While working at parsec I was promised a mechanic position. And was stuck in a shunt truck. The company would not fix the trucks what-so ever. We had no heat or air flow from the heater, and we had to carry window scrapers, not for the exterior, but for the interior so we could see where we were driving. There were days it was -56 in regina at the parsec yard and we sat in our trucks for 8 hours of the . The cabs were so cold a thermos would freeze before the shift was done, I had frost bite on multiple occasions. I drove one of the trucks on many occasions that had no brakes. It would lose all air pressure in a matter of 30 seconds. When 70,000lb containers are being moved over your head and knowing you can’t move is a scary thought-this vehicle wasn’t fixed for over three weeks. The vehicles were death traps. I tried offering to help fix them but their mechanic was too arrogant to take the help, and the company too cheap to get them fixed. Another truck I was in had an electrical fire from the blower motor and when I panicked to turn around and get to a safe spot I was told to calm down and stop driving dangerous, all while my vehicle was filling with smoke in the cab. On another instance I injured my back and was bribed by the yard manager for a weeks wages to not report the incident. When I did he fought me on it, forced me to go to the doctors or hospitals he wanted me to go to and not a back specialist I still have recordings of the conversations of his demands. Less than a week after I got back from my injury I was fired I went through all of this for 16$/hrday

The people are great and the work isn’t too difficult once you learn the flow of the yard. The hours are long and you will be asked to do quite a bit of overtime but are not obligated to. The management is good at planning the trains but are terrible at managing people. As long as you are a stand up person and don’t let managers push you around by guilting you into overtime and having your schedule changed you will be ok. The yard crew is made up of great guys but they can be hard on the rookies sometimes. The pay is slightly below what you would expect for the work load but is decent enough depending what you are looking for out of this job. 

I worked for Parsec for 8.5 years. I loved being involved in all aspects of the company including supervising and health and saftey committees. The management team is awsome and I would go back and work there again in a heart beat. I miss it there. I enjoyed my job everyday being in the CP Rail yard and had a great sence of achievement getting the job done on a daily basis. The wages and benefits that come with the job are above and beyond most other employment opportunities out there. I encourage anyone that is currently looking for employment to apply.

I enjoyed it. I learned how to use excel for the first time. The management was able to be personable and get down to your level.
Hardest part was maybe there was an issue with everyone being too friendly. Like you didn't want to offend your "work-friends" if they did something wrong. Meeting all the interesting truckers that came in. I used to bring coffee for them since i was one of the first people they saw in the morning. I liked making them happy and joking around.

No matter what u do for the company they do not reward you for your efforts and its dissapointing because the job itself isnt bad, however they need to pay their employees more for the skills they are required to learn and the amount of rules they have to follow on a daily basis aswell as being hounded by supervisors and management almost all the time. Its like for 17/hr you’re better off working at mcdonalds for couple dollars less and avoid all the stress

Place is a nightmare not worth it make you work 12 hours a day feels like your working 24 hours.  Do not work here as your personal life is pretty much gone and for bad pay. Make you climb onto trains to unlock containers without proper training whether its slippery or not. Some of the lift operators and supervisors stee complete a holes. Couldn't even do a week here it is way too draining. Look elsewhere this place is complete garbage to work at.

Parsec is not a company you want to work for, the culture at the yard is toxic beyond all reason.

They say safety is their top priority, but safety is constantly tossed out the window whenever a deadline is involved. Not to mention the threat of firing whenever one of those safety rules that they want you to break is broken.

If you want to try and advance in the company, be prepared to fight for everything from forgotten raises to just not paying you at all.

My typical day at work consists of a daily meeting, fixing chassis, welding broken pieces and cracks of trailers. Learned plenty about safety and experienced challenges. Also learned different ways to complete a job. The management is wonderful and very understanding. The co-workers are fun to work with and are friendly people.

Management acts like they care then continue to do nothing to improve workplace. Always understaffed so everyone does overtime. Revolving door of employees. Have to threaten to quit to get acknowledgment and a raise for being hardworking.

you could go somewhere else to make less money doing harder work, the job isn't hard its being in the same place for 60 hours a week doing laps in a yard like a trained mouse. really long and boring days, management isn't the best when coming to knowing whats going on and kinda just force you to feel bad if you call in sick or miss work do to family issues.
