Pita Pit

A typical day as a supervisor at Pita Pit consisted of either opening or closing the store (or sometimes both in the same shift because they were constantly understaffed), managing and/or training the employees (the training was inconsistent and there were several issues with training the person "correctly"), and doing last minute favours for the managers.  You often would get calls from the managers on your shift asking to make 150 smoothies 1 hour before you close.  The other supervisors thought they were better workers than everyone else, simply because they have been there longer than others.  I found the work load to be extremely stressful and when I spoke to the managers about this, they only gave me more hours the next week.  They don't give the schedule out until two or three days before the scheduled day so it makes it difficult to plan what you're going to do.  I found that management had not cared at all about what anyone else felt or thought as they only cared about making a profit.  The workplace culture was fast-paced, but since they were constantly understaff, you were left rushing like crazy all on your own.  They treat their student employees like rubbish and they assume that because they're students, they don't understand that they're being taken advantage of.  There have been several cases where they've made young high school students stay far past their scheduled leave time to do something that the openers were too lazy to do the next morning.  I could go on and on about the terrible experience I've had with this company, but I'd like to make it clear that I do not quit easily and I was committed to this company for a long time before reaching my breaking point.  One thing I learned about this work experience was that you have to be creative and know your limits.  I learned to not be too nice and understand that you are your main priority.  The most enjoyable part of my job was probably working with the employees who had common sense (which was quite rare) and were enjoyable to work with as it relieved some of the stress.  As unfortunate as it is to say, I would 100% not recommend this job to anybody.

I liked every worker that was hired. Extremely friendly and socialable. The working conditions are awful. During the summer seasons air conditioners are we not provided, only electrics fan, one of workers fainted of heat exhaustion. And during the cold season, heat is not provided leaving the store very chilly. The workers are extremely friendly and have a lively aura in general. However the poor working conditions do cause the workers to become exhausted. 
The store receives a lot of complaints about customer service but the workers are university students so no wonder they may come off as rude. This all greatly affects an overall happy experience.
There are only 2 people running the store at once. However if one needs a lunch break, they can't sit down when it gets busy. In the vacation season there will still be two people working on the floor while we get up to about 60 - 80 customers.
During the seasons when store is not busy only one person will be working meaning they won't be able to sit down for a break when working a regular 5 he shift.
Scheduling sometimes are set to work against availability.
Underpaid and sometimes dismissed.
Pay is cut short after working for a year or two in the store workers don't get their deserved pay raise for no valid reason whatsoever.
Management is unorganized. At the back of the store, washing dishes involves scrubbing food off the containers dunking it in bleach and that's good enough. The mop heads are not changed as regularly as they should be, mops are not hung up but instead left in the bucket emptied mop bucket. Leaving the mop with fruit flies. Complaints regarding temperature working conditions were not taken seriously so we did have someone faint. Pita pit UBC had so many complaints from employees that had to be repeated to the point they gave up. Or were too scared to ask so there was a good amount of miscommunication.

During a typical day at work it was important that the staff work together to complete the daily duties as well as provide customers with exceptional service. Between making pitas, working cash, washing dishes, prepping meats and veggies, and keeping the restaurant spotless, it was a hectic, but enjoyable day.
When working there, I learned how to better manage time in order to complete all the jobs necessary while also performing them to the best of my abilities. This skill is now put forth in everything I do; whether that be school work, vacations, or even week-day/end plans. In addition, I learned better social skills and became more outgoing, better at communicating, and more cooperative.
The management of the store was good and the workplace culture was exceptional. All the employees worked well together and became very close in such a short period of time. It helped when problems arose because arguments were always constructive and never filled with blame.
The hardest part of the job was when it would be busy in the store during the entire day and became difficult to get all the jobs done before closing. Although this was never too big of an issue, it was tough sometimes because no matter how well you tried to manage your time it was always hectic.
The most enjoyable part of the job was going to work knowing I would be spending my day with some of the most hardworking and fun people. It made the job so much easier knowing that the day would be filled with laughs and smiles from both the customers and each other. The job was made enjoyable and fun for everyone even during the most stressful times.

Overall decent beginner workplace for any high school student or young adult. The job has taught me how to work collaboratively with my co-workers in a fast-paced environment whilst balancing multiple tasks at once like managing the cash register, maintaining the grill and cold table, preparing vegetables and servings in the back and making pitas, salads and smoothies. The job has also taught me how to prioritize my time with certain tasks, specifically when closing; lots of tasks are required to be completed within little time so you must be constantly working fast-paced, efficiently, and collaboratively with your co-worker. However you don't get much training from the management, you are kind of thrown in there and expected to know a lot of basics. It took me around six months to know everything about the job because I had to learn most things slowly and on my own through many mistakes. The management is often unavailable to ask immediate questions to as well, which was a large part of my slow growth. The environment overall is not bad, if you befriend your co-workers it can be fun but if not it can be really boring and almost aggravating often with drama. The hardest part of the job is working with an insufficient co-worker, and because it is such a collaborative job, you are left running around lonesome to pick up all the slack. You are also not given the opportunity to be very flexible with your schedule in regards to time off due to the lack of staff, and due to the favoritism/ ability of staff, you may not be given the timing nor extensiveness of shifts best desired.

the pita pit is a very like able place to work. on a daily bases they serve and deliver excellent costumer service and food to their guests. unlike most fast food places, pita pit is unique and tries to be a healthy choice for many of the students and families thta live near the west dale area where i currently work. daily tasks include keeping the store clean and kept. that include constantly sweeping and wiping done table tops and counters. employees where also taught how to interact with costumers and make them feel like more than just a fast food order. engaging in conversations with costumers where encouraged. especially with those who would come on a daily basis, management wanted us to be able to create a genuine relationship with our costumers. i've been working at the pita pit for almost two years now and I don't really have any complainants except for maybe that the job doesn't really offer many opportunities for a raise in salary, unless you decide to work full time or begin to take on hard responsibilities as shift manager or closing shift leader. but besides that the job is quite enjoyable and pleasant. the most enjoyable part of the job would be the interaction with the costumers and the great work atmosphere that exists thanks to the different individuals who currently work there. The most important thing i learned at this job is costumer service and being able to work under pressure.

Typical day would consist of taking care of daily operations such as;

-organizing stock and equipment, ordering supplies and overseeing building maintenance, cleanliness and security
-planning and working to budgets, maximizing profits and achieving  Handling point of sale and cash
- recruiting new staff, training and developing existing staff, motivating and encouraging staff to achieve targets, coordinating staff scheduling, handling customer complaints and problems
-Working to ensure standards of hygiene are maintained and that the restaurant complies with health and safety regulations;
-Devising and marketing promotional campaigns
-Preparing reports and other performance analysis documentation
-Opening and closing of store

Things learned;
-people handling skills, be it customer or the fellow employees .
-training employees
-maintaining cordial relationship with suppliers

Hardest part would be when there would be line up in the store, it usually gets busy during lunch hrs and used to get challenging managing the store.

The most enjoyable part would be to interact with different customers and having that random friendly chat, working with coworkers

So far its been alright. Although I'm and at least 50% of the other coworkers are looking for a secondary job due to hours and pay.

In 20+ Working days ive learned some of the menu. Ive learned maybe 2/3 of the responsibilities.
 if you dont know someone else just takes over for you and you dont really get to learn cause your then told to go do something else.
Its hard to voice your opinion sometimes.
Stress and tension due to outside influence from family members or the Boss stressing out the manager which causes tension between the workers and customers...There seems to be a buddy=buddy hierarchy system thats keeping certain people employed even though they show up late, Or goof off or Don't do their job half the time. Or show up hungover ect. 

The hardest part of the job is not knowing what kind of environment your walking into, If people are happy and talking to eachother or if their yelling in the back

The most enjoyable part about the job would have to be speaking with the customers and getting to provide them with the loving service id give a family member at dinner time. 

The crew and experience/ skills gained are worth it, regulars who are loyal and kind are always a treat, great memories gained. 
However, management is disorganized, understaffed almost all the time while I worked there for 2 years, labor unrealistically low at times so closing or opening is a struggle at times. 
The culture is honestly great, as previously stated, the crew and the regulars are really what make your time working there. 
There is very high stress involved, it is a fast-paced environment especially during busy seasons, working with management (has been subject to change), and it requires a lot of physical work, and attention to detail
The most enjoyable part: the crew! I can't say enough about the people I've met and made friends with! They have become a second family to me. And the regulars I got to serve could make a day in a second.

I have learned that in the food industry where fresh food is mandatory everyday, the work that has to be maintained every hour is important because of the rotation process, the cleaning and the maintainence of the store is crucial to customer satisfaction. A typical day at work at Pita Pit would consist of dealing with technologies such as phones, digital tills, taking orders in person and over the phones, preparing all of the vegetables, meats and cheeses every hour, rotating the food and its contents to make room for newer products, dealing with customers, maintaining the appearance of the store such as cleaning tables, washing windows, cleaning bathrooms, and by making sure that the customer service is exceptional. The hardest part of the job would be having to deal with having all of the prep (meats, cheese, vegetables) prepared in sometimes less than three hours, but whenever I work, I always try my best to have everything done by the deadline that I am given. The most enjoyable part of this job is making people smile everyday, and working with enjoyable co-workwers.

At Pita Pit you must be able to adapt quickly, it is a very high paced work place. As well you need to be a very personable person who can speak with customers throughout the whole process of their order. You need to make sure their experience is a good one and that they remember that the staff was friendly and that they would go back. We did all our own prep in the back and some was fresh right from the market, ie we cut and diced our own tomatoes same with green peppers and onions. We even bought fresh romain lettuce and washed and cut (we went through a lot in a day ). We would do these daily while also keeping the store looking nice and more importantly clean. While always making sure the customer was attended too.I have alot of good memories of the Pita Pit i worked at. My duty as a key holder was to cose the store essentially every night or every shift i was on. This included extra responsibilities and some being very important such as making sure things are off (no fires) and all doors are locked.
