Typical Day at Work: When you first come in, you usually check e-mails, social media and voicemail to see if any parents or new potential clients contacted you so that you can response to them as soon as possible. Schedule make up classes for parents who cancel classes according to terms of the contract. Prepare the trays for students and teachers before the tutoring shifts (often around 2 or 2:30 PM). Do assessment for any new potential clients/students. Discuss with teachers concerns parents may have with their child's progress. Orders books and supplies as needed. Talk with potential new clients about the Oxford Learning programs.

What you believe you learned: I learned how to conduct interviews, workshops, performance reviews with staff, customer service skills, Oxford Learning tutoring methodology and how management skills. 

Management: My personal management experience was not good. The employer pretty much saw all employees as expandable and usually did not listen to inputs. This is made worse by the fact that he does not know how to do even the most basic of things such as rescheduling a class on the MIS. I was the only key staff who consistently stayed during the COVID lockdown period and did three jobs (tutoring, administration and Ed-Coordinator) and yet, once everything was back to normal, he decided to cut my bonuses despite my loyalty and hard work over a period of three years. However, this only applies to the centre that I was working at (The Unionville location). 

Workplace culture: Other than management, workplace culture was really good especially if you graduated from the field related to education. Most of the teachers and staff brought new academic ideas to the centre each week. Most were interested in discussing different academic ideas. 

Hardest Part of the Job: Parents can be difficult to deal with at times. They can be very unreasonable. One should not take this job if one takes criticism personally or cannot handle a lot of negativity because some parents can be very difficult and yet, we have to be professional as it is our job to be. Management was poor for the centre that I worked at (cannot speak for the other centres). Do not listen to feedback nor care about your loyalty or hardwork. 

Most enjoyable part of the job: When students succeeds and when parents are happy with their children's progress. Co-workers were great and you get to learn a lot of new things.

I've been working here for almost 3 years, and it is one of the best jobs I've ever had. If you are passionate about helping students reach their full potential, you will love working at Oxford! There is a thorough training program (fully paid), which includes online training about different learning disabilities and how to best help students learn, as well as nearly a month of shadowing other teachers within the same subject. 
After that, you get your own students who you work with typically 2 hours a week. The younger ones work on the Oxford curriculum, which includes a wide variety of math and language skills, as well as essential study skills. High school students oftentimes come in for curriculum support, which means you are helping them edit essays, write lab reports, or understand their math homework!
There are two program coordinators (one for primary/junior and one for intermediate) who are extremely kind and are there to help you with any challenges you might be having with your students. The owner is also really kind and fun to work with. Oxford Learning is like a family, in that every staff member is there to support each other and care for one another. 
Shifts are typically 3 or 4 hours long, where each hour you have a different group of students (max. 3 per hour). Typically you work either Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays. Saturday morning shifts are also available on a volunteer basis. 
The best part of the job is seeing one of your students succeed in something they did not think it was possible to succeed in. The joy on their face when they get back a good test mark, or when they're recognized for improving a skill really makes your day.

Management is bad. 
Tutors are to work with only 3 young students per hour, but management shifts the student work hours around so that the teachers are only paid for 2 hours despite working with 8 students within a session. Also, working with 3 young students at once is not always feasible due to their lower attention span. 
All the work given to the students are worksheets anyone can easily find online. OXFORD LEARNING CENTRE DOES NOT HAVE ITS OWN WORKSHEET CURRICULUM UNLIKE OTHER TUTORING CENTRES. They are only relying on the name OXFORD to attract any business. If you want your child to learn anything, it is better to hire a private tutor instead of going here. Older students are just expected to learn on their own or have the tutor come up with a learning program on the spot. 
The tutor is responsible for the amount of work the student has to complete so if the student doesn't complete all of it on time, the tutor is blamed. There is no protocol for what to do if a student behaves badly so you are expected to shoulder all responsibilities if the student doesn't complete all their required work within an hour.
If management doesn't like you for any reason, then you don't get assigned any work so you basically get no income despite being on-call for any shift. If there are any last minute changes in shifts that you are expected to know about it and won't be compensated for your time. 
Heard a rumor that an ex-employee of Oxford Learning Centre became a registered s** offender in Ontario and now all workers are required to submit a background check or else they don't get any shifts.

-I would come in, set up, organize trays and programs, teach, arrange and conduct meetings with parents and staff
-I learned about all types of learners and levels of learning; I learned how to treat people with repect and patience, I learned how to develop procedures and systems to improve productivity and organization; I learned how to assess and record notes about students' education in order to improve their skills and teach them better
-For the majority of my experience at Oxford, the management team was excellent and helpful. When new owners took over, I had trouble adapting to new approaches to business and disrespectful attitudes and I felt my time was up a there
-My co-workers were phenominal people to work with and I developed life-long friendships with many
-The hardest part of my job was not having enough time to meet with parents and do all of the other duties I needed to. The summer months are the busiest time and the scheduling can be very tricky if you don't have a strict method. I was too nice and that made it hard to accomodate everyone
-The most enjoyable part of my job is the impact I got to have on childrens' learning and my own learning. There's nothing more gratifying than teaching someone something and witnessing them learning it. When they have breaktroughs or surprise you, it's even more exciting.

There are obviously some great things about working with kids and helping them succeed. That look in their eyes when they fully understand what they're learning is amazing!

But, the hours a low (after school tutoring), the pay is low (franchises with large overhead costs), and tough students to deal with. 

Because we had little to no training, we weren't really shown how to operate within oxford's methods and expectations. You're basically thrown into teaching and told to "figure it out."

Since they hire basically anyone, with or without a teaching degree, there is no teaching they provide on students who may or may not have learning disabilities.

Oxford likes to think that they can help students with any level of ability, but there are many limitations to their programming. The concept of focusing on the basics is great, in theory. In practice, this causes problems, because the parents often expect much faster progress than we can provide them. This then causes stress on the kids because their parents expect more from them.

All in, the job isn't terrible, but the franchises aren't on a tight enough leash for the execution to be as good as it can be. The concept is brilliant, but in actuality it falls short.

The job is quite taxing; It demands a lot of the instructor in that typically there is a 3:1(students to teacher) ratio.  Most kids struggle to keep focused and sometimes require your full attention.  I was always taught growing up that one works best when uninterrupted but the philosophy at Oxford leans more towards not holding the hand of the student all the time, they will have to become independent, and sooner rather than later. The teacher must learn to juggle the students. There is a specific system/philosophy that Oxford follows and it does not work for everyone. 
   Management was great, looking for ways to help teachers improve and encourage struggling students.  The most enjoyable part of the job is when a student finally "gets it", you feel like you've at least impacted one student with something you've learned.  Co-workers were also encouraging, offering tricks of the trade.  All in all, a great place to work.

This is a fantastic place to work! The environment is fun and engaging, and provides a rewarding experience teaching children. The management team at my location are supportive and organized, ensuring that everything is running smoothly. The centre itself is also clean and organized, providing a comfortable and safe environment for both teachers and students. The training I received was thorough, with observations, shadowing and pretty in-depth strategies on how to teach the students effectively. The other teachers are really nice and supportive, too. I really appreciated the flexible schedule, and received the hours I was promised. Sometimes schedules change during summer, but I've always been given a heads up! I find the pay to be very fair, too.

Really valuable experience for those looking to go into teaching. It can be as challenging as you make it. The materials are provided and simple to follow, and the job becomes very easy with experience, but by pushing myself to improve I learned a ton of really valuable classroom management skills. The management at the South Surrey location provides a really supportive, flexible work environment and they do their best to meet the needs of both you and the students. Very rewarding to form relationships with students and families over time. It's a great position for university students as the wage is good and it's exclusively part-time, but the times you can work are quite limited.

The managers at the centre were incredibly professional and polite, and toook great care to foster a welcoming work environment.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The only real stressful part is making sure that the children get as much out of the tutoring sessions as possible, though calling that 'stress' is a bit of a stretch.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Incredibly kind, incredibly understanding with any issue you may have, and the coworkers are all very polite as well.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You manage 5 or 6 kids in a typical work day, and spend some time recording their learning progress for a monthly student report.

The typical work day will require you to teach children who are struggling or trying to get ahead in school - this can be stressful for those with little patience or experience with children. The experience is great and offers you the opportunity to grow as a person and to help the next generation in their educational efforts. The hardest part, for me, was handling the difficult students (and there are many). Some advice would be to take things lightly, remain calm, not take anything personally, and realize that management is there to help if need be. The most gratifying part of the job is building relationships with students, having mutual trust, and watching them develop their skills knowing you helped them in a significant way.
