Pacific National Exhibition

Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) is a renowned company that utilizes light-shows and extravaganzas to cover up the mediocre work environment.

Throughout the brief period of time I work at the PNE, as a wheel dealer, my supervisor at most, once a day; expects his/her subordinates to be super-enthusiastic, and super energetic like an autistic kid on a sugar high. Despite the fact that his/her subordinates shows more enthusiasm in a minute than he/she does in an entire day.

The PNE will provide a colored shirt with it's logo as part of an uniform, as for the rest of the uniform, we were told to wear black pants to work. Taking into account that PNE took place during the summer times, I choose black shorts instead of trousers; upon arriving at work, I was told that I need trousers instead of shorts, or at the very least, longer pant-legs. As defined by the policy, while at work, all your loose items needs to be stored inside a storage space near your station, and you need to wear a black apron-like attire to store loose change while hosting games. Combined with the scrutiny they took with the pant leads to the conclusion that the PNE have a serious distrust with they temporary employee, so much so that they make their employee and themselves jump through hoops just to make sure that their employee knows that they're not trusted or welcomed here.

For the most part, work at the PNE involves hosting various games while standing for several hours at a time. Ensure that the fair attendee have a pleasurable experience. However, given that most fair games have a win/lose scenario, there will always be a conflict of interest; on one hand, attendee may not enjoy losing, on the other hand, one have to ensure that the rule of the game is followed properly; the most enjoyable, or rather the most laughable part of the job is that among the regular attendee who play and lose at the gambling game, there are several attendee who won big time and probably walk away with hundreds or thousands of dollar at a time. Which makes me question whether the management have any idea how to host gambling games properly.

Bottom line is this, it's temporary work, it's a job that pays, you go to work, you go home, and you're not going anywhere else, not to a higher position, or any form of advancement, period.

As a 15 year old, I found that there weren't many places in Vancouver that hired people under 16. However, the PNE starts hiring at 15, which makes for a great way for teenagers my age to get good work experience and earn some money while they're at it. 

My job at guest services was straight-forward but needed some multitasking during busy times. Good supervisors love questions and always try to help you do the best you can, while bad supervisors are more critical and like to blame you for things you cannot control. For the most part I had a critical supervisor who made my hours feel long and boring, while some of my coworkers seemed more happy with the supervisors in their shifts.

My job at the PNE gave me some good social skills that I can use for future jobs, and I felt safe under their rules and steps taken for security. However, many positions at the PNE don't have chairs, so you have to stand for a pretty long time. I would usually be dying to sit down by the time I had a break.

Overall, it was really neat to work at the facility I had gone to as a guest for so many years, and would recommend it for young people looking for a good place to start their career life.

I worked as Games Attendant at Playland for a good number of years. In a typical day at work, you open the game, and start selling right away. There's a specific bar you have to meet each day in order to meet expectations. The amount you make depends on the number of guests that enter the park. The more guests there are, the more you have to make. While working, you're basically competing against your coworkers to make more money. This job requires a lot of effort in speaking out and creating rapport with the guests. You're constantly yelling and calling out to get guests to play your game. The co workers are great and the entire atmosphere is high and lively. The job requires a lot of mental and physical energy. Mental being; you have to maintain a positive attitude throughout, which becomes exhausting if you're working everyday with 7-8 hour shifts. The physical endurance requires you to stand for long periods of time, which is hard the first couple of days. Overall, it's a great summer job. The one big negative aspect of the job is the management. The managers play favourites and give shifts to who they like. Same goes for when they decide to promote people.

This place deserves INFINITE praise!!! :D

Seasonal position but full of a very enriching experience!

A typical day:

I was on the site maintenance team and so I had to ensure that the site was clean and free of trash, debris and the concession tables were wiped and clean.

I was placed on this particular team as I exhibited an excellent guest services personality.  Uniforms were provided and the shirt colour for this team is red.  Any of these team members were people guests to the fair approached first to ask any questions as we were so easy to spot and we were all over the park keeping it clean.

I was always there ensuring guests had all their questions answered and if I could, I would take them right to their destination or as close to it as possible.  It was so much fun making them smile and having them feel like they were VIPs.  People were very grateful for all the help I gave them and the management team of the department I was in always gave me an outstanding report at the end of each season.

In my experience as a security guard, I've found that a good working environment can make all the difference, and my current position exemplifies this perfectly. From day one, I've been welcomed into a team where mutual respect and effective communication reign supreme. The camaraderie among colleagues is palpable, fostering a sense of belonging and support that enhances our collective performance. Thorough training and ongoing support ensure that we're equipped to handle any situation that comes our way, instilling confidence and competence in our abilities. Clear protocols and procedures streamline our operations, allowing us to work efficiently and effectively. Overall, this workplace embodies professionalism, collaboration, and a shared commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all. It's truly a pleasure to be a part of such a positive and fulfilling team.

It's an easy job that would take only 10 minutes of training to do. All you have to do is direct people to parking spots or to the exits. You also have to answer occasional questions or provide helps to other employees (like moving gates and such). They trained you to use a radio and working outdoor with customers. The supervisors were really funny and nice but you might get different people at different shifts. The lunchroom is chill and relaxing. They had microwave and fridges etc. Other employees are also nice but don't expect a lot of water cooler talks. The hardest part of the job would be dealing with difficult customers and standing for long hours alone. The nicest part is interacting with happy customers at the end of the day and LOTS of alone time. Super easy job if you can stand the occasional rush of cars and keeping track of the radio.

Indeed l had a lots of fund working there as guard watch I did injoy it my supper visior was a nice person,any people were so good to each others.it was a part-time at night from 10pm to 8am in morning like three days a week some four,my job I have to the garden inside the fance and make sure nobody break in on climp up the fance.I was making $14 an hour the job is it only at summer for four month my co-worker was from native we have lunch to gether in the lunch room and we chart too at coffee time,so far I did liked the job but after year later in summer I was very sick in summer then I when went back every thinges change my supper retired and they saide we full this year but we will called you that was short term job.What I enjoy much the company administeration invited all worker for great big party for the last month off the work,that all I can say and thank you very much and I hope to hear from you good news .

I liked working for the PNE at first, and the type of atmosphere it created. My co-workers and bosses were easy to work with, and made my job enjoyable. The job itself was very flexible, or, when I was working there it was, but from what I've heard the way it is organized has changed. But when I was working there, the shift lengths and breaks were reasonable. However, the amount of work that was requested in comparison to the actual pay was a little unbalanced, only during Fright Nights, a time where you get no benefits for night work OR holiday pay, because the work itself is temporary (not much you can do about that). There were rewards each night for exceptional work, but are "points" or something along those lines redeemed later.

You can try your best to make each interaction different, but at some point you just become numb to the whole thing. Your job is literally just to try to scare people as they walk by, and while it can be fun when you really get someone, that loses its novelty pretty fast. Also, if you're not previously trained to use your voice properly, you will hurt it doing this job. They supposedly train you before hand, but the training is so basic and short, you'll be just as prepared if you watch some 10 minute tutorial on YouTube--which is not sufficient enough to save your vocal cords. The supervisors also don't care about you at all. Unless your one of the favourites, there's a lot of favoritism and brown nosing in this job. There are some people who love doing this job, who go back to it every year, but I don't really understand what they get out of it. 

Fun job, but the site is old, tired and worn down, especially the main buildings. Not a lot of care from management, not very much effort put into the place - feels like a typical unionized workplace - lazy and complacent. Needs serious updates, and some spark back in those that make the place go around. 

Didn't really receive any proper orientation or any job-specific training - given keys and sent on my way. No SOP training, no ERP training. Worked alone most of the time, but was never checked on except for the first couple of shifts. Had to supply my own PPE.  

LOTS of rats and mice EVERYWHERE - more than once had mice get into my personal stuff - and droppings everywhere. No traps anywhere (or so it seems), so presume there is no mitigation plan in place. Kinda gross working conditions in some places and times.
