My experience was overwhelmingly negative. Management is extremely disorganized and unprofessional — they fire employees on a whim, often with little explanation, and always on Fridays, earning the nickname “Fire Friday.” The work environment is very political, and the culture overall is toxic.

As an intern, I learned very little beyond shadowing HR staff and coordinators with no real development opportunities. There’s a clear lack of genuine leadership or mentorship. Instead of investing in fair wages, bonuses, or career growth, management seems to prioritize events like holiday dinners for appearances’ sake.

Even getting to the location is a hassle due to the lift bridges, making the commute frustrating and time-consuming. Overall, this company cares more about image than people. I would not recommend Ontario Shipyards to anyone looking for a healthy or meaningful work experience. 


Work hours are long for the sake of it, with very little being achieved due to horrible planning. The layoff rates are honestly shocking, you have never worked in a workplace like this. They fire people "without cause" constantly, a lot of the time there's clear cause - the people making the decision about your livelihood often won't know you or your quality of work. With the amount of money received from the government you'd think they would care about optics and reputation - when the money stops flowing this place will be bankrupt. If you're an immigrant do your research when receiving a job offer, they will lowball you because they think they can. 

Was originally hired as a purchaser, than told I was a laborer, take it ot leave it. Put on afternoon's,  worked with some solid welders. Unfortunately, some of the other laborers were blowheads on shift. Which I'm not into during rigging, at all. I found another gig shortly after. If your being hired as a welder, take it, there are some old school guys who know their stuff. If being hired as labor, find something else, the danger, poor pay and ridiculous mgmt aren't worth it

Great company and lots of opportunity to grow.

Nothing as long as you have good attitude they will help you learn lot of things.

Great...They are helping each other.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
No stress day everyone is smiling

Great team of workers, unfortunately management staff is soo out of touch with projects that they go days with excessive down time leading to just wasted time. Location is a gold mine if they scheduled tasks related to work load. Hard to understand why they employ so many office staff when they do nothing

Poor management horrible place to work they push until you have nothing left in the tank then they lay you off cause your tired of the stuff as a welder your more like. Labourer cause they don’t do much anyways you expected to get things done on a timeline that’s impossible and without proper instruction of what they want avoid it you can not worth it

Poorly managed 
They don’t promote within if they do it’s usually people that income is partially paid by government 
Cheap out on gear to get work done
Majority of it is smoke and mirrors
Do not woke here if you’re looking for long term employment or advancement 


Horrible, toxic, management does not care about everyone. only the core employees are cared about, given the overtime and any respect. You will not be cared about. you will be dropped so quickly when they don't need you. NOT A LONG TERM EMPLOYER!!!!!

good work if you enjoy boat work or fabrication for offshore services. Great bunch of workers, good quality trades people. Overtime isn't shared amongst the workers. handful of people get all the overtime while everyone else has to suffer only 40 hour work weeks.

typical day at work consisted of getting you job in the morning and starting your task I usually worked on valves and a bit of welding so id start that get all set up with safety gear and when I was done do quick writeup  and hand it in management was good learned a lot of different things about ships lots of hours
