Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge

Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge is probably a really great experience for a lot of people, but the turnover rate is very high. Naturally, this is expected at a resort in a remote location; some people can't handle the seclusion, some are in over their heads. The area that they lose points from me is in compensation & benefits, and  some of the management. The GM is amazing, top notch, couldn't ask for a better General Manager. He truly cares about the staff and the guests and wants what's best for everyone. But some areas of departmental and middle management leave a lot to be desired. There is some disorganization, quite a few egos, and some apathy. Don't get me wrong, the superstars of the teams absolutely make up for most of it, but it's a little depressing to deal with people who are quite obviously tired of being there and aren't willing to grow or improve. Of course, all jobs have their ups and downs, and all resort-type environments have their challenges, but the managers should be the ones out there setting a great example - that can't happen when your attitude is as stale as the snow leftover in the shadow of a ditch in the spring. 

Aside from all that, the compensation really isn't enough to keep the new hires that show up with the right experience. The HR team cares and wants to make things better, but I believe there are corporate restrictions preventing them from improving. 

If you're new to the hospitality industry and resort life, definitely give it a shot, Live the Adventure. You will gain valuable experience, not only professionally, but for your personal life as well. If you're going to PKML with experience, ask for more. They need you and should do what they can to have you, especially if you bring the warmth that they really need.

Do not work here. Although the location is beautiful, it is not worth what comes with working for this company. 

You will not be trained well or looked after after your on-boarding. Management here is the worst I have ever seen in a work place. It is largely made up of incompetent people that do not support their workers. They will overwork you during peak periods and not give you enough hours to survive during slow times due to “business needs”. There is no in between.

Accommodation is cheap which is nice but you will see why when you get here. There was issues with cockroaches and bed bugs during my time here, neither was addressed appropriately, nor were you compensated. They will use the fact that they control your employment and living to force you to do things and threaten to fire you if you don’t (on top of this they give you a week to vacate the premises then give you a 6 month ban of the property). The focus is maximizing profit without any regards for staff. 

There are a lot of great people that come to work here due to the location but sadly often leave too early. If you’d like to live and work in the mountains, consider Canmore, Banff or any of the other businesses in the valley.

Their motto is live the adventure but I can promise you this isn’t the adventure you want to live.

Our management included an abusive individual. They yelled at staff in front of guests, and treated folks unfairly. There was a lot of gossip and managers were focused solely on corporate goals. An insane amount of turn-over from supervisors and managers as they experienced unattainable expectations. 

This resort treats employees as replaceable. 

You'll meet wonderful people from all over Canada and some who are travelling throughout Canada and working during their time. You'll build wonderful friendships with other employees as well and explore the Canadian Rockies while saving a bit of money.

This place runs as a business and overworks their staff, many are often misdirected and positions are extremely variable. 

Toxic work environment as upper management expect perfection while having unrealistic expectations as staff are viewed as replaceable. Folks are overworked, stretched, and exhausted. Be sure to learn about yourself and what protections are put in place by the government. 

I worked here as a bartender for three+ years, the only good thing about this place is the co workers enduring the same horrible work place as you.( even nakiska the ski hill around the corner is garbage). After working my way up the food chain here and putting in way to many hours of work and commitment to this place. I asked for a ONE dollar raise where I was replied to with if you want more money go work somewhere else. Management and front desk have absolutely no clue what they are doing and for the most part are very creepy and unprofessional. They can’t keep any staff around for the most part because there is zero work to life balance and they expect you to be there whenever called as if you have no life outside of work. Staff residence is an absolute dump to say the least . And last but not least The management team actually started taking away tips from us without notification… what a complete joke and disgrace this hotel it.

PKML is a wonderful destination property in the middle of the Canadian Rockies. If you like a good mix of outdoor work and play, it's the perfect spot to be. There are lots of hours to work if you want to make money, and opportunities to help other departments if the hours are slow in your own. Rent at staff accommodation is the cheapest I have ever paid in Canada, and most of the staff living there are super friendly making it feel like a small community. There are great staff trips organized for the staff, and TONNES of trails right behind where you live to go explore. If you like to stay inside, it's probably not the best place to work. Otherwise, if you like to keep busy and active outside between shifts, this place is great!

GM does a great job of aligning departments. Some days can be long due to high business volume and short staffing levels but that is very typical in this industry post pandemic. The company invests in their people better than any company I've been a part of, it is a large commitment to work there since your options are to live in staff housing or drive a fair distance (which you are also compensated for). If you are willing to make a small sacrifice it is very worth it for career advancement and personal development. They help cultivate innovative leaders by helping them work through their challenges. Very worth your time to work at this property.

My boss was great  but company itself pays low wages and after being let go because of covid I was never contacted to go back which was promised . I loved area but felt that HR department were judgemental and held grudges. I moved my family across country to work here and after 7 months was being prepared to be promoted to supervisor position but was never contacted back and that was hard on my family as I was left with no work or options and no income to move to Calgary with my family . Now it’s over year later and after completing 3rd class exams being released was blessing in disguise as my options are now ten fold ! Still sad however to see how this company treats people Who in short time dedicated a lot and was looking forward to being a leader in my department. 



The hotel was beautiful and the people I worked with were wonderful, but management was lacking. Hotel manager was very demanding and disrespectful of staff and my direct manager was a grouchy but would at least stand up for his staff. Compensation was not a liveable wage, no proper benefits, and I sometimes I felt like I was being pulled in a million directions being forced to prioritize some tasks over others and then getting in trouble for not completing everything. I would have needed to cut myself in 5 pieces to do everything they expected of me. Very stressful work environment but mostly really liked the people I worked with. 

Overall, the experience was decent. The team was good and the work environment was positive, with generally respectful treatment from management and colleagues, though supervision could be stronger, as sometimes rooms were not cleaned properly and there's a lot of complaints from guests. The distribution of rooms among RAs can be unfair at times, making the workload uneven.
The staff accommodation is reasonable for the price.
The cafeteria leaves room for improvement in terms of food quality and taste.
Overall, it was a learning experience, and I appreciated the supportive aspects of the team, though there are opportunities to improve management, organization, and dining options, but most of all management need to be adjust.

The best enjoyment was seeing mountians everyday, very high school environment, zero professionalism.

No support from team, when you needed to address something you were not recognized.

The environment and culture was poor, I found a lot of situations to be childish and it was challenging to get support. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day of working, as a housekeeper you were not allowed to leave until all rooms were cleaned and even if no one helped you but you continuously helped others you next got support when you needed it
