Petcetera

During my time working at Petcetera I would clean and feed the animals and perform general clean up before the store opens. I would then greet and help customers find what they need as well as check out customers by performing transactions such as cash, credit and debit. As well as deal with refunds, exchanges and complaints. Once the store closes I would perform general clean up and count the cashiers to make sure all of them balance.

I had learned a lot about the well-being of pets. My favorite part of working @ Petcetera was working with families to better understand and find out what products would suit their needs. The Management was great they were always around when co-workers had questions or if there was a customer need that I wasn't familiar with. I'd have to say that there wasn't a "hard" part of the day but more challenging. The challenging part of the day would be dealing with upset customers with returns or complaints. Though it was challenging I always love a good challenge since it betters my customer service. I absolutely loved helping and educating families on which pet or product would best suit what they were looking for. I absolutely loved working with retail since it expands my knowledge. I am looking for a new company that will utilize my expertise in customer service and my passion to learn more.

Typical Day:

If opening store:

Opened store doing office duties if manager not present.

Took care of small animals/fish - cleaning cages/tanks, feeding, attention

Took care of cats in adoption center - cleaning cages, feeding, giving attention

Took care of dogs in overnight dog care - feeding, walks, attention

Quickly went around store to ensure tidiness prior to opening.


During store hours:

Customer service, cash sales including debit/credit transactions, carryouts, cat adoptions, dog daycare admitting, assisting customers with getting new pets, returns and exchanges, stock receiving, store cleanliness, changing store displays.


If closing store:

Cashouts
Bank deposit
Other nightly office duties/paperwork
Feed and walk dogs staying overnight
Feed cats
Clean store
Ensure small animals/birds have enough food for the night


Non-daily duties:

Stock inventory
Putting up and taking down sale signs



Hardest part of the job were the long hours with no extra pay and pay for the position being very minimal.

Most enjoyable part of the job was interacting with the animals and giving excellent customer service.


Immediate manager was lovely.  Head office management was not.

I enjoy my job a lot, it's my first cashier gig and I was nervous at first. I've really been surprised at how much I like talking to customers that pass through, everyone I work with are awesome. The situation, outside of the goblins that own the store, is more or less ideal.

It has the potential to be a great place to work but unfortunately there are a great deal of problematic elements we have to tiptoe around. Most of which are rules that contradict themselves or are just plain so strict that you're walking a tightrope with no margin for error.

I don't imagine this company will be around much longer, it seems as though they waste a lot of money on stock they can barely move. It's all dollar store quality priced 13 x what it should be.

Animals get minimal attention, we would like to get them used to human interaction but owners do not want us "Wasting our time" doing that. Be aware of that when buying an animal from there, it's a pretty important element we're lacking almost entirely in.

All in all I enjoy my work and I do it with a genuine smile.

If you enjoy a healthy 1984 work environment where your every moves are monitored, then Petcetera is the place for you!

Enjoy a dark, dusty store where dollar-store quality merchandise is pawned off on customers as being a sick deal at half price when the original price was 200 times too high to begin with. 70% OFF papers litter the store as a desperate attempt to draw in gullible passers-by.

As a Cashier, you're not allowed to leave the till area but you cannot stop moving so good luck finding something to occupy your time for the hours where nobody comes in.

You don't get to spend any time with the animals. If someone asks, "Will it bite?" I have to say, "I don't know this animal, it hasn't been acclimated to human contact."

Google the company and include the term SPCA in your search. It was very enlightening to the company's current financial position.

It's been a REAL treat, you guys.

My day at work would start with unloading Skids of shipment in the back room, Checking to make sure that we got everything that was ordered. Go and put new stock of merchandise on the shelves with coworkers. Making sure everything is priced right and getting put in the right spot on the shelves. tidy isles.
 
Then whatever task needed to be done I would ask.
-cleaning live stock cages
-cashier, doing customer returns, helping customers.

Closing shifts I would  
-Close the tills
-Count out the tills
-Go and feed all the animals 
-Send reports of Sales that day to head office
-Balance out the tills to original float. 
-Lock up with coworkers.

While Petcetera is great for temporary employment, don't expect to be treated with much respect as you spend time there. Management tends to be incredibly hostile towards workers and sees them as easily disposable. As such, you won't gain any real benefits or job security. 

The shops tend to be incredibly disorganized and it's up to the workers to fix things up. Thankfully, during my employment there, I managed to fix most things, but ended up realizing the effort wasn't worth the reward. 

All in all, if you're looking for a job you can take for a short amount of time, Petcetera is for you.

A typical day at work was to clean the cages, feed all of the animals and then bath the dogs to get them ready for grooming.
I learned how to properly to stock shelves and clip dogs nails.
The management was not that great due to too many people trying to be in charge. 
The nature of the job was to care for animals.
The most difficult part of the job was stocking the shelves.
The most enjoyable part of the job was to care for the animals and bathing the dogs.

I loved the consistant customer interaction/assistance, loved caring for the animals, maintaining stock/marketing.
Management would not follow up with any in store issues. Poor quality if any service from head office level.

It was a terrible work environment with nobody knowing if they were going to have a job to come back to the next day. Stock was never managed properly, regardless of store management intervention. Animals were removed from the stores due to head office cutting contracts with shelters and not telling store managers or district managers.

It was years ago I worked there I did it to help the animals  find a safe place to live.  I love being  the person  that takes care other animals .  clean there Kennels to for a walk clean up after them or there’s nobody there a restock the shelves help other customers fun products it was amazing job and I wish I could do it again.
