A typical day consisted of taking report from the night staff.  Attending emergency situations (relief) as soon as possible to let night staff go home.  If non-emergent, collect new orders for the day, initialize the computers for Pulmonary Function Testing or Rehab labs.  Attend to first round of treatment  and/or attend rounds in ICU, take report on patients, follow-up orders, provide patient care, troubleshoot as necessary, check up on previous shift's lab results, chest x-rays, and other reports, make adjustments on ventilators, perform intubations and extubations, line placements or arterial stabs as ordered, transport to other units, assist with high risk deliveries or C-sections, maintain stock of emergency equipment at bedside and for transport, ensure supply of drugs sufficient for each day, cover for staff that are ill or on breaks, check OR supplies and maintain anesthesia equipment, calibrate, adjust and repair equipment as needed or send out for repair. Attend staff meetings, education seminars, inservices and teach and review students' progress. Review and make changes to policy and procedure manuals and maintain records of courses taken for quality assurance programs.  Keep up with technology and provide inservice to other departments on new equipment and procedures.  

My time at this hospital was the best experience. Everyone was friendly and approachable and terrifically helpful. For most of the time under one particular CEO the morale was tops and it was like a big cohesive family, all working together.  The patient care on my floor was the best and every nurse and volunteer cared about the patient. Learning opportunities and in-services were excellent. The Director of Nursing and the CEO always had time for us. They listened and implemented some of our suggestions for the good of our hospital and morale. If something good happened in one area of the hospital we all felt it, when something bad or sad happened we all felt that; we were all so connected! To any nurse graduating I would seriously suggest that they work in a hospital for as long as they can, so they can get the experience and knowledge in every area, then choose what their specialty will be and where they want to have their career and further their studies in that specialty. When you love this job, there are no long hours.

I was fortunate enough to complete my recent, month long placement at Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital during which I was responsible for providing excellent customer care, ensuring safe, accurate and efficient collection of patient specimens, phlebotomy, ECG’s and ensuring safe preparation and transportation of the specimens to the laboratory. I had the opportunity to perform blood draws on over 10 patients every day (giving me a total of 250+) in a variety of settings, ie Trauma, Emergency, Day Surgery, Paeds, ICU etc. and various states of health, perform ECG’s, heel-pokes on infants, enter requisitions in MediTech and perform a number of other duties in the Laboratory, i.e. cleaning, stocking, disinfecting, planting, preparing and staining slides etc. In addition I learned to interact with patients and support staff, the routine of the laboratory, and participated in rounds. I became familiar with the various procedures regarding draws on renal patients, the identification protocol of patients and samples, blood bank samples, public health specimens, send-outs and different specimen requirements.

I found this hospital very difficult to work at. Management was in cliques, the only way to get promoted was who you know in management it doesn't matter what skills or degrees you have it's all in who you know. I also found a lot of older nurses bullying the younger ones and management would not deal with it. The work is fast paced, I was on float team so they would give me all the complicated patients whenever i was sent to a unit. I got sick of the bullying, gossiping, and stressful environment and left. That was the best decision I made to leave. It's not the place to work if you want to seek advancement, and if you like dealing with bullies.

Positive engaging small-town hospital void of the many beurocratic policies and procedures that so often entrench forward thinking in bigger centres. Have an idea? Bring it forward - affecting change is but a few and productive policy development strategies away - how engaging to the front line workers!

If you're looking for a place to dig your heels in and develop your ideas and be a part of a forward thinking (and moving) team - come aboard! You will not be disappointed. 
I almost forgot to mention, everyone smiles. Everyone. The CEO is present and engaged, as is everyone else. It's delightful!

Arriving at work on a day shift, it is 5:30 am, completing shift change with previous guard. Than heading out starting the day and not knowing what calls could come across the radio for you to respond to. The co-workers that rotate shifts are great, and can always rely on them for back-up. My management are great and understanding. I  would say the hardest part of my job is when certain situations arise that deal with the death of a person. And I have always enjoyed my job, where I feel totally satisfied when I can assist people when needed and they are happy with the outcome.

Very demanding job, no appreciation from the manager, too many supervisors that are always scolding and monitoring your every move, zero recognition  but everyone is always getting written up for the most absolutely absurd reasons like helping a co worker, I was told to focus on my own job instead of helping a co worker that was in distress and crying, for not completing a task that was added on the already huge list, there is no time, less workers, huge overturn and always short staffed but they keep adding things to do when there is already no time to complete the regular job description tasks making the workload overwhelming.

I am proud to say I work at OSMH but it has it's faults. There is a lot of cuts to frontline workers yet many middle management positions that seem redundant. They are very strict about absenteeism. We are constantly short people because the hospital doesn't have enough money to pay for overtime. Most of the staff is great but some people didn't make the right career choice and it shows. 
Overall a decent atmosphere, some things could be fixed but most people are super friendly and make work a lovely place to be.

I enjoy working at Soldiers. I have been able to develop many new skills. Right now isn’t great as there is such a shortage of nurses. Nurses are overworked with too many patients to look after. However, I work on a very supportive floor- management & all other credentialed staff- so everyone tries to help out! The only thing I would change was the training- there needs to be more for new nurses, especially checklists with exact expected duties. 

Facilities has only a few great skilled techs, but others are weak and just there for the money.
They put hospital at risk with their disrespect  towards the trades men at 50 plus years old that know what their doing , and favour befriend  the  techs, which are truly unfit.

I'm glad to be out of there.
2 tradesmen were up for grabs on the Manger position for facilities,,,and they gave the position to a security guard.
A huge lump of ,,,thats has no people or maintenance e skills.
