PAARC

Working at PAARC as a Peer Support Worker/Mentor with a background and education in Social Service Work, focused on mental health and addiction, along with lived experience has been a transformative experience. Each day presents an opportunity to connect with individuals navigating complex journeys of recovery. Through this role, I've honed invaluable skills in empathy, resilience, and communication, deepening my understanding of the human experience and the multifaceted nature of addiction and mental health challenges.

One aspect that stands out is the supportive management at PAARC. They prioritize the growth and well-being of their staff, actively seeking and valuing input to improve services and support systems. This collaborative approach not only enhances job satisfaction but also fosters a sense of ownership and investment in the organization's mission.

The workplace culture at PAARC is one of camaraderie and compassion. Team members come together, drawing from diverse backgrounds and expertise, to provide holistic support to our clients. There's a palpable sense of shared purpose, driving us to go above and beyond in our efforts to help those in need.

Yet, despite the rewarding nature of the work, it's not without its challenges. The most difficult aspect is bearing witness to the depth of struggles our clients face. It's heart-wrenching to see individuals grappling with addiction and mental health issues, often in the face of societal stigma and systemic barriers. However, it's precisely these moments that remind me of the importance of our work and fuel my determination to make a meaningful difference.

Amidst the challenges, the most gratifying part of the job is witnessing the resilience and progress of our clients. It's incredibly inspiring to see individuals reclaiming their lives, taking steps towards healing, and realizing their inherent worth and potential. These moments of triumph reaffirm the transformative power of support, compassion, and human connection.

Working at PAARC transcends mere employment; it's a profound calling. Guiding individuals along their recovery journey, instilling hope and support, fills me with immense pride and satisfaction. Witnessing firsthand the transformative impact of suggested strategies reaffirms my purpose. Each day presents opportunities for personal growth and meaningful contributions to the lives of those I serve. 

When clients embrace change and commit to harm reduction strategies or complete and permanent abstinence, the rewards are boundless, marking significant strides towards enduring transformation. This journey of empowerment not only enriches the lives of clients but also fosters my own continuous learning and growth as a peer mentor.

It's a privilege to walk alongside individuals on their journey to recovery, offering hope, support, and unwavering belief in their ability to thrive.

When people make improvements by engaging, prioritizing, and applying the strategies I continue to suggest, and you see firsthand how well their lives improve, it fills me as a peer mentor with so much pride and a significant feeling of contentment. Knowing that in those moments, and with those clients, I am continuing to make a difference in a way that could only improve the very lives of the clients I help on a daily basis, is deeply fulfilling.

I feel I am making a difference, and as I am doing so, I am continuing to learn and grow in so many ways. When you make a suggestion, such as a harm reduction strategy, and your client follows through with it, remaining focused on applying, the rewards are limitless. Both the peer mentor and the client make huge strides and permanent changes in his life, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment in our shared journey towards wellness.

PAARC is a not-for-profit organization funded by the Ministry of health. It's operations and way of doing things is stuck in the past and definately has not kept up with the times (staff are restricted from carrying naloxone??? Why???) It is unclear if this is due to the ministry expectations or blundersome managers. The expectations of staff during work hours is very high and no one is able to get their case notes done in a timely fashion. Salaries are extremely low. The programs rush clients through and aren't really able to assist people unless they are already well-established. Does not meet clients where they are at all. Instead just ignores real issues faced by the more severe cases and tries to push them out when time is up.

Collaboration is a highlight of PAARC and counsellors do work together well because most of them have a strong passion for the job. But they are also mostly very young & inexperienced. The benefit plan is good but not great. The time off is generous but you really need it because the ultra high pressure to hit targets is put on you everyday. You are still expected to hit targets if you take vacation which can really hamper your own mental health if you feel you need to take time off.

All in all I would suggest it as a place to work only as a steeping stone to another organization. Limited career advancement. Poor quality supervision/leadership and really rigid expectations/tight deadlines pressed on to passionate youth getting paid peanuts because they want to help their community.

Pros: 
-Good amount of vacation, sick days, and personal hours. 
-Most individuals at the agency are passionate about client care and are friendly which makes for a positive office environment
- New management seems to be working towards making positive advancements for the agency

Cons:
- Poor salary and oddly specific and restrictive ways in which the "health care spending account" can be used
- Questionable hiring methods  and/or desperation in hiring that results in some individuals being hired that are a liability to PAARC's values and put clients at risk
- No hybrid work available
- Limited opportunities to move up in the agency
- Limited resources to be able to complete job due to limited funding. Oddly, for an organization that has very little money but deals with the most concurrent disorders in the Peel Region, there is little that is done to try to solicit donations and increase public awareness of services. 
- No organized events for staff to be celebrated, with the exception of PAARC's 25th anniversary. Once a year there is a pot-luck held over the lunch hour, usually during the holiday season. 
- Low staffing leads to higher unmanageable caseloads that workers are just expected to deal with which results in higher burnout levels and more employee turnover. 
- Limited employee wellness programming and promotion


Pros;
-Strong sense of teamwork amongst staff
-Easy to get hired straight out of school
-Good compensation package (12 sick days, 20 days vacation to start, 2 paid personnel & 1 birthday) 
-100% benefits
-Work can be, but isn't always, rewarding
-Some managers have a vested interest in your career growth and well-being
-Somewhat flexible & autonomous in how you structure your own work days 

Cons;
-Autocratic decision making, illogical & arbitrary rules that contradict each other. Somehow you have to follow both
-Incredibly low salaries combined with high expectations
-Leadership is inexperienced and very disconnected from the front-lines
-Clients can and do harass you
-Very high vacancy & high turn over rate. Young employers use the agency as a way to get a foot in the door then leave. Low salaries deter experienced applicants.
-Constantly launching new programs without fixing the old ones.

PAARC staffs are all kind and caring people and agency promotes a positive atmosphere by building great relationship among staffs and managment.

There are many different programs at PAARC and one can be exposed to many of them and apply to them if opportunity arises.
Managers are very supportive and encouraging, they work great among themselves. They are busy though and hard to meet in person.
Managers

Harm Reduction approach is virtually non existent despite receiving funding. Management is utterly out of touch with staff. People on the payroll that don’t even have real clients. Management Provides zero training, direction or leadership. The power struggles and in fighting within managerial pool is soo rampant often resulting in using employees as tools for their own agendas

Case-loads are very high with limited direction from upper management. Management is incompetent and their credential don't align well with their roles. Pay is very very low considering the year and type of work however the benefits package and time off is generous. Work culture among staff members is great but filled with talk of quitting for other (better) opportunities. I won't be here much longer.

No opportunity for advancement
Poor management, and no Human Resources department to voice concerns over. 
Employee concerns are not heard 
Lack of flexibility in terms of working hours to meet client needs
Strict dress code 
Low pay, high caseload 
Appeasing funders is number one over employee and clients needs. 
Poor working conditions ( lack of confidential space) 

Working at PAARC has provided me the opportunity to engage in meaningful work. The management team, co-workers, culture are all great. The financial compensation is also fair and reasonable.

- good place to get foot in the door
- employee concerns are dismissed 
- employees are often taken advantage of because managers are too busy/overworked to complete tasks and therefore “delegate” to workers.
