how to properly do administrative work. I like that training was provided and experience didn't play too much of a role in the hiring process. They help a lot of employees to integrate successfully in the workplace with ease and support.

I was on a contract position @ OCAT. Nice Payroll team to work with . 
We were 5 of us, most of the work was shared. It was a Bibweekly payroll.
One person only set up new hires
2 of the team members were setting up Benefits, and cross checking validity of data
One specialist only keyed in the Vacation, Sick time, Mat leaves etc
2 Payroll specialusts keyed in/ imported the hours into the Payroll system
The Journal entry was done by another administrator. 

Overall, Ontario college of Trades was an excellent opportunity. learned a lot of valuable skills and experience. Unfortunately, it was contract based and no real opportunity for job security or advancement. also, because it was contract based, the salary/wages were low and there was no benefits. Overall, I really enjoyed my time being employed with Ontario college of Trades.

Great place to work with a very diverse group of people. Very busy environment with each day, learning something different. One of the great things about working here is having an opportunity to recognize your strengths and develop new strengths.

I enjoy working with a group of people dedicated to regulating Ontario's  skilled trades and apprenticeship system in the public interest. I learned a lot about the value of good governance in an organization.

I would do scanning the files into the system and photo copy and use the fax machine.  Also I would logged information into the spreadsheet. I would do filing, put the files back in the cabinet.

Good management, very supportive. Friendly co-workers. Very stressful having to deal with angry people all the time. Too bad Ford closed it down, it was better than what he threw together overnight and replaced it with.
