Oak Bay Beach Hotel

I had the opportunity to work for the OBBH for about 2 years. Although my position was part-time, I absolutely loved my co-workers and managers. I am not saying that everything was perfect (there is no such thing), but for what was important to me in a job (positive and collaborative relationships amongst my colleagues and managers, supportive management team, etc) it ticked off almost all the boxes. Perhaps, one of the biggest challenges I've had was pertaining to the consistency of my employment and the communication towards it, though once voiced, I was heard. All in all, I really miss this team and am so grateful for my work experience there.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Excellent place to work!!! The people are the best you will find anywhere

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There can be a few leaks now and then . The original contractor did a less than good job in regards to plumbing 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The people are great and very supportive 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Start early in the morning doing maintenance and finish early in the afternoon

Lots of good co workers, and a very good Human Recourses department. Typically pretty good about accommodating time off as well, with the exception of Christmas time being a little more difficult. most managers were great with the exception of some upper management that were involved more in the hotel side of the business but still did make decisions for the restaurant that often made little to no sense, likely due to lack of restaurant work experience. Overall one of the better place to work in the  service industry. 

Oak Bay is a fast-paced environment with a high turnover of staff. Coworkers are friendly and there is a great sense of community. Decent benefits and vacation time. Does not offer high salaries. Daily catered lunch and dinner in the breakroom is a nice touch. 

This company is awful to work for.  They do not compensate fairly, they are unclear about the compensation. The management is unprofessional and lacks basic understandings of running a successful business and up holding labour laws. They will tell you you have to come in when you are sick and unable. They allow inappropriate and abusive behaviour by higher up employees. 

Be aware of unfair working conditions; inability to opt out  of meal plan, unjust 'policies' to be able to provide sufficient notice for your requested time off, unfair treatment from impersonal management. Know your employee rights,  have knowledge of legalese & employment standards. 

This is an excellent hotel as a stepping stone into further career advancement.  The working culture here is amazing and as an employee, you are celebrated for your passion and strengths if you make yourself known. Career growth is limited given the boutique style and overall upper management style.

Oak Bay Beach Hotel is an amazing hotel that offers a wide range of experiences . From the Mineral baths to the spa , incredible dinning and fantastic rooms, Oak Bay Beach Hotel delivers .I cant say enough wonderful things about the staff and management that make Oak Bay Beach hotel what it is.

Staff and Managers very helpful and understanding of your needs. They support you if there are any difficulties. They are always willing and able to address any concerns. It is a complete team effort!!

Fun workplace because of co-workers, and some managers are also fun! A free staff meal is the best though. In terms of job/life balance, I would say it's okay because housekeeping is always busy so they need you most of the time - sometimes hard to book days off unless it's an emergency
