With so called “recovery rounds” (which is really a collection of non front line managers including managers who have never even worked in health care and have zero background) pressuring and at times forcing the staff caring for individuals to discontinue seclusion or restraints when it is against the nurses clinical judgement it has become increasingly unsafe. When staff are assaulted by patients they are told not to call the police and have to continue to care for the individual who has just hit them. Can you imagine any other workplace where that would be acceptable? When you are assaulted management could care less. There are no rules for patients anymore and this has fostered a culture of entitlement. There are no consequences for individuals who assault staff or other patients. Just because someone has a mental illness does not mean they are violent, however when someone who has a mental illness is violent it shouldn’t automatically be assumed that they were violent because of their illness. Ontario Shores needs to adopt Zero Tolerance when it comes to violence. Too many staff are being hurt physically and psychological ... and when we are unwell it is not fair to our patients.

The team I worked with was fabulous. However don't feel the organization is managed well at the Senior management level. Programs are not well thought out. They start programs and dismantle them without giving them a chance. Every year they have staff layoffs but they continue to create more senior management levels. These actions have had serious repercussions for patients. Every year we fear losing our jobs. There is a real lack of transparency from Senior Management. They spend millions of dollars for reviews by KPMG which result in major cuts in services. It is a very toxic environment to work in. This is a time where we should be investing in the mental health of our communities but all we see is cuts in services at Ontario shores while they pad the senior management level.

Unfortunately, this organization is only interested in the window dressing (how they appear to the outside) and do not care about providing quality care.

Had to leave this organization because the work environment was too toxic. You never knew if you were going to get your pink slip.

I would never recommend this place to anyone at this time.

When I started at Ontario Shores, I felt proud to join an organization that spoke of being recovery oriented and committed to healthy work environment for staff. I saw high turnover rates from the start and watched people get 'walked out' for mysterious reasons every few months. 
I had a new manager every year- none knew the nature of my profession and did not take interest in learning. So personal and professional growth is very difficult. Communication from management tended to be negative in focus-- very little positive feedback which fostered more negative environment among staff.
Workplace culture overall was quite negative. Workplace bullying/toxicity is definitely not addressed and disrespect between staff is commonplace.
I often felt conflicted by treatment approaches toward patients-- not patient focused or recovery focused most of the time. It was draining. Wanting to work to help patients and feeling they weren't being treated as a whole person-- the values seemed more like signs on the wall than something that they ensured was practiced every day.

Ontario Shores had some of the most influential amazing people i have ever met working their. As a high school student having a co-op placement for a term of 6 months i really had no idea what to expect when i started working for them. The people i got to work with set me up for success. I was a valued member of the team doing anything i could do to assist them in their work.

It was extremely rewarding working at Ontario Shores. I gained confidence communicating at the information desk, helping people with any troubles they were having. I always looked forward to coming to Ontario Shores to help people. 

The people i got to work with were extremely kind, supportive and interesting. If i had any questions they were always willing to answer and guide me to success and challenged me to be better.

I am so thankful for the experience and will always cherish the knowledge i have gained.

As a nurse it is a great place to work, obviously it has its risks, 
(it is a mental health facility) but it really is wonderful.

The management cares about numbers (To be far all places do.. it's healthcare). However, when compared to other facilities it is well run and stable. Patient loads are very fair. 

RPN's and RN's pretty much do the same job and you wont be able to tell who is who unless you ask. The culture is great, older nurses have their cliques which can be hard to break into, but you will eventually. Lovely team, nurses don't eat their young here!

Do not apply to work here, unless you want to develop high stress and anxiety. This place sucks the life right out of you. High turnover, due to unsupportive Senior Management Team. Passive aggressive behaviour. No kindness and compassion. They are the only hospital that never post the salary on job postings, because they are good at taking advantage of hard working staff, by assigning more tasks and responsibilities with no financial compensation. Do yourself a favour and don't waste your time with Ontario Shores. Apply elsewhere for your own mental health. 

Management is horrible, especially HR.  If you ask a question about salary or benefits you will never get an answer.

The first place I've every worked that you have to pay for parking. Before you are hired you must get a police check, various shots that you must pay for, over $200 and they don't reimburse you for anything. 

You have to use your personal phone for VPN access due to dual factor.. You have to pay part of your benefits and the benefits are the worse I've seen in over 35 years of employment.

Poor leadership and management. No future vision that is not about boasting about how big the centre will be or about making or bringing money,  with no attention to the quality of the research at the research and academics nor of the bullying that goes on, or to patient care and staff morale and absolutely no collaborative spirit amongst those in higher positions. Very ironic for a work place about treating mental illness. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Teamwork, communication with the superior and taking a responsible task, achieved the goal. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Every job has some form of stress, but overcoming that stress is one kind of stress as making sure it is done on time and properly gets it through.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Everyone is very cooperative and can do attitude. professional.

The staff in general are very nice and friendly, some are a bit clique-ish. The environment can be somewhat stressful, especially for those at the front-line of care. Management is very lacking in vision and having a clear plan for the organization - very reactionary instead of pro-active.
Good place to work in case of benefits and hob security but they are not really on the cutting edge and too laid back.
