PennWest Exploration

At Penn West I was hired on a summer geology student and was given an independent project to complete over a four month work term. There was excellent guidance from my peers and it was enjoyable to share suggestions and receive feedback from fellow students at the company. The staff made me feel very welcome and made sure to present numerous opportunities to get to know people from other areas of the company through volunteer opportunities and by giving the students an opportunity to present our projects in a general setting at the end of the work term.

Was trusted to perform your duties safely and efficiently, without a lot of pressure or someone looking over your shoulder. The hardest part of the job was not necessarily the work itself but the adverse weather conditions, a person contends with. As money got tighter and spending was in the forefront.....the ability to perform at your highest level becomes harder to do, (can be frustrating @ times, but is part of the business) and you have to adjust the way you do your job accordingly. Overall was a very good company to be employed by.

While at PennWest I learned many new things. I was introduced to much of the industry software as well as MS Visio.

Management were always very understanding and encouraged me to advance in my career by allowing me to take various courses at SAIT.

The hardest part of my job, was also the best part of my job and that is, learning new things. 

My co-workers were supportive and easy to get along with.

A decent place to work, could be great if they get the holes in the ship plugged up. Consistency and communication are the areas I'm thinking need the most work.

The company looked after their employees by providing a great work environment with career challenging tasks. The projects gave me an opportunity to expand my skill set to a higher level.

Selling assets and layoff's are the norm. PW provides a challenge at every turn, with equipment and pipelines failures just to keep it exciting. Keeps contractors on their toes.

Had great benefits and great people in management until they changed everything when the company was suffering. The manager who was laying people off was extremely unprofessional.

Pennwest imploded under it's own weight.

Management at the highest levels wasn't great

The staff were generally good.

Company in serious debt, leading to job instability and change of direction multiple times in the few years I was there.

I got treated well and enjoyed working at this company. They had good benefits. My manager was great and I enjoyed being part of a great team. Team work was really important.
