Oshawa Golf and Curling Club

The management and atmosphere at Oshawa Golf and Curling Club is absolutely terrible. Management never supported their staff, and not only that but if a staff member was injured, they would threaten that if they reported it they would get fired or at least reduce their hours/shifts.

For example, one day one of the cleaners put all the dirty napkins in the wash and when they finished, she put them in the dryer. Apparently, the dryer wasn't working, so my boss told her that she needed to wring out every single napkin by hand - there was over 100 to do. After doing this for a while, her hands started to swell and she could no longer do anymore so she brought it to my managers attention. My manager told her that she needed to finish or she would be sent home with no pay. She told me what happened, and going through HR at school, I told her that this was completely unacceptable and she needed to go to the doctor right away.

So she did, and the doctor wrote a note saying that she was to be on modified duties for two weeks. My manager told her that this was ridiculous, and she was to either do her regular job or she would not be able to work at all - also completely unacceptable in my mind. On top of that, myself and the cleaning lady were called into my managers office and were told that if we were to talk about this situation we would be fired, and that if we reported this situation to the Labour Board that we would be fired. I told my manager that I quit because I refused to work for a company that treated their employees like that.

Another example, is on a golf tournament day. I made it clear to my manager that I was doing night school, and I could not work past 5:00 p.m. so I came in at 6:00 a.m. so I could help set up. I left work at 5:00 p.m. and the next day I was called into her office to have her tell me that it was unacceptable for me to leave when I did. I told her that I had class and that I made it clear I could not work past 5:00 p.m. She told me that I am expected to miss class and that this was to never happen again - she never had any sympathy for anyone in school, and she always disciplined staff who would choose school over work.

This was, without a doubt, the worst experience I have ever had. I have never worked for a company or a manager that treated their staff the way she did. I would never recommend anyone working for Oshawa Golf and Curling Club, it is a VERY poorly run organization and the staff are treated with complete disrespect.

We had this one worker. Who was asked by their supervisor to look over a new cleaning procedure.

The worker pointed out a contradiction. and was terminated minutes later.

There is an argument that section 50 of OHSA was not followed here.
there where witnesses to this incident. They where ignored.
the situation was handled by management using legal technicalities such as;

If a supervisor tells an employee "Clean out your locker. You no longer work here" while escorting the employee outside of the building. They have not terminated the employee because they did not use the word "Fired".

Management also openly admitted (in an angry fit) that the way they handled the situation was by keeping whoever had a deeper personal relationship with management.

These days most work places treat employees as cattle.
OGCC wasn't like that until they brought in new management.

There are very few employees that  have been there for more than 8 years. and some of them are very nice people, I am glad I met them. But overall, this place wasnt worth the time to me.

They are unable to keep employees and their pay/tipout is below the average in the area.

With CERB, I was finally able to transition away from this place. And I am so happy I did

(Food and beverage department) A business that has gone from one of oshawa’s finest establishments to a toxic, mismanaged, pit of despair. If you care for your mental health, don’t get a job here. Once upon a time it was an amazing work environment filled with fun people, vast opportunities and kind, supportive leadership. It has since turned into an authoritarian dictatorship under the current, under-qualified management. Despite plenty of complaints and concerns raised, no action was ever taken, nor will it ever be taken. Gossip, drama, lies and managers who can’t be bothered to show up to work run rampant here and feed into the toxic and detrimental work environment that has found a home here for years now. Please take this warning, there are better options out there. 10% tips on minuscule bills are not worth jeopardizing your happiness to work amongst the bullying that goes on here. 

There were always new functions and events happening at the golf club. Staff provided professional and friendly costumer service to a variety of members and guests. I would typically check to see what function I was doing, then would prepare everything I needed to carry out the function. I would then carry out the function by myself or with other function servers. I learned how to interact with a variety of members and learned how to be more independent. Management is very friendly and fair and my co-workers were all friendly and hard-working. The hardest part of the job was trying running a function on my own that I was not familiar with. The most enjoyable part was working weddings and seeing all of the guests happy.

Just don’t work here it sucks. There is better jobs. They treat employees as if they are expandable like they can replace you the next day. Member’s here abuse there privileges and managements only concern is making sure that the members are happy and not the employees is there a reason for this? Yes there is and it’s because the members decide who keeps there jobs at the golf course. Just take my word for it don’t work here because it’s going under. Not even the members want to be here they just hold into what little power and status they have while being here 

As a former food runner st this establishment i personally found no joy in this job.  The management constantly talked down to you, you could not go to management about conflict in the workplace as the management would shrug it off and not take action when needed.  Because they take no action drama is a constant circle in this workplace as management will talk badly about staff to other employees.  the workers are decent for the most part.  I found working here draining and not worth my time.  a lot of staff constantly leave this establishment because of how we are treated by other workers.

Job security is pretty much guaranteed, most of the staff are friendly and helpful. Cleaning is easy, the only downfall is how busy it gets sometimes. Members are creepy sometimes and can get handsy with women. Management is pretty good, but doesn’t really do anything about conflicts. When it gets busy, it can be pretty hard to keep up. Other than that it’s a pretty great job.

This is the poorest run golf club I’ve ever seen!  The GM is rude, ignorant, selfish & so under-qualified!  Not why the club would keep him around when they’ve lost all their best and key staff.  If you’re looking to work for a dictator this is your spot!  If you’d like to be spoken to poorly then apply here.  Extremely overworked and underpaid is how I would describe my employment at this so called golf and curling club.  BEWARE!

A typical day at work involved setting up tables and utensils as well as serving the customers and ensuring everyone was satisfied.
I learned that customer satisfaction is an integral aspect of customer loyalty. Customers who enjoyed the service were much more likely to come back for events.

Lots of down time throughout the year. The Scheduling is favoured and the tips aren't very good. You split your tips with everyone working which doesn't seem to be worth how much harder you could end up working than others.
