PENN-CO CONSTRUCTION

I have seen this company come from a small local outfit to a massive machine.

This always comes with it's struggles, however my experience has shown me the commitment to training and internal advancement.

The biggest factor is you....
"Working hard" isn't enough. Asking questions, doing the dirty jobs, caring about your craft, these are the things that get you noticed in any company.

I started in this company as a bottom level laborer. Through hard work, time, millions of questions and taking some jobs that noone else wanted to do, I find myself now in the position I am in that I love!

I credit this to those aspects, coupled with a solid management team that, if you show that commitment, will reciprocate.

The core superintendent team is top notch, with a lot of promising younger supers in the wings working on their craft.

I look back and am very happy I made the choice to join this company.
I know my work is recognized and appreciated.

The office people treat you with respect until you get up north then they don't care about you and your well being......they tell you the camp is great and the food is really good Wich was a total lie...we had to cook for our selfs for the most part.....there is no communications between supervisor and the office......the whole time I worked there not once did we have a tool box meeting......when I was hired I was never oriented......there was know first aid kit........what attracted me to penn-co was the 10 and 4 turn around but when you get up north they expect you to stay longer then 10 days and half the operator's they hire don't know how to operate and I'm very surprised someone hasn't gotten seriously hurt........and some of the supervisor's that work there are always stressed out and yell at the workers and making them feel useless.....in my mind penn-co isn't a safe place to work and it's only a matter of time before someone gets killed on the jobsite I hate to say that but it's true

Got selected for an interview, went for an interview and it went well. Job involved a lot of travelling up north and time away on no set schedule. Was told they have limited resources at remote sites ( not even an air compressor). I sent them a FAIR wage expectation as this kind of work is on the fly and on par with wage of that job description. It was even below Canada wide median.

They were obviously offended that much that they didn't even contact me to notify me that wage was too high or any kind of negotiation. Absolutely spineless management.
These kind of companies are the ones to avoid. I'm glad it didn't work out because I got selected for a 9-5 job locally that pays nearly what I wanted!!   

Penn-co is one of the worst managed companies I've ever had the displeasure of working for.

Management is too busy giving themselves self congratulatory pats on the back to ever take notice of their workers, let alone reward staff appropriately.

As if that weren't enough, you will learn absolutely nothing of value if you find yourself in the unfortunate position of being employed by this outfit.

Pay - low. 
Morale - lower. 
Opportunity for advancement - nonexistent.

If this is your first job, your tenth job, or your last job - you'll be better served buying a squeegee and working for yourself than you will if you seek employment with a company such as Penn-co.

Being able to experience our northern communities and help provide better quality of life !!

Having a bad supervisor that didn't provide help when needed

Your work inviorment is different from job to job,not sure about the culture of the company!!

If working out of town days are extremely long and hard

Meeting new people flexibility of menu

Not getting food orders , working in a camp with residential equipment for large number of people . Non functional equipment

Rundown camp,dirty. No cleaners

Start at 4 in morning sometimes working till 8 or 9 at night

Nothing at all wasted three years of my life with them

Everything most of the supervisors are too young and the power goes to there head and they know nothing about a trade but yet try and tell them they are doing it wrong

Most of the employees are nice and get along with each

Guaranteed full time hours conducting Covid Testing to construction workers going to Northern communities.
I work with a great team of ladies and all work well together.

Only downside is, because it is contract/temporary work, no benefits and the uncertainty of when the testing facility will eventually close. You are made aware of this during the interview.

Don’t work here I have never seen such a sketchy company the safety guy broke a carpenters leg a crane collapsed and that information was pushed under the rug the favouritism is unreal safety doesn’t exist but if you do get hurt and make a WCB claim they’ll lay you off and if you’re native you get treated like you don’t know anything the Forman was never around and came up with the stupidest ideas

Good company, lots of projects and opportunities. Work done on site by superintendents requires more checking by the quality management team. due to minimal course of action and responsibility, superintendents are able to get away with poor work.
