Passport Canada

I worked at Passport Canada as a student. Being part of the FSWEP program that promotes jobs for students, this institution has been very generous in offering flexible schedules. My tasks varied from mail opening to data entry of passport applications. Students are sent to any section where help is needed. This is beneficial to enrich resumes with various tasks and experience.  Change in tasks don't happen very often but they are appreciated when they do. Mail opening and data entry can become redundant to someone who needs a challenge at work. Most supervisors are kind and down to earth people. The workplace culture is friendly but a little difficult to move up the latter if you don't make yourself stand out a lot.

I really liked this position as it is my ideal and most experienced in this industry from previous jobs. The people were quite friendly although management was all over the place as well as the training part of the position. But as i suffer from anxiety issues with being around alot of people i terminated my own contract due to the illness. If i could go back i would in a heart beat. although the pay should be around 13 an hour as per job that has to be done and the hours put in.

Good training, duties are clear and performed regularly.

Overtime was given to permanent staff.   The staff work overtime 4 nights a week and some weekends.   The whole work crew is under a quota system.

Most of the 600 employees smoke.  This makes staying out during breaks difficult in warm weather. 

The hard part was the commute since the building is in an isolated area and not near the rapid transit way.

The job is in Gatineau and the highway is very scenic in the fall.

A typical day at Passport Canada was opening mail and inputting data into the system. Employees would be responsible for important documents that were sent with the application such as birth certificates, passports, health cards etc. I learned a lot working at Passport Canada, for example, what each color passport meant, the different stages that an application undergoes etc.

I enjoyed meeting new people. Happy to assist with passport renewal. I pulled several passport files. Investigation on all the information included to ensure I could commence with updating the passport information. 

I was on a 3 month contract with Excel HR...they did NOT pay me well. I got paid $11.50 an hour, while permanent employees got paid waaaay higher doing the same job. Not at all fair. The management Team at Passport Canada in Gatineau Quebec hardly interacted with us, never asked us how things are going and goofed off most of the time. In fact they changed supervisors twice while I was there for three months!

Although I only worked here one summer I made several friends. I did a daily inspection of various forms of paperwork for those applying for their passport. I would have loved to continue working their but the contract was short term and their were very few opening of full time as this department was quite popular with very few vacancies'

We work with a high volume of Passport applications, serving the Canadian community.

I am responsible to process the applications, from the moment their are received in the mail room until the moment they are mailed back to the customers.

I process passport fees, transfers to other passport regional centres and etc.

I very much enjoyed working at Passport Canada. I got good training, a lovely group of individuals to work with and a very understanding boss. Being a student this helped very much when I had scheduling conflicts. However, as a student on contract I did not qualify for benefits, but then again those types of positions do not get any. Overall I loved that job and had decent pay for a student.
