On a typical day at work I would start with feeding and cleaning the animals and getting the morning cash completed. I would happily  help customers find what they were looking for while providing knowledge about other products they might be interested in as well. In the night, I would clean up the store and make sure all the animals have everything they need. During the day, there was usually stock to be put out or organized in the stock room. After, I would then close the cashes and lock the store. I have learned a significant amount more about animals, pet care, communicating with others and having responsibilities. If it weren't for the management, I would still be working there but they were not accepting of my college class hours. The hardest part of the job would be when a pet had it's last day on earth. It was hard having to be the one to deal with that but you got used to the reality of the circle of life. The most enjoyable part of the job was knowing you were truly helping not only humans, but animals too. I loved how generally positive pet owners would be.

Most of the time spent at work was dealing with people, be it customers, or Head Office. Other tasks involved placing orders for inventory (both dry and live), stocking and receiving that inventory, and the general care of the animals.

The work pace of the store varied greatly, as it was in a less than stellar location. But when I was busy, it was BUSY. Many times you would be helping multiple customers at once due to the low number of staff allotted to the store. 

Management never seamed to have a long term plan in mind, it seemed. This is probably the reason the company declared bankruptcy.

The only real hard parts of the job was dealing with foolish demands from Head Office, and computer errors. The only other challenging part of the job would be dealing with cash issues, such as shortages and debit errors.

However, all the bad and irritating issues associated with this retail store is over shadowed by the daily interactions with the animals, and some great customers. There's not many other jobs where you can walk around most of the day with a parrot on your shoulder.

A typical day at work consisted of arriving 10 minutes early to be adequately prepared to be on the floor by the time your shift began. Depending on the day of the week, the tasks available to do would vary; typically when you arrived you would take over the section which was due for a break. Covering a section included finishing the task at hand which typically consisted of assisting all customers, feeding and general care of livestock, maintaining an orderly work space, and restocking shelves. As a supervisor I also assured the store, and the staff were in always running efficiently, and that all individuals within the store, customers and staff included, were in high spirits and enjoying their time. By the evening I would typically cover cash; this consisted in managing the store as well as staff, processing all transactions (purchases & returns/refunds), closing the store, finishing all closing paperwork, and deposit cash deposits.

During my five years at Pets Unlimited my experiences were up and down. I have always been a hard worker but I feel that the company never recognized hard workers properly with pay raises and/or advancement in the company. I only had one raise (15 cents) over my five years whereas new employees were, on a few occasions, making as much as 1$ more per hour as I made minimum wage or very close to it for the entire time without complaint. My hours were also cut without warning on several occasions which shocked most of my coworkers because they said I have an excellent work ethic.

I was put in a position where I had to choose my job, or the safety of my clients pets. After a year and a half working with this company, my professional opinion didn't seem to matter when it came to the safety of the animals within the store, and the customers pets that came to my grooming room. It was because of this that I was forced to resign my position as groomer.

The typical day at work at the Pets unlimited is cleaning the animals cages and making sure they have food and water. The hardest part of the job was probably cleaning the mice cages. The most enjoyable part of this volunteer opportunity was bonding with the animals.

Had a fun time working there until the business went under. Working with animals can be a challenge, but rewarding. Always something new to learn so the job doesn't get boring.

The most enjoyable part of this job was working with animals and looking forward to seeing regular customers who look forward to talking to me.
