Pembina Pipeline Corporation

There is very little diversity, inclusiveness, or acceptance of anyone that’s considered ‘less than’ or ‘different’. Whether it’s because you look too different, don’t fit inside social norms, aren’t the bosses favourite, disabled in some way, or especially so if you’re in any way, shape, or form struggling with mental health issues and/or are neurodivergent, this place is one of the worst examples of ‘white-bred privilege’ that I have ever witnessed firsthand. The top executives from Houston, Texas were in Calgary in 2019 for one of their (flamboyant) quarterly town halls (all the free alcohol you could drink and candy ‘bars’ so you could pack up a doggy bag of treats for your kids) and were all really excited about what a diverse group they were up on the presentation stage… there were four or five white men up there, all in their 50’s, maybe an early 60, (President/CEO, CFO, VP’s) and their idea of diversity was the fact that they had such differing university degrees. CPA, MBA, LLB… Many of us were stunned, specifically the female employees because look how inclusive and diverse they are, they had just promoted their first female to a VP position (she was seated in the audience listening). It was 2019…almost 2020

Like so many other oil and gas companies or companies that are growing rapidly Pembina used to be a good place to work.  In fact it seems to get worse every year.  Many of the employees are great and there is a wealth of knowledge and experience throughout the company which would be amazing if employees were utilized at all.  

Pembina has a tremendously positive online and on paper image which is why you will be crushed to find out that it is only on the surface.  If any of the things the company communicates as its values were true it would be an amazing place to work, but unfortunately none of their actions support this.  

Many employees came to the company as part of an acquisitions and it shows as many are disgruntled.  There has been a lot of turn-over at all levels and while they seem to be trying, no progress towards making things better has been realized.  

While I have not read others reviews on here I am willing to bet there will be a lot of references to the 'old boys clubs', 'nepotism' and 'favoritism'.  Many managers spend a lot of time making sure information does not leave local levels, and strong arming employees.

The company is growing rapidly and that is where some of the difficulties come from.  I remain hopeful that Pembina starts practicing what they preach, as it would make a positive impact.

I work hard to perform my job to the best of my abilities (which I find very enjoyable) but instead of succeeding because of Pembina it tends to be more in spite of Pembina.  If you can find a position with good colleagues and one of the few performing management teams within Pembina you may be happy.  

I started at Pembina 4 years ago looking to start the next chapter of my life.  I was looking for an opportunity to truly affect change and I found it.  

I came into an organization that was without any true Supply Chain Engagement and was asked to share my experience to implement processes and best practices while still maintaining the "practical approach" style that had worked for Pembina for over 50 years.

Looking back I see so many changes and improvements that were a result of my leadership. I am so proud to know that a great deal of this progress was a result of my working with PM's and stakeholders to understand their world and work to show the areas that Supply Chain could truly add value.

As this organization enters it's next chapter of development and looking to focus on Lean it will be interesting to hear how the story ends.  I believe it will be a challenge for many members of the organization as there will be some reservations for some PM's, and SCM people of how Lean can fit into the execution of projects that cannot always allow for long term planning.

The most enjoyable part of the job was working alongside my colleagues and learning from them.

This is a bad company to work for.  Grew very quickly, internal systems did not so one does not have anywhere near the tools / systems / items needed to perform their job.  Management only cares about bonuses and is totally ineffective.  If you bring up items that are not working well or need fixing, that only gets you black listed.  Going back to how internal infrastructure was not updated with the company growth puts one in impossible situations far too often.  You need to be well connected to one of the various levels of management and/or be a professional brown-noser to survive and get anywhere in this company.  Honesty, integrity, ethics and hard work are punished - people opposite of this are rewarded and promoted.  If you are in a technical position, there is no job growth for you.  They will work you to death.  All of the yadda-yadda in their job postings about being inclusive and there being a work-life balance is totally false.  Best recommendation - look somewhere else for work if you care about your own health and having a life outside of work.  There isn't enough room here to list all of the negatives about working for this company.

Many meetings, emails, and tasks to react to during the day.  Great tools and advanced software to make your job easier.  Fun group of people to work with and good manager.  top level management is disconnected and don't see how hard people work. I felt really bad for my Manager, she was pretty stressed out and over her head at times.   She was pushed around a lot and no one stood up for her.  They promote their favs and not always the best person, but that's everywhere.  Not one woman or person of colour on the upper leadership team.   Hardest part of the job is the sheer volume of work, so much to do and it never seems to end.  Most enjoyable are the customers and team members, they are great to work with and always there to help.  Corp services are pretty good, i.e. HR, IT, and SCM.  

Pembina from the outside appears to be a well run company. Stock price (was) excelling, ambitious projects and vision, well-spoken CEO. Internally, it is a very different story. An alcohol fueled culture, employees rarely given the tools and resources to properly do our jobs. Even in good times, leadership was more concerned with spending the least amount of money to protect themselves and their bonuses. Middle management coasting along and nodding their heads and licking boots of Vice Presidents. It was insulting how management would not invest in their people, systems, processes, and procedures. We were left to fend for ourselves. Additionally, the company is ripe with cronyism, favoritism, and nepotism. HR plays along and supports it all. It's a broken company behind the scenes and the ship will eventually sink.

You're only a number. It doesn't matter how hard you work or the goals you achieve. It's all about politics and being a good butt kisser. You're expected to work above the required hours with zero compensation. They encourage you to speak up but when you do they ether don't listen or it's viewed negatively. Majority of people are scared to speak up in fear of being laid off. Leads and managers have no clue how to lead people or do their job. They are bullies. And many only care about making themselves look better. 
The only reason people stay is for the good pay and benefits. But let me tell you, so many people are unhappy and the culture is toxic. You have to constantly watch your back and be careful who you trust. 
Recommendation to management: listen to the people, do what you say and have some empathy 


It has become a sweat shop last few years with all the changes. Reduced a lot of middle management and work kept piling on. It is a very political environment and either you’re able to play that game to advance your career or you don’t. Rumours regarding employees with little effort to corroborate them is rampant across the company impacting people’s career advancement. Burnout is high in certain areas due to staff shortages or significant increase in workload. Pay and benefits are competitive to peers and people are generally good to work with. Just a lot of concern with management and how they treat their staff and decisions they make. Just felt like a number there and no appreciation for the work, long hours and effectively managing my team.

Assisting all aspects of the construction facility, from HSE to the inspectors, to the operations division.  
Working on a construction site building a gas facility was completely new to me. I had no idea of what the position entailed or what was expected, and with no one to give me direction, it was a learning curve from the beginning.
Many of the crew I've worked with since my arrival, and soon we'll all go our own way and on to different programs with different companies. 
This crew considered everyone equal, no one person was less or more important than the next, regardless of who they were or the position they had, everyone was important.
