Prairie Gardens and Adventure Farm

The farm is a busy place.  Its a great outdoors job!  There are plants to look after, trees to water, customers to help, and gardens to grow.   I found that their buddy system was very helpful to get oriented. Learn by doing is how I do best.  There was specific training on safety protocols with a free first aid course that I attended to get my certification.  I learned a ton about plants, and fruits.  There was an excellent free staff lunch program and free farm veggies as part of a CSA program as perks - which was great!   I helped with the agri-tourism aspects of the farm - how to give a puppet show and a farm tour and how to give people a chance to experience the farm.  I learned that farming is hard work, and have gained a whole new appreciation for the produce I buy.  I really loved the Payhonin National Healing forest  - which is a conservation project on the farm.  They have an indigenous Elder in Residence - Elder Bill - who gave teachings on the rooted nation - the trees! I have a new respect for nature and am grateful for the experiences I had on the farm.  

A typical day at work would start with cleaning before opening. So cleaning the bunny cages, goat pens, and sheep pens. Feed all the animals. Chickens, bunnies, goats, sheep, alpaca. Make sure the out houses are clean and make sure kitchen is clean. Basically make sure everything is clean before people come in. I learned how to work with people and communicate with unhappy customers and also to take care of animals i haven't before. Th co-workers were all so friendly and fun to work with. There wasn't really a hard part of my job it was more fun then anything.

The owner of Prairie Gardens is an extremely difficult person to work with and work for. 

I liked my position and the people I worked with, but working under a tyrant was very difficult. For the amount of work I did at that farm you would think you would get a simple thank you, but working for someone so ungrateful can be frustrating and unrewarding.

Co-workers we're amazing to work with constantly, the owner/boss wasn't ever concerned with injuries at the workplace and didnt really care but made it sound like it was your fault for your injuries.

The boss was very toxic, they either loved you or hated you, no in-between. Everyone would walk on eggshells around them, fearful they'd say the wrong thing. 

If you like getting paid as a little as possible and getting that little amount of pay once per month then this is the job for you. The upside is that theres a ton of animals there.

It's a fun place to work seasonally and mostly a young person's job. However, it was still a good experience! If you are looking for seasonal work, I would recommend it. 

Working outdoors with lots of stuff to do always changing with lots of things to do while on shift lots of friendly people to work with and the visitors

Management doesn’t care about workers and their customers at all. Ignores workplace safety and food safety measures. Pretends to care about green initiatives

This job is fun if you enjoy a fast paced environment and lots of kids! It is a far drive if you live in Edmonton (about 45 minutes one way) so keep that in mind.
