Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc.

The work day starts at 6 am and can last till 5 pm. This can cause some personal issues; especially when the weather becomes very hot, which is most of the season. I worked specifically for a corn detassling crew. 

The management of that crew was unsatisfactory. There were many times, especially of late, where they made unfulfilled promises and put my life at risk. Once, we were in a thunderstorm which kept leaving and returning. In fear of their lives, many crew members wanted to go home. These members were fired because they didnt want to be shocked by lightning. In this, I found that the management seemed to care more about the job being completed than the safety of its' workers.

The pay was minimum wage and the only way to advance in pay was to join clean up crew; which gave a couple more dollars an hour. The job was very demanding either way. If you didn't put your full effort and energy in doing a quick and efficent job, you were most likely to lose your job within a week. I found myself to be extremely exhausted at the end of a work day and several crew members agreed with me.

My co-workers were friendly however. We were able to relate to each other and understood the pressure on each of us. This did give us more encouragement to help each other out and work to the best of our ability to get the job done.

From all of this I learned how to push myself beyond my own limits, working even when exhausted. I also learned to work with others, aiding them in their time of need so they would later do the same for me.



Front line - answered calls and greeted walk-ins.  Checked my email for assignments and communications from various customers.  On occasion, I arranged out of town accommodations for staff, and/or travel arrangements.  I was responsible for purchasing items for the office as needed or requested.  I learned to do in-house payroll and paid particular attention to time sheets for accuracy.  I was a member of the Social Committee, which organized employee events and special occasions, ie Birthdays, Christmas party, etc. Being the Safety Technician allowed me to learn more about job and employee safety.  The senior management team was great to work with.  My opinions and ideas were always considered.  I got along well with all my fellow employees.  I was given the liberty to edit and design the company's monthly newsletter, which I enjoyed.  Inter-company newsletters were a great way to know what was going on in our other Canadian locations.

While working for DuPont Pioneer as a general labourer, I will admit it was tough at some points with the hot summer weather we experienced, although it was great on a cool summers day.  Everyone at this workplace was very helpful and encouraging.  I enjoyed working in partners and groups to complete tasks, putting our ideas together to ensure the most effective and efficient plan for the particular job.  The hardest part of this job was when working individually, I had to really think about what was the best route to go down in order for this job to be a success on my end.  Making mistakes and learning from them was the way to learn at this job, along with increasing your pace while still ensuring the job looked professionally completed.  A bonus was how caring my manager was, and the great snacks she would always provide us!

I have learned a lot about seed production while working at Pioneer. There are many knowledgeable employees who are willing to answer questions regarding the industry.  Many co-workers are hard working and driven.  
This company has high standards for safety and does a good job of instilling safe working practices among its employees.
The hardest part of the job was shift work and the fact that there are many temporary employees who get laid off every year.  The best part of the job was that the work was steady and I was able to move around a lot.  A constant change from sitting, standing and lots of walking helped to make the each shift more physically and mentally comfortable.

i must amit that the hours in the winter time seams long with snow storms going on and you making sure that the highways and roads are cleared but it may seam lonely at time but everyone is there when you need them for help  I would not have past the chance to try this job. it give me an understanding of when every other snow blow worker has to put up with .
you would check out your truck to make sure every last thing on it works ..you have a log book to keep track your safety checks gas used sand ..and salt you learn how to use the tracker loader to put your sand/salt into your truck .   you mind and eyes are always going and looking for things on the road of in the ditch

I do like the corn field, you get 4-8 hours a day. But you never know what to expect. Sometimes the mornings are wet from the dew and cooler, some times they are dry and hot. There are plenty of insects, mud and dirt. We work rain or shine. The hardest part of the job is always hot and humid, We are expected to wear long sleeve shirts and pants. In the morning you are usually wet from the dew. The most enjoyable part is making friends, getting money and sometimes having fun while doing your hard job. 
I learned I can do anything I can put my mind to, I learned not to quit or give up. 

-People are great and it is a fun work environment 
-Very high turnover rate 
-Start as a Temp and maybe after 2-3 years receive a full-time status (very unlikely at the current stage of the company)
-Temps have the exact same responsibilities, sometimes even more, as full-time staff
-People that have been here for more than 5 years lose any sort of passion or team involvement

Good work place, friendly staff and a genuine "try" at making it a good workplace. However, the company spends so much time and money telling you why you SHOULD be happy there instead of saying it with a paycheque. Very, very disappointing yearly raise which did not even cover cost of living increases made it impossible to stay on with this company no matter the circumstances. Still, a enjoyable time spent with good people stuck in underappreciated roles.

I personally enjoyed this work placement. A typical day at work was surrounded with friendly co workers, all willing to complete the right task in a timely manner and efficiently. The management treated the employees fairly and appropriately, considering the work environment. I learned the important skills needed for a workplace such as working well as a team, working hard and efficiently and being punctual. The hardest part of the job was long hours but the earnings were well worth it.

I worked as a corn detassiler for 7 years and for the first 4 or 5 years I was technically employed by pioneer but they had people come out every day to make sure that everyone on the crew was being safe and that the contractors were treating us fairly, we had to were these pretty nice orange hats with a bee keeper mesh. During one of the bad years they even paid everyone an extra dollar an hour in the really bad fields.
