Points West Living

I would honestly not recommend ANYONE to work at Points West Living in their nearby future. Starting out seems super fun and exciting but then the facade starts to fade and the problems arise. Management does not give two rats about your personal life and work you long hours till your tired then guilt trips you into coming in on days off. They also do not care about your opinion because they write you up if you try and question their authority and make you feel like the bad person and possibly get you fired. Sometimes your performing unsafe labor because of the shortage of staff in the facility and residents do see it and get worried that we are abandoning them. Wages are absolute garbage, no one can live off those wages unless your alone and even from that, you can barely feel secure financially which forces you to work more hours and to feel overworked. Some of meals look atrocious especially the special food requests. Most of these residents grew up in their homes, doing things then ripped from their homes to be in care at this facility, at least make some foods look edible to eat. Times I have to bring stuff back to the kitchen to remake something else because no one will eat it because it looks awful and smells awful and barely has taste, some would even go hungry because of it; If you were in their shoes, you would not want that served to you at meal times. So many good workers had to quit due to the pressure, bullying and harassment of management here in this facility, creating a decrease in the level of care, a resident is provided. In conclusion, I would like highly not recommend people working for this company, let alone your mother or father live in this facility due to these problems.

Do not work here . They come across as a company that truly cares about the residents they care for although this is farthest from the truth.  If you know the Canadian Laws and ever stand up to management  they will walk you out. They break the labour laws and don't give allotted break times as per the labour laws and they expect you to work for free. They will only hire individuals that don't no the laws so they can get away with more. There is no job security at all and they make your position known that it can end if you cross them. You cannot stand up for yourself or protect your rights. I watched unqualified staff drop co-workers out of lifts, watched HCAs be given the answers to the medication test just so they could be allowed to give medications.  It's unsafe.
 I love my job and truly care about looking after others and this place scares me. Untrained staff, unprofessional management and it makes it clear the people they hire is the cause for so much elder abuse. Untrained staff. Also they don't know the meaning of confidentiality. A HCA quit due to the bullying and they didn't care and even announced it to everyone. Management talks about you to other staff and anything personal you tell them they tell the entire staff. No confidentiality here again breaking labour laws. I feel bad for the residents as they have no clue what's happening.

Working with seniors is very rewarding and it is done in such a lovely, home-like setting. Points West Living is a phenomenal place for loved ones to live in. I work on the medical floor which is more heavy lifting and higher levels of care provided. The company will provide basic training and also offers the HCA program through Norquest College and they will help you pay for tuition and there is always a tutor on site. It is still a fairly new facility so there are still some things that need to be worked on. The biggest problem, along with most companies, is the line of communication. If I, as an HCA, have a question or conflict it is not clear as to who to go to for the answer. There has been some difficulty keeping staff, which means full-time workers as myself consistently working double shifts or on days off. The hardest part of the job is getting attached to a resident and having them take a turn for the worse, it is very hard to watch. The overall accomplishment of your day is the most enjoyable. There are days that are tougher than others and have more hurdles than usual, but the love and appreciation you receive from the residents makes everything worth it.

Working constantly short. Management does no regular reviews with staff and is afraid of problem solving. There is a buddy culture in Management. Lots of hiring of friends. Lots of speaking Tagalog, so that even residents complain. Working with broken equipment happens often and it takes a long time for anything to get repaired. Ahs pays PWL' s for the staffing. PWL makes huge profits and does not stick anything back into existing homes. Some residents get what ever they want, others not. Teamwork is a foreign word. There is not enough staff to be an Eden Philosophy home. Staff is just a number and the benefits are minimal. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
I don’t really refer to any one working or staying because bad management, not good food for residents. The management not care about the resident  or staff.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management  is very bad, mostly Wellness supervisor, no knowledge of Nursing at all 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Not good at all, always changing the management, if good managers comes other management staff trying pull out to them.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I  always try to do my best, while I am working good management, management change I am done.

-working in Points west Living is a very good experience and career build up.
-I learned basics,such as how to care and attend needs of old aged residents.
-Management is very supportive and helping towards career development and learning process.
-Co-workers are really good at teaching you different aspects of health care based on the respective facility.
-the most enjoyable part of the job is to talk and explore the needs of the resident while having meal with them.

i enjoyed working there  the staff who wrk there are hard working kind and do the best to meet the needs of residents. being that it is a private place its too bad it has to cost so much for ppl to enjoy. many other ppl in the community could very much thrive and enjoy their later yrs if only financial aid was better for them. staff are wrk over time because there just isnt enough to go around, we as care givers are alwasy run off our feet and tired with the endless support we provide to residents needs

Points west needs to change alot of issues or else they are going to have no staff. HCA's do it all and with no appreciation from management for everything we do. Staffing shortages constantly leaving the staff that are there scrambling to get all tasks done as well as assist residents with their needs. Some of the nurses will help but most will not. Residents are being neglected at times but when hcas have a million other tasks to do its kinda hard to follow the "Eden Philosophy " that Points west preaches about. 

Always short staffed because no one wanted to work here. The work load was extremely high , it was long term care not assisted living. On top of your long term care duties you had to clean, do laundry, give meds, give baths, and deliver food and do meal clean up. It did not leave any time for quality time with residents or quality care. This has been an on going issue for years.

I would go to work for night shifts from 11:30pm to 7:30am
I would be responsible for looking out to 34 residents
I have learned to work in a fast pase environment with multiple  tasks at hand
The hardest part of my job was working by myself in the whole building
The most enjoyable part of my job was working and interacting with all the residents in the facility.
