Pusateris Fine Foods

They like to throw words at you like "foster growth" and "opportunities" but in reality they don't want any of that.  They like to say we are "leaders" not "managers" but when they are on the floor it's anything but leading.  The higher up the manager, the less they care about you.  They are some of the most selfish inconsiderate I've ever seen in my life.  The turnaround is so awful in these stores you will often find ASMs or even the SM behind a counter all day making sandwiches or pouring soup.  It's sad.  All you had to do to avoid that was not treat the workers there so poorly, make them feel like a part of a team and get your head out of the sand.  The expectation of what they want from a part timer is far more than what they should ever get, and instead of training people in the right way, they push them the wrong way, and people leave.  This company is a perfect case of what happens when you let children run a company.  There is so much money that is thrown away on a daily basis, sometimes on purpose.  The disconnect between head office and store level is alarming.  
The best thing about working here is the people, the staff (non managers).  There are some really great people and that alone can make it great to be at work.  If you're looking for a part time gig on the side, sure no problem.  If you're looking for a career, don't waste your time here you won't find it.

I worked at this location for over a year and a half, was promised advancement as I worked, and was stuck at my base level minimum wage position the entire duration I was there. No matter how well I did it never mattered, so I ended up giving them the bare minimum since giving them my all gave me absolutely no benefit.

The management expected you to do everything with bare minimum training. This includes dealing with customers, cleaning up, taking inventory, breaking apart skids that arrive, cutting and packaging product, etc.

I worked there full-time, and was never given my full-time benefits, despite working there for nearly two years.

Most of my co-workers in my department HATE working there. We are forced to will out these phony smiles as we interact with customers, who were at times incredibly frustrating to deal with. Since its a higher end location they felt incredibly entitled, so issues dealing with rude rich people were commonplace.

I am not sure what to really say, its not the worst job. It is retail after all.

I recommend getting in only if you need to pay bills, career wise there is not much room for movement so if you are looking beyond store level I wish you best of luck. (Head office is basically downsized)

Currently many of the head office types are jumping ship (20+ year types) and it makes you wonder... sales have been down significantly from previous years and the amount of labor used is being paid for in ways I absolutely cannot answer. 
Oakville closed last year, next is Sherway for sure, and I would not be shocked to see Queen go. 

Workplace culture is one of favoritism, through and through. 

Benefits are for full time only and kick in after 6 months.

Vacations are always unpaid, you do not have a choice in getting paid out in every paycheck...so if you are not a great saver, you will hurt if you take time off. 

Tons of frill and little to no substance. 

If you're a numbers person, they care about margins and not volume. 
Hopefully someone figures out that overcharging 50% on something that does not sell still nets you a margin of 0.

My time at Pusateris was short lived, for many reasons. The place is poorly run, there are so many managers here, and people who think they're mangers here, so the working environment is hostile, and frustrating. You'll regularly have two "managers" telling you two different things. Pusateris also has in house chefs, and they can be condecending too. Someone is always breathing down your back. You aren't allowed to talk with any of your coworkers, just in case you wanted those long 9-10 hr shifts go by faster, and you're always expected to be doing something. You can't just relax for 5 minutes. The newer you are, the more they expect you to work like a dog. Everyone seems so nice and friendly at first, but there is a reason why this place has a HIGH turnover rate. You will get treated like dust. If you consider working here.. Which I wouldn't recommend, I suggest counting your hours. They regularly underpay people too, then give you the runaround when you want your money.

Everyone hates being there. The only sense of comraderie you have is knowing that all of you are drowning together. Store managers either lack the basic technical skills needed to help departments, or have those skills but are too lazy and unfocused to put them to good use. On boarding of new team members is like pulling teeth, often taking weeks to fill vacancies. This places stress on other workers causing their eventual burn out, their desire to find a new job, a new vacancy, and even more work placed on all those who remain. Management will never be accountable for their own mistakes, often times overstepping department heads, slashing orders without communicating, over ordering date-sensitive products under the department managers name, pulling team members to other departments without communication and the list goes on.

It should have been a red flag to me that everyone refers to this company as a "great stepping stone". Do not make the same mistake.

They throw words around like "fostering growth" and "leadership opportunities" but they are just dangling carrots in front of you.  They want you to smile at all times and be happy but managers are constantly yelling and talking down to you.  They are too self absorbed to even attempt to help you through anything, you are literally dirt on the ground to them.  Most don't even know what they are doing anyway, they are just "yes men" to the owners.  The head office team often come in and point out your inadequacies while they sit in their ivory tower setting the company up for failure.
Human Resources is a joke, don't ever think you can go to them for anything here.  They would rather fire someone in HR for trying to help than actually see someone get assistance.  Ask them how many HR reps have been fired in the last year.
The only saving grace of this place are your fellow co-workers, but it's more of a "we're all dying together" type of friendship you'll gain.
Avoid this place at all costs.  They are the absolute worst place to work for!

A company that is still growing, as well as adapting to the changes in the industry since Covid, Pusateri's has got some of the best food in the city and the attention to the highest standards for their products is there in the quality. I wish there was more attention to SOPs and addressing a culture that is often too lax or too focused on everyone doing their own thing, instead of working across departments as a single team that is learning and thriving together. A lack of huddles/team meetings means that a lot of the crew often don't know what's going on in their own store. All in all, a good place to come if you're new to the industry and eager to learn. 
The locations around Toronto give the stores a palpable feeling of community, and often feel like a diamond amongst local establishments, although one that could use some polishing.

I worked at the sherway location for about 5 months as a "Culinary expert". This review will probably be read by current Management & potential employees, so I'll do a two separate reviews

For Management:

-People don't quit jobs, they quit management
- Don't expect employees to give luxury custmor service with minimum pay 
- Listen to employees. You can't learn while talking

The turnover rate is very high... Consider my advice ^


For potential employees:

- Don't take the job seriously. They are so low on staff, you'll never get fired 
- Most people are great people, so you'll make friends
- If you want a career in Culinary, this is a good first step. If not, you'll learn some basics 
- Their is not room for advancement

Conclusion:

I won't recommended working here just because the pay is awful for the service you have to provide.

Honestly, this place was impossible with scheduling. I was in school and they needed me to work 2-3 shifts during the week, 5 hours each and two 8 hour shifts on the weekends. I was part-time and I was told I needed to work a minimum amount of hours. That was a lie because people in other departments worked 1 to 2 shifts a week including weekends. 
I had the best work ethic out of my coworkers and more experience than some and I was the lowest paid. 
Then on top of that the management was completely unresponsive to complaints of pay or hours they would just respond "we need you to work; we have no one else".
They never hired anyone new to help out. Didn't care that everyone was over worked.

Great staff.  Over all the work environment was good.  Management however did not seem to take into consideration production numbers of each department when sheduling. Leaving many areas of the comissary sorrily under staffed with high volumes of production numbers.  I witnessed my supervisor having to beg for extra hands one day in order to help our department with unreasonable amounts of product to be produced for the three people scheduled.  Your scheduled for 9. hours a day (two 10 min paid breaks and 30 min break unpaid included) but there are 12 or more hours of work to be done every day.  It was a sheduling logistics nightmere.  Way to stressful  for the amount of pay.
