Pilot Flying J

As a General manager you are expected to pretty much be every person in the building. If you are at a struggling store or location be prepared to receive no help from a corporate stand point. The most that I ever saw is they put an ad out, which in directness lack correct details of the positions. In multiple occasions as a GM i was expected to cover any time a call out occurred, no matter the area. You are expected to know each and every position in order to fill in for others as required. The way the company is set up for staffing is to overwork all employees to death. There is no in between on staffing hours. For example with the location I worked at, even though we were over on sales and goal targets no extra labor was ever given to help compensate for the extra work in the store. Employees constantly burn out and in turn quit because the pay does not match the job requirements, not even close. 

The corporate side will throw out terms like, "you matter", but that is all that is there. GMs are asked to do performance reviews for each team member at either 6 months or 1 year to do raises. However, after corporate reviews the raises are literal pennies, e.g. $0.10. 

Overall it is not a good place to work. The clients, mainly truckers, treat employees horribly and if you ask them to leave it turns into a corporate complaint which you are asked to call the customer and pretty much apologize for them cussing out your employees, treating them like dirt, etc. In directness if you are a decent person that believes that employees should be treated with respect and that mistreatment is not OK, this is not the place for you. However, if you are a manager that enjoys just doing as told and being a puppet for a paycheck it may be the right place for you. 

Go back to school and find a career that has advancements and a great atmosphere because you are not going to go far ahead being employed at a Flying JOKE. I won't mention the tons of reasons not to work there and why I didn't enjoy it since the list would go on and on and on , but you should just avoid it at all cost and find something else more descent and reasonable for $14/hourly. I don't think it's worth it, Period. You just might as well go work at gas stations like Canadian Tire, C-store, Couche tard (mac) or Circle k, or even plazas like the Onroute(HMS) for that wage... At least those places don't take a toll on you as much and won't overload you with mountain of tasks. They're not easy places to work at, but they are billions&Trillions light years better.

To oversee the high volume, multi-faceted location in High Level, AB. Responsibilities include hiring, training, and developing excellent team members in a fast paced, 24-hour environment. Proving great customer service, managing team members, Payroll, Inventory management, and overseeing general day-to-day operations. Also to receive and ship orders and adjust inventory to sales, Payroll, Planning, depositing daily deposits, inventory management. Running the day to day operations of a fast paced, bar environment. Responsibilities include Ordering, Shipping and receiving goods, customer service, office duties, Inventory Management, Manage over 60 employees at this position, dealing with union issues, workers compensation issues and form and procedures, and a wide variety of issues having to be dealt with on a day to day basis.

I would not recommend this company, not worth your time. Some of the workers are easy to get along with, then some are just useless and rude. 
The management doesn't do anything but hide in the office to avoid actually helping. The manager also likes to fire people just because, or makes people walk out for being treated unfairly.
All 3 shifts there are always blaming each other for things not being done instead of just either doing it or letting the next shift know what happened.
This place makes you miserable it's ridiculous, multiple call ins and being short staffed. No one gives a s*** there, it's like a zoo.
The only good thing is the customers, the truck drivers are super pleasant and make the day go quicker!

The work environment between coworkers was fraught with gossip and back biting, management did not support stafff and used veiled threats of termination upon every interaction when discussing work issues.
Flying J consistently works new Canadians many more hours that 44 wk and doesn’t pay overtime or very little since they do not consider that working 9-10 days in a row as breaking labour rules because they pay weekly and therefore the 10 days is in two pay periods.
They do not give sick days and vacation is needed to take time off if I’ll and you want to get paid.
The work environment is generally negative and I do not recommend this organization to anyone.

My time here has been terrible. For initial training the manager would berate new employees in front of customers and shout over other staff members to be the "center of attention". In my time here we went from having close to 30 staff to down to 10 due to poor management. The schedule is supposed to be posted 1 week out you're lucky if you get the schedule the day before your shift. There is constant confusion about who is working when. Manager changes the schedule with no notice and wonders why her "scheduled staff" don't come in. People are now working 6 and 7 days a week up to 16 hours a day because of the poor scheduling. Overall not a place you want to work if you like being treated with respect and having a work life balance.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I love Pilot flying J,  over a year and a half at the one in Nisku, and I hate even missing time when I'm sick. We have awesome customers,  but the majority of our stuff is a hoot. We have a lot of laughs while doing our job, and fulfilling our duties.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Nothing. Other than when I'm sick, I miss everything about flying J. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Work environment is, I'm basically the cleaning lady, they call me Mrs. Clean. Culture...mixed.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I accomplish a lot, I love to clean so that's what I do a lot of on my shift,  mix it with great staff and customers, you cannot go wrong.

My time at Flying J In Tilbury was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. To start, the managment are extremely rude and helpless. Empty promises and constant let downs from managers. Rarely did the store manager spend time on the floor, and when she did it was spent walking around like she had a clue how to operate the tils, computer or lottery. 

The conversation and interactions with professional drivers is what made the job fun and entertaining at times.

This specific location was full of negativity, poor management, lies, broken promises and unfair treatment of staff. I would absolutley not recommend this store to anyone in terms of employment.

I didn't think my experience working there was a positive thing. To much drama in proper management and lack of management. Staff were rude to others and found it very unprofessional. Worked there for a while and saw more than a few staff come and go with a lack of proper communication and interviewing skills most were hired on the spot no back ground checks. I found that to much negative people there was no proper customer service skills being offered which is sad. This is just my personal opinion from working for Pilot Flying J for over 2 years.

You really work hard for your money here and need eight arms to perform your duties. I loved the people that work here but training was not the best for all you do here. So many different things to learn and when you only work one day then 3 off it was hard to remember what the heck you were doing somedays. The shifts were also long even with the 10 min breaks and 1/2 hr lunch. Given more time on training for the staff would be helpful. Must be really quick to learn to work here.
