This place is a complete joke. They will promise you anything during your interview, then when you start working you realize its all lies. The owner is a tyrant that is stuck in 1940, he thinks everything can be done with no tools, broken equipment and no drinking water. You will have more down time sitting on the side of the road than actually working, only because the trucks are all falling apart. And if you refuse to drive the trucks because they all have atleast 4 major defects, they tell you to go home. The only person who is actually busy everyday is the mechanic, but he isnt even given the proper equipment to fix the junk. 

Nobody cares about any kind of training, you can just operate any piece of junk that you want, even if you have no experience. There is no organization, the people in charge have no idea what they are doing. We refer to the managers by a number because there is no point learning their name, they are all fired or realize what a clown show the place is within the first month. If you don't follow the owners orders he will tell you that you aren't a real man. 

The only positives about working here is the labourers you work with everyday are good guys and the union pay and benefits. You will have to get really fimiliar with the union also because filing a grievance is a common occurance. But the union will always take your side.

The most disorganized place I have ever worked. No one knows what is going on, and no one knows who is in charge. The equipment is junk, and the mechanic is useless, if the company will even allow him the money to fix anything. Management is the worst! There are at least 4 to 5 people "in charge" yet none of them have a clue what is going on, or even what we do during the day. Most staff are there for the pay cheque, but the ones that really do care and are helpful are run right out the door.
Training is another issue with us men, NONE what so ever. Here is a job folder, go do it. When people mess up they are fired, even though they were never trained properly. 
The only thing is the union wage, which can be earned almost everywhere in the industry. Don't waste your time here like I did, twice. Go work where you are appreciated, and trained, and that is NOT pickards.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Worked there for 16 years.  Started at the bottom and worked my way up.  Great company to work for.  People always think the grass is greener elsewhere.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Timelines and workload.  Pre-planning makes things go smoothly. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Great coworkers and managers.!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Start at the shop, get your plans, load your material and hit the road.

Good place to work if your fresh out of highschool and want to learn how to work hard for no money not a job for somone with a family, Sault Ste Marie branch is not unionized make much less. $ then all other locations absolutely no organization never know what your doing till you show up in the morning ,never know when you'll be off or home, promised raises every 3 months goodluck getting one in a year , all equipment is out dated and abused which some how always falls back in to the worker 
All in all I wouldn't waste your time 


its not without its share of issues, but its overall a decent place to work. 

hours are good, pay is good (union wages) and anyone who works hard with a positive attitude can go 'places'.

All negative reviews are most likely from the few that want to come to work, do as little as possible and complain about everything in life like it owes them something. 

overall management is good but each office will have a few 'bad apples'.

Not a very good place to work. Long hours some days with no over time,  some days lack of work get sent home early without pay. On call all the time wether you like it or not. Not very professional staff. Management would be quick to criticize and talk about you behind your back or in front of other employees  . Most equipment was rough shape with minamul to no mantainance being done. No union protection. Have to take your holidays at Christmas and likely don't return till spring. Don't work here don't listen to their lies.

Management doesn't understand machinery. Pushes everything till it breaks and doesn't provide maintenance time or instruction to the labourer's .  Geriatric management doesn't understand new machinery.  Their knowledge is based somewhere in the 60's.  Most head people at this company are over 70 and if you aren't they won't listen to you.

In the the Ftth crew all my coworkers get along with each other pretty well, it's also easy to see who is a bad apple whether it is work ethic or their personality. The bosses are pretty fair on everyone and has improved their organization skills greatly from 2021, the bosses usually get rid of the bad apples in a few weeks.

This review does not account for the lively crew and work environment as I have no experience working with them.

I very much enjoyed working at Pickard Const. Once again the people really make it enjoyable. I enjoyed being able to drive company vehicles to work locations because it gave me a sense on responsibility. It was good that you were not usually in the same area for more than 3 days at a time. I only left because I moved back to my home town. Information was conveyed well, I never really felt like I was left in the dark about anything. I am currently trying to get in with the branch in my town.

Work hard , Think , Do A Good Job That you can be proud of , Grow Your Self & The Company.  Long Hours , I all ways figured it Cost the Same , To fill your Lunch Box & Drive To Work For 10 To 12 Hours As It Does For 8 Hours .Started Out Farm Boy , Most Enjoyable Part Of The Job,  Got My AZ , Learned To Drive Every Truck & Machine . Pulled Wrenches , Learned A Lot . There Was a Lot of Good Guys .  Management For The Most Part Very Good , Nothing is Going To Be Perfect .
