Ontario Teachers Pension Plan

Was and still is a great place to learn and work with current technologies.  However, company lost the trust of its employees when it began outsourcing staff to India.

Management tend to tell staff what they want to hear and do something completely different.  That starts at the lowest levels of management all the way up to the CEO.

Many managers and executive managers have inherited their positions over time and simply aren't qualified or experienced enough to make proper decisions.  For some this is the only company they have ever worked for, so they have no true experience outside of the company to call on.

If you're starting out and want to learn and move on, this would be a good company to look into.  If you're looking for a company to invest long term in, this isn't the place.  Management can't be trusted and neither can the safety and security of your job.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Professional and through approach to everything and with that, over pedantic in some areas, however it is appreciated, understanding their self- management approach’s 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The overly pedantic approach to everything,!down to the last dollar, which means lots of mandatory overtime which is typically not compensated, at least for those who are not the “money makers”.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very professional. Tends to be very conservative, though they are trying to change that. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working from dusk till dawn and on weekends. They do try for periods of relaxation, bonding and appreciation.

OTPP- is a culture of very strong stable - people with careers in the 15-20 year range - few positions open up - role is comfortable stable and easy - not very challenging - employees are unionized management is not.  Projects are planned out and scheduled for a year in advance. Lots of extra people, not a lot of pressure slow casual and steady pace.  Difficult to change or influence culture because people have been there for so long - and are some what blinded.  There is no direct competition for the Member Service side so a fixed audience and stable funding makes for a much slower than expected environment.

Good overall environment, company values and camaraderie between colleagues. Lack of good managers, senior managers and leaders in general. Some are micro managers, some don't lead much. IT department's needs are very high owing to mature technology as compared to other companies in this domain - but instead of growing existing talent and creating roles for newer people to fill those roles, the organization seems to be in a shrinking mode. The excuse they've used so far, is that there are too many managers - well, either you compare the mangers to staff ratio to the rest of Tech industry standards, as well as pay and benefits, or you let go of your micromanagers or not so good managers to create room for blooming talent

Depending on what you are looking for, the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan can ever be a wonderful company to work for or simply a good company.

OTPP is an innovative company which puts extreme care in providing its clients with what they deserve. It makes every effort to provide the best customer service and transparency for its pensioners. 

While I found my role engaging and rewarding, I felt that it tended to become repetitive after a year into the position.

This is the kind of place where middle management controls every aspect of work to the point you have zero freedom and autonomy to express your skillset. The pay is the only thing that keeps people there. Which isn't saying much. I escalated my grievances several times to people and culture and various members of the executive team. None of them responded to my concerns. I finally got a 5 minute meeting with one executive. He continued working through our conversation, didn't address me or the issue directly. 

The work was interesting and challenging.  You have a chance to work with talented and knowledgeable staff for a forward-thinking organization trying to manage to a serious and challenging mandate. There very little room or tolerance for error. Most staff are good humoured and friendly people, but they are also worn down and afraid of senior management.

The commute to Toronto from Whitby

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It was a great culture to work in and everyone worked as a team 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Interacting with employers and other departments to get the job done

Was quite disappointed with my experience at this "great company". The pay and benefits are great, but the way you will be micromanaged is a bit crazy. 

Additionally, there are employees who have been there for a long time and clearly are not happy for whatever reason. When you have one like this mentoring you it is dreadful. The fact that management would put a person like this in this kind of position is concerning
