PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION

This was the best government job I held, It gave me plenty of scope and challenge. I held several position of promotion at PSC, I was offered several promotions an learned a lot. But, the environment was such that the adoption of new technologies was slow. The commission was stuck in the past. Adoption of new ideas was difficult. I learned a lot about advanced budgeting, strategic planning, process monitoring, Performance Measurement, Large scale procurement, Financial Systems, Organization Structure, Communications, Software Development, and Management.

I was recommended for a Directorship on the eve of my resignation; but I left to follow my dream in business.

I had the opportunity to work twice as a casual with the Public Service Commission. I really enjoyed it because during my time there I worked with almost everyone in the office. I assisted with filling, data entry, photocopying, reception and I even worked with the Federal Student Work Experience Program. With FSWEP I was responsible work aiding in calls to students regarding job opportunities. I found that all my co-workers were very nice and extremely helpful when ever I needed assistance.

Management breathing down your throat, trying to find fault to blame on you. Bullying you until you leave. Micromanagement. One especially bad AD that caused and still causes grief to everyone on the team. At the end everyone that could, left. Constantly using the phrase "for your development you can do this" but when something goes wrong then you are to blame. 

For 27 years, I was able to work out of my home, doing work that I found interesting and rewarding. I was mostly outside of the management and workplace culture, which I didn't mind at all.

The Public Service is a wonderful place to work. I really enjoy my job but there is not a lot of room to advance. The must enjoyable part of my job would be the work load. I love being busy, and I enjoy new challenges.

Good clients and busy portfolio.  Steep learning curve, a lot of policy and procedures to familiarize yourself with.  Due to the government hiring freeze and budgets, opportunities for career growth were limited.

Workplace culture may change from one group to another depending on the manager, generally very process oriented, low turnover, lack of business acumen and sense of urgency, but otherwise friendly environment
