I regret to say that my time as an Admin Assistant at FS did not meet my expectations.  The dept I work on seemed unbalanced, with admin staff frequently taking on responsibilities that went beyond the typical scope of the role - yet there was little compensation to match the added demands working for 11-12 site managers. 

Another challenge was the limited professional dev't support. While PHC’s mission in patient care is commendable, I found fewer opportunities for Admin staff to grow professionally, such as comprehensive training or mentorship. This hindered morale and made it difficult to feel that the organization was invested in my long-term career path.

Although there were dedicated individuals who genuinely cared about the well-being of colleagues and patients alike, the leadership’s approach is lacking. Suggestions for re-work didn’t always gain traction, and follow-up on submitted ideas was rare.

Overall, I believe improvements in communication, workload management, and consistent professional development opportunities would greatly enhance the experience for Admin Assistants. PHC has the potential to be a more supportive workplace, but in my personal experience, those changes were not implemented during my tenure.

I work in the Emergency department and I love it. I’ve worked in a number of other hospitals but this is my favorite so far. A significant portion of our patients are quite marginalized; with high rates of poverty, mental illness, and addiction issues. This can result in a bit of a crazy place to work at times (ie. people shouting & throwing things), but the work is meaningful and our team is amazing. It’s the most collaborative work environment that I’ve had the pleasure to be a part of. When things get tough - you’ve got lots of people ready to help - it’s a real team effort. 

As we are waiting for a new hospital to be built (in the next decade), minimal site repairs are being done. This is unfortunate as the department continues to look more shabby. Some care projects have also been put on hold for this same reason. 

It is currently well staffed. Our doctors are kind, thoughtful, and super smart. Management is supportive. There is a ton of funded educational opportunities.

If you want a calm, lavender-scented place to work, it’s probably not for you. If you like an adventure, have a good sense of humor, and have a compassionate heart then this place could be a great new work-home for you. Welcome to the team.

I can't say enough positive things about Providence (PHC). I worked here for 8 years and because of personal circumstances, I left for a bit and worked at other places but NOTHING really compared. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to return to PHC recently and I would never leave again. Where do I begin? Super fun ppl to work with who are also brilliant. Strong collaboration across all positions and levels. A culture of compassion, empathy and respect. Very emotionally safe place to work to be your authentic self and have your opinions heard and valued.  Challenging work, never a dull or boring moment, but still supportive of work life balance and flexible working arrangements. Competitive Salary, amazing benefits (Generous Vacation Time and a Defined Benefit Pension) and developmental opportunities. I think the Mission and Values of PHC are really lived by everyone who works here, no matter what your position is. It really is just a "special" place to work.  

A typical day would include report from the previous shift, greeting my patients and administering medications.  I would also lead groups and assist patients in personal care when required.  Other duties would be to take vitals and perform other skills such as wound care and oxygen administration, safety checks and behavior care planning.

My co-workers make up a team of caring and enthusiastic people who are dedicated to  making the stay of our patients as positive and healing as possible.

I have learned that the most important element of this job is treating patients and families with respect and empathy with the vision of improving their ability to cope with mental illness.

The hardest part of the job is having to discharge patients to a shelter as well as the unfortunate reality of patient suicide.

The most enjoyable part of the job is the satisfaction of making a difference in the lives of patients and families however small.

Greet patients and visitors at the desk in a friendly, courteous manner.
Coordinate admission o patients.
Assist nurse with room assignments when necessary.
Initiate labeled medical record on admission.
Assure prompt completion of admission diagnostic work with assistance from RN/LPN.
Notify nurse of any stat treatments or medication.
Coordinate discharge/transfer of resident.
Prepare medical record for discharge.
Answer telephone efficiently and courteously and relay messages and calls to appropriate personnel and patients. Also relay information to other departments as needed.
Answer patient intercom promptly and courteously and refer urgent requests to the nurse immediately.
Transcribe physician orders.
Make requisitions for diagnostic studies, make out Medication Administration Record (MAR) and Kardex and assure completion of stat orders.
Notify the nurse of new orders and assure orders are double­checked for transcription by the nurse.

Being employed by Providence Health Care has been a life changing experience for me.
I have enjoyed coming to work every day for the past 6+ years.
Everyday I am learning on the job. I am grateful for the opportunity I have been given by Providence Health Care. 
The hardest part about my job would be seeing some traumatic things on a daily basis. But with Providence Health care they provide excellent counselling service to make sure workers are physically fit and mentally fit. 
The most enjoyable part about my job is knowing I have an employer who has my back and wants to see every employee succeed in the line of work they do. I enjoy seeing the smile on patients faces and people who thank me or tell me I am doing a great job. People aren't necessarily wanting to come to the hospital, so making their stay at the hospital as comforting as possible is my mission as an employee.

The work itself is easy, the training is subpar but you learn along the way. And when you work enough you learn who out of your coworkers you can go to for help. Management is nonexistent as they’re always in meetings. Over the years great management have left and have been replaced with BFFs who are more concerned about planning trips together and have no idea how to run an office. They have created a work culture of toxicity and keep hiring friends.  The biggest gripe for most workers in staffing is that there is no trust in leadership. We have brought forth our concerns in townhall meetings and or anonymous surveys but nothing happens. We have spoken to the union but their hands are tied as well. Staffing is at the lowest part of the figurative totem pole. But the staff stay, most of us are just trying to get to retirement and call it a day. 

Going onto year 3 with new management (again) that has zero clue what the department is about. It is really hard for employees to work under people who are in over their heads. Not having confidence in management makes for a stressful workplace as people start to do what they want and hard working knowledgeable people get all of the work dumped on them.

The most enjoyable part of the job is being able to work on your own at your desk and put ear buds in.

You can learn a lot in health records and that is great.

The hardest part of the job is trying to work under incompetent management.

Great for someone who already knows what they are doing, doesn’t need to make a living wage and has flexible shifts.

My typical day at work would consist of booking appointments, answering calls, calling patients, filing, creating new charts for patients, faxing, managing loose reports and doing completions.

I learned what I never learned in school, which was how to communicate with patients. I learned of the many different types of people that need professional health care.

My co-workers were all supportive, friendly, and caring towards each others, as well as the patients.

The hardest part of the job was probably the commute. Since I live a little far from the hospital.

The most enjoyable part of the job was the whole learning experience and getting along with my co-workers, as well as the feeling of being able to help others.

Working with PHC for a little over two years, I have noticed there is very little opportunity for job advancement. They keep recycling the same employees to other PHC sites for same positions but just use them as "temporary." Not allowing new applicants for leadership positions. They are also very cheap in hiring necessary staff for their units and making current employees work double shifts or give them unrealistic shift duties to complete in one shift. When you voice your valid concerns to management they either brush it off altogether or turn it around to make you look like the problem. Very little internal job positions available since it is a small health authority.
