As a teaching assistant, I was given ample opportunities to collaborate with knowledgeable and passionate faculty members. Overall, my time as a teaching assistant at Queen's University was nothing short of exceptional. It provided me with a platform to contribute to students' academic journeys while furthering my own professional growth. A typical day at work included greeting many coworkers and patients personally and/or via telephone and email. Each day brought something new such as, different diagnoses or complicated test results. The hardest part of my job was knowing patients would be given upsetting news regarding their health. The most enjoyable part of my job included satisfied patients when they were given a treatment plan and when I was able to comfort them with the knowledge that I was available to them night or day and could just be a sounding board or able to act as a liaison between themselves and their physicians.

Queen’s University pushed through a two tiered pay structure a few years back that has Caretakers and Custodians doing the same work but Caretakers earn approx $10 less an hour :(

Labour shortages and the departments inability to attract or retain employees is causing extra work loads for existing employees.

Training and ongoing coaching is non existent and new hires rarely know what to do or where things are. Most end up quitting.

High management turn over. 

Management all have less than a year of experience on average. No leadership. Top management is reactive and always behind the eight ball instead of proactively planning and developing systems.

It’s a great job is the pay was higher and if management could get their act together.




We have many ongoing updates to the steam plant- new softeners - new controls for boiler and steam lines. In the winter months we are assistant shift operators to take readings and do water testing and to assist the 2nd class shift operator in any situation in safe operation and maintaining the plant.
Management is very willing to work with the team of engineers to provide a safe and cooperative work environment.
My co-workers are very diligent and have work ethics second to none.(in my opinion)
I don't have a hard part to my job. I enjoy going to work.
I am still learning new equipment and involved in new upgrades as technology comes to the plant.

I feel ad many do the my employer is only geared to the student. Their staff is ocer worked with little thanks. There is no compassion at all if you are sick or family illness or what ever is happening in one's life at the moment. You are expected to leave your personal life at the door when you get to your office. No sympathy at and they do not tolerate mental illness in their staff. They do in the students but not for staff. Management have been none to make derogatory comments with no repercussion when a grevience is submitted against them. I live the job but not the people I work with. 

Queen's University provides its employees with opportunities for personal growth and development. Management resources are provided to foster a productive work ethic and well-being. Employees are both supportive and highly knowledgeable in their selected fields and willing to provide additional assistance if needed. The most enjoyable part of the job is working with a vast array of employees who come from diverse backgrounds and are willing to share a plethora of knowledge.

The team that I work with make it worth being here, but management fails to understand the field in which we work. This makes it very difficult for us to create anything truly innovative, which is massively restricting in any creative field. No new contracts are ever created for us either, so 95% of the employees are at risk of losing their jobs at any given time - which makes for a very unhealthy work/life balance and overall mental health.

Initially was given a research problem to solve. Consisted of developing a dosage form for a novel therapeutic drug for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. Developed and engineered a dosage design which was then tested and analysed to ensure its efficacy for treatment and toxicity in vitro. On a day to day basis I was also responsible for the regular maintenance of the laboratory equipment along with calibration of machinery and general cleanliness of the lab.

Every Day meet and greet different students with a smile.
I learned customer service in a fast-paced environment and complete all our duties on time. 
Every day different work to do like cashier, line, salad bar, line, deli, burger.
Making sure all station is filled with appropriate food items. 
The enjoyable part of the job is all staff member is so friendly even the manager and supervisor, they are always ready to help when it is busy.

Great to work with the students 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Nothing, it gets hard to do my job and then have to do other's work too. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I was on the Heath and safety committee. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I don't work anymore. I am on long-term leave.
