I saw the poor ratings when I applied and thought it was just bitter ex-employees but I was very very wrong. OTC presents really well to the general public, it is not until you are employed by them that you learn how truly horrible it can be. I spent a year at OTC and left the moment something else popped up. My only regret is leaving the friends that I made during my time there. 

The people who work the entry level positions are great for the most part, however management is a completely different story. 
The managers at OTC are somehow held to a lower standard despite being paid 2-3 times more than the employees they “manage”. I feel bad saying this as there are a couple managers who I genuinely liked and feel sorry that they are lumped in the same group with the horrible ones. 

Their motto “with us it’s personal” is very apparent in the way the management treats their staff, it is personal, not professional.  Many managers hold grudges and fail to maintain a professional demeanour (especially when dealing with conflict). There’s no possibility to work your way up at OTC and every “promotion” is a lateral move that results in the same salary, just under another manager. I feel extremely foolish for wasting a year here, when the skills that I learned at OTC were not transferable to any other company (unless you consider managing chronic stress and frustration as a transferrable skill). 

There is an extremely high turnover rate at OTC and because of this, most departments are consistently short-staffed. When an employee is terminated, be prepared to be asked to “temporarily” take over those unfulfilled roles (without compensation).  

Lastly, If you choose to work here, be prepared to have no sense of job security. OTC is a very concerning and toxic environment to spend 40 hours a week at, don’t let their sparkly “Alberta Top Employers” designation fool you, as this is primarily based on the benefits they provide (which admittedly seem impressive but not worth it for what you are asked to put up with). If you have any other opportunities, I would suggest visiting those first. Good luck!

Olympia has the potential to have a very enjoyable work place environment but sadly for me this was not the case. 

My time spent at Olympia was great in regards to the friends I made and the new skills I learned.

The biggest thing I learned working for this company is the list of every characteristic that I would not look for in a company. 

Most managers at this company have a fairly relaxed approach and do their jobs well which I can respect, but on my team specifically I experienced probably the worst workplace environment I have ever seen. Employees sent home in tears, toxicity, and not only micromanaging, but in the realm of bird dogging.

If your a toxic employee and you enjoy unprofessionalism then sign right up because you will be rewarded first. I saw good employees in this company that were over qualified being paid well below industry standard.

The systems used for your daily tasks are disorganized, incredibly inefficient and tedious. If you try and provide solutions to these issues you are shutdown. taking care of this issue would make employees happier as well as clients.

Working at Olympia was one of the darkest points of my career so far and I have been in many different offices. Like I said before Olympia has great potential but until these issues are addressed they will remain on their path of a downhill spiral. I wish the best for Olympia but this does not take away my disappointment. 

Olympia Financial Group is varied and dynamic workplace that actually consists of multiple companies under one umbrella. In my position, I interact with all of these companies and every day has been fast-paced with constant learning opportunities and exposure to different facets of the business.

The culture and requirements of each division is slightly different but I have found a good measure of satisfaction and job variety in my role. If you are interested in this company, I would research each business division as the experience, job satisfaction, and demands of one business will not be the same as another. 

Olympia is a smaller company of roughly 200+ employees, and we often have to take on multiple roles and responsibilities. Because of this, there are many opportunities to take charge and expand your horizons if you have innovative business ideas or technology solutions that you might not find in a larger organization. The benefit is that the job is always varied but the drawback is that the pace of change may sometimes feel too fast as there are many modernization initiatives.

In the local job market, working in a financial company or other service division can be more stable than the fluctuating oil & gas industry and would be recommended for those seeking some stability. I can attest that there are several long-term employees here who are loyal and dedicated to the company.

When I joined the Olympia team, I had put zero effort into my career goals.  I started as an Account Officer, where I was afforded the opportunity to work with and build trusted relationships with a group of a exempt market clients.  I was also partnered with a Coordinator, who acted as my right-arm by ensuring all documentation and transaction requirements were fulfilled.  The opportunity I was given by Olympia to work alongside and act as mentor to both my Coordinator and clients was the booster I needed to focus on my own career goals.  Nine years later, I’m one of several supervisors working with the very team I started with.  I have the daily privilege of working with a dynamic group of unique individuals, watching them discover their own potential.  My original Coordinator is now a Team Lead who’s focus is acting as a resource and support to her Supervisor.  Olympia Trust Company’s culture is summed up in our motto, “With Us It’s Personal.”  Employees are treated like people and not numbers, our team members rally to support each other and a work / life balance as well as personal development are encouraged.  I'm a proud member of the Olympia team and what a ride!

The culture sure looks good on the surface but don't be fooled, it is a very clicky group, the management/supervisor team are all friends and needless to say, someone of them have no business being in management, people get prompted based on whether they are liked by the management team versus their merits.
 In the time I was there, they must have fired at least 5-10 people for no good reason if you ask me.  It felt like a cult in there and you almost need to kiss up to people and god forbid you didn't stroke someone's ego who happened to be in management or friends with them, then you best to start looking for a new job because it is only a matter of time before they let you go.
There are good people there but unfortunately it is hard to tell who is real or who isn't.  Definitely not the great company they make themselves out to be.  I have worked for smaller and larger companies are have a much better culture and where your performance is actually based on your performance and personality and not whether you are friends with the management team or not...

It's a good place to work. The people are great and friendly. 

The work can be challenging at times but the people are very understanding. But depending on your department you will have to be kind of a self starter to learn your responsibilities. 

Pretty good work-to-life balance. Only occasionally are you asked to do something on the weekend and that's only if you agree. Lots of office space, even the cubicles too. It's downtown so there's many modalities for getting to work. They've been very accommodating to working from home during the lockdown of March 2020 to about July 2020 (i.e. the first Coronavirus wave).

The dress code is pretty forgiving even for wearing business casual so you don't have to break the bank on outfits to work and now after the lockdown the dress code is permanently Casual Friday so that's even better.

My fave part of the job would have to be whenever I can overcome a challenging situation and see it through and have some recognition for it.

I worked with this company for just under a year. I was first hired by great management, and the atmosphere was amazing! A few months later they got rid of the management who hired me, and brought in some old management. The entire atmosphere changed. I was singled out, and given the blame for things that I could not control. My manager made it clear that she didn’t like me, and seemed to have a target on my back. They would fire multiple people within weeks, so everyone would walk on egg shells. Manamgent would make inappropriate comments in regards to people personal lives. They expect you to stay late, and won’t pay over time. And if they do, it has to be pre approved by your manager, which is unlikely to happen. HR will always back up management first, it is unlikely that you will get them to help you. The only benefits of this place, was the people I worked with and the benefits of the job.

This company is absolutely horrible to work for. The senior management maintains a culture of fear. At staff meetings, we had to go around the table and vote which of our team members is the worst and least productive while we all sat in fear waiting to hear our teammates slander one another. 

I can say that all of my team members are concerned about job security daily which causes back stabbing and huge trust issues.

Compensation is poor, especially considering the mental abuse you experience daily.

Oh, and don't even think about filing a "confidential" complaint. All of the complaints go straight to upper management and you get canned.

They always claim to be in the "Top 100 Canadian Employers" and "Top 65 Albertan Employers" in their job ads... but check the dates! They haven't been on that list in several years.

Olympia has already proven that it is one of Alberta tops employers to me! They offer a health spending account that is a percentage of everyone's salary. This gives me the opportunity to customise my benefits and use them for things I actually need! Furthermore, the building has an onsite gym, which employees are given free access to. I chose to take advantage of this on my lunch breaks. They also have a canvas art program! Which is a super funky, and unique employee experience, that will allow me to personalize my office space with photos of my choosing. In my experience, the compensation has been incredibly fair and completive with the current market.
I would recommend family, friends and others in my network to work here - hands down.

Management is disrespectful, combative and extremely egotistical.  Complaints of ANY kind against the favored are met with arrogance, hostility and finger pointing in your direction.  Staff turnover is extreme and many qualified people have left in frustration due to managements inability to see the forest for the trees.

This particular department does a great job of selling itself, however, it doesn't take long to figure out that it's a den of snakes.

Not sure what kind of ceremony can be performed to excise the demons that dwell there.
