Parkwood Hospital

Volunteering at Parkwood was always an enjoyable experience for me. I mainly worked in the gift shop where I learned about the basics in customer service, and the importance of product knowledge.  My shifts there were very quiet and slow paced and I often found myself reading up about each merchandise in the store.   The manager in charge of volunteers was  outgoing and pleasant to be around with and very understanding and flexible.  I also visited the patients and war veterans and helped with transporting them to game night in the auditorium.  I especially loved interacting with them and hearing a bit about their background and life experiences which were so inspiring and remained with me since then.  Being  a young teenager at the time, I learned first hand what a little compassion, empathy and lending an ear can mean  to an elderly patient at Parkwood.  They were very appreciate of my time spent with them, and I was appreciative of their receptiveness to me.  . The hardest part in volunteering, for me personally, was trying to find a way to cope whenever a cherished patient departed in death. Remembering that they lived a fruitful and long life full of amazing stories and triumphs was what made me continue to volunteer for as long as I did... it was a wonderful experience in which I hope to do again soon.

A typical day at work for me would be arriving approx. 10 minutes prior to shift for a shift exchange report. After that I would be responsible for 8-10 patients with complex care needs. I would be responsible for delivery medications safely, assisting with any ADLs, completing dressing changes and communicating largely with the health care team and patient regarding health status. 

My coworkers would help each other in time of need such as when the day would get hectic and a lot with emotional support. 

The hardest part of my job was the hours, a lot of on call work, and very physically and emotionally demanding.
I did enjoy making the patients smile and seeing their progress and celebrating the achievement of their goals.

You'll never get hired on full time.   They want people that will jump at any shift no matter how it messes up your life. Your kids will never see you.  You had better have a live in nanny who can take your kid letts morning noon or night. Because you are going in all times of the day.  
The pay is ok but, you could make as much in a factory.

It's a great place to work. Great staff and work culture. Loved the job, it was very relaxed and a collaborative environment. I always felt very supported and appreciated by other staff members and my manager. Their scheduling system can be confusing sometimes but they are very flexible and overall it was a great place to work. 

I worked their for 17 yrs, - Laid off - worked side by side co-workers each day, worked well together with a staff of 18 per shift. Had great co-workers and got along with all.

Most satisfying and enjoyable part of the job is knowing you serve the people who served your country, the veterans... you will learn a lot from them, hearing their stories and how life was before. It's amazing to be able to share time with them.

Overall a great work environment and a good rate of pay. I worked in specialized treatment for acquired brain injuries and currently work in dual diagnosis treatment. This is a great work environment and has been a great experience.

I love working with the employees  at parkwood, theyre very understanding, and the children are incredible too. They are different and challenging every day.

I love my 3.5 years career in this setting. great team work. fast pace but lots of learning. Veteran Unit was slow but can be challenge if you don't have experience with dementia
