This place tries so hard to ensure you that we aren't a call center but we really are. We have similar turnover rates because of how poorly managed it is. I really used to love this place when I started and loved working and developing process improvements for the different roles. This place really took my ambition and just kept crushing it with their nasty, always blame down, always phones before work, kind of culture. I get told "there are people here who you can't make upset if you want to go anywhere" from what are supposed to be meetings on how I can improve with my work. I don't care about kissing someone's boots I want y work to speak for itself and just come in to work and work. They will ask you to help out with stuff then sit there and and get mad when you don;t give up more of your regular work to do these side projects but also then tell you that you need to keep up with your regular work as they refuse to take anything off of you to balance out all the work you take on. The only great thing is pay and benefits (thanks to awesome union reps) so if you just want that then join but you really need to be a wall to the games management plays. Please look elsewhere if you could

As said elsewhere, phones above all. Every year there's a new plan to handle it all, with senior staff exempted from ever picking up a phone.  Training for new or even seasoned employees is non-existent or ineffective. Imagine mandatory "role-playing" on different topics, which you somehow have to make-up if you miss, even for vacation.   Mgmt used to be a couple layers, now there's about 5, so rewards can be given out to certain people.  The buddies-first system has seen the same handful of  people rise through the layers ; we can predict who's getting the job long before it's announced.  In mid-January we're almost overdue for the 2024 promos.  Poor mgmt, and lots of it,  is the result. Perpetually inconsistent direction, with priorities and goals always changing.  If you are "in", you are set; you can't suffer any real consequences. If you're out, you stay out.  When a project fails, they rename it, spend more money and downplay the failures as years go by. When people leave this dept, even after 5, 10 even 20 years,  mgmt ignores their contributions, with few exceptions. Must mention that other areas will publish a goodbye messages.

Working at OPTrust has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The company fosters a collaborative work environment that encourages growth and learning. I was given ample opportunities to take on challenging projects, which helped me develop both professionally and personally. The leadership team is supportive and provides clear communication on expectations, which makes it easy to stay aligned with company goals.

One of the standout aspects of this job is the emphasis on work-life balance. The flexibility offered, particularly with hybrid or remote work options, allowed me to manage my workload efficiently while still having time for my personal life.

However, there is room for improvement in terms of employee recognition and career advancement pathways, as sometimes hard work can go unnoticed. Overall, OPTrust is a great place to build your career if you're looking for a positive culture and challenging opportunities

I've been working here for over a year and the negative reviews I see online are nothing like my experience. I have been welcomed and provided with the support I need to do my job well including opportunities to raise issues or get action when I needed it.  There was a period before I started where a lot of changes happened that impacted employees and I think if anything, these changes could have been better rolled out.  But in any change, there are opportunities to influence and I'm loving the openings we have to make positive things happen.  

Member experience executive leadership needs to be changed. Excuse after excuse, failed projects, wasted time and money. Your membership is suffering and staff are stressed, tired and unhappy. The VP of member experience needs to go, how can you fail so many times and continue. Member experience is run like a sweatshop lack of knowledge, experience and the lack of planning. The exodus of staff is due not to the pandemic but to the horrible executive member experience leadership. Very stressful environment where new hires leave within a month or two.

Company culture continues to be horrible. VP of  pensions continues to travel abroad even during a pandemic when the government has advised against it. There is no accountability to senior leaders. Nepotism continues throughout the organization. Stress remains at an all time high, revolving door. How can culture change if those have not been held accountable for previous favouritism. Organization is scared to payout senior and executive leadership. Change in middle management is need badly. Families are struggling to make ends meet, more work no pay increases. 

Optrust held a information session lead by the VP of pension operations and her daughter on what’s happening in the United States. Rather then making the discussion about inclusion and understanding that Canada is more then just black and white. Other visible minority groups were left out and voices of those that have faced hardships was dismissed. It was about her and her community. How could the organization’s leadership authorization this lack of diversity. Canada is made up of more diverse groups change must be inclusive to all

Working for this organization for years. Please be aware that this is not the best place to work. Managers are very secretive and the culture is horrible. Promotions go to a select few that have family connections to managers. Hiring is also based on family relationships and is not based on experience. The organization needs new managers and executive leadership.  Service delivery/member experience department is the worst of all. Don’t be fooled

Where do I start… If you’re looking for a professional place of employment with a well thought out strategic plan, minimal politics and a great work environment, KEEP LOOKING! OPTrust is full of favouritism, small cliques and certain staff members are “untouchable” and get away with their unprofessionalism and rudeness and the company is losing good employees because management just looks the other way and doesn’t seem to care. Morale is low. Leadership is lacking in most areas. It’s like the blind leading the blind. 

The pressure on performance is very high, judgments an unfair tactics are used by middle management. Work life balance is a myth. The organization works you to the bone even in a pandemic driving people seeking medical help. They talk about diversity but it’s only black and white all other marginalized and racialized communities are treated like non-important. Diversity is about more then white and black way more
