Public Works

•	Read and interpret drawings, circuit diagrams and electrical code specifications to determine wiring layouts for new or existing installations.
•	Troubleshoot, repair, maintain  electrical systems based on the Canadian electrical code.
•	Performs preventive maintenance on electrical systems, equipment and components according to a preventive maintenance.
•	Install brackets and hangers to support electrical equipment
•	Install, replace and repair lighting fixtures and electrical control and distribution equipment, such as switches, relays and circuit breaker panels.
•	Splice, join and connect wire to fixtures and components to form circuits.
•	Test continuity of circuits using test equipment to ensure compatibility and safety of system following installation, replacement or repair.
•	Troubleshoot and isolate faults in electrical systems and remove and replace faulty components
•	Completes the required actions deemed necessary following the completion of preventive maintenance tasks or the failure of a component; maintains the replacement parts inventory.
•	Responds to service calls from customers in different buildings (Defence National, Health Canada, Parliament Hill..etc), performs related tasks and performs the required follow-up.
•	Test electrical and electronic equipment and components for continuity, current, voltage and resistance.
•	Maintain, repair, test and install electrical motors.
•	Conduct preventive maintenance programs and keep maintenance records.

A typical day at  work as part of a team of five, I organized and maintained for retention and disposal by applying the five main life cycle events to the records using Block Numeric records systems. I also performed some minor translation duties for various English and French-speaking staff such as responding to client requests via e-mail or by phone, coordinated the receiving, analyzing, distributing and responding to electronic and paper communications to facilitate the flow of information in the workplace.

The job had its moments on occasion and I got along with quite a lot of my co-workers, often being able to work at our own pace. We definitely got a lot of exercise on the job, often moving boxes equaling up to 66 pounds in weight. The only downside would often be having to do the same job more than twice on some occasions whenever there was an oversight in the record-keeping, which meant having to repackage, relabel and restock the affected boxes over and over until the numbers matched the data on the retention cycle lists I was given.

While working with PWGSC I had opportunities to help programmers and end-users with software or database problems.  Management did a good job of keeping the bureaucracy from affecting our jobs.  People were co-operative and friendly.  The hardest and most enjoyable part of the job were those problems that would come up every few months which nobody had seen before.  They were interesting to solve.

When we were transitioned into SSC, the focus changed from support to services.  We were charged with keeping the lights on, just giving cookie cutter services.  Management delegated much of the management work down to the working level where employees became too busy.  There was little co-operation with others, if our service was working then it wasn't our problem.

Every day is a new and exciting challenge as priorities change constantly.  You're never faced with the same challenge, problem, or opportunity!

Work requires a very broad set of skills, experiences, and knowledge and challenges you daily to address very unique, interesting and exciting problems that arise out of nowhere!  As such, you're required to think critically, be creative, and innovate constantly!

Overview of Duties:
• Contact client on telephone and with e-mail to obtain information for employment selection processes
• Create and update spreadsheets and word documents, filing folders
• Format, print and scan letters from clients received through e-mail or fax
• Research client information within our system
• Verify Variable Work Sheet Schedules and Extra Duty Pay/Shiftwork Reports
• Enter and research data in HRMS
• Manage and file records and e-mails

I enjoyed this job very much.  I was included in the process of the opening of the new Pay Center in Miramichi, NB, and got to experience a lot of the different procedures and duties that came with it.

I am with the Knights of Colombus. The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.  I like to be part of an association and to participate to bring help/good will to people who needs it.  I like the outdoors like fishing and hunting.

We should ask ourselves what we can do to make things better not how come I don't have this or that.

One great way to learn about full time job's and how to keep them is, what I learned about when I went to the YMCA's FPSYIP (Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program) I was placed in a program to set me up for a Government job. I really liked working with my mentor and the staff at the YMCA. It's unfortunate that I was unable to obtain a position at the end of my internship. I really liked helping clients and staff with their work related needs, filing, maintaining photocopiers and printers, Internal mail sorting pick up and delivering.

Duties:
- Pay bills and reconcile payments;
- Create purchase orders to order office equipment and furniture;
- Supervise admin staff;
- Provide advice and guidance on policies and procedures;
- Deliver accommodation projects such as fit-ups and relocations;
- Recruit, staff, hire, train and conduct on-going performance review of employees; 
- Provide strategic advice to senior management on programs;
- Manage fleet and assets; and 
- Plan, monitor, manage and administer delegated signing authority for corporate administration budgets.

Though it has been awhile since I was there, there was always a lot of opportunity to learn new skills and they had a focus on continuing education. I liked the challenge that Issues Management provided as acting as a liaison between Ottawa and the Region. It gave me the opportunity to learn the Department's business on a level that I wouldn't have been able to otherwise. My co-workers were very supportive and were fun to hang out with at lunch and outside of work.

Deeply interesting work environment. Wonderfully dedicated people trying hard to deliver safe, healthy workplaces and other major infrastructures. Changing priorities, staff turnover and lack of retention as the boomers leave for retirement. Great environment to learn about facilities management, building information management, construction project delivery, applicability and value of different auditing and oversight methods in dealing with outsourced contracts.
