If you work at Tomlinson Environmental Services - Industrial Waste Division, you will be chronically subjected to waste chemical products on the spectrum from unhealthy to deadly, as well as seriously incompetent management. Extremely dangerous chemicals are mixed and/or bulked here, indoors, with little to no ventilation. I'm posting this because I would otherwise feel somewhat responsible if someone was hurt here. This applies not just to chemical technicians, but to general labourers as well. 

Until there are serious structural changes at this company, the management will know very little about the work they are overseeing, as they come from non-hazardous industries. Some managers function as the liaison between upper and lower management, and since upper management is not directly aware of the issues going on in the facility (HQ is far away,) these managers will act as though there are no issues, thus demonstrating that they are doing good work. 

A station that is used to bulk waste chemicals is located approximately 10 feet from a fume hood, and the warehouse fills up with hydrochloric acid fumes every time this chemical is bulked. You can avoid this hazard by wearing PPE, but other workers are required to walk through this area. Bringing up this obvious hazard will result in you being told that you are doing your job incorrectly, and the manager pretending that they are so informed about the hazards of your job that there is no reason for anyone to be concerned, thus pressuring you into doing work that is self-evidently hazardous to your health, and that the facility is not equipped to handle. If you are gullible, you will fall for this. I was directly lied to multiple times during meetings with one such manager, and concerns that my coworkers and I had were not acted upon because upper management so rarely visits the facility that they don't get a clear impression of how things are being run, and thus cannot do proper QA of their employees. I have no reason to suspect that our concerns were ever passed on to the people relevant to orchestrating such changes in the first place.

Some positive points include decent pay, and the 'foot-in-the-door' effect, allowing you to move to other, better positions in Tomlinson. There are also a few good people in lower-level management, and the culture among the workers is generally nice. I wouldn't work here again.

Long days that don’t really feel like you’re living or part of any sort of community.

The nature of the work is dangerous and somewhat underpaid. Foremans taking less risk push your pace to fulfil their own bonuses, creating tension with labourers that do most of the hard work. 

A culture where you can’t bring up any issues with management (people are way too scared to get in trouble and lose their livelihoods or safe working jobs).

No clear structure for advancement. Production goals offer little room for proper training and safety procedures. Management acts seemingly like an old boys club. 

Needs compassion and understanding from the top down and back up again. 
With money comes a lot of greed and construction makes heaps of it, especially a conglomerate like this.  

Each step up the ladder the egos seem to get worse and worse and they accomplish less and less, while the bottom gets evermore depleted and burnt-out. It’s tiresome. 

In the end, I’d much rather be around people who want respect over entitlements. We’re all in this fight called life together. 

One saving grace here is that the ‘business’ side of things has DESTROYED all industry worldwide. Construction just lies on the worst end of a bad spectrum. 

Take away the jealousy and the pressure; add some hope and everyone here are great, wonderful people from the bottom up!

At the end of each day, respect keeps us where we want to be and shows us where we need to go. 

I’m truly glad with the time I spent there but like any real professional, we need to continually push the pace. 

The future relies on us to figure out a better way to be.. Or not to be; that is the literal question!

What is the best part of working at the company?
Nothing. No such thing as a free lunch, accepting a job there because they have a cheap meal plan is a deal with the devil.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Terrible management/managers who micromanage and have no trust in their subordinates. Unnecessary long hours and no explicit deadlines, but they'll always use "not meeting deadlines" as an excuse to fire you to suit their purposes.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Non existent. They pretend to have a culture and go through the motions to put up a facade that one exists, but you'll soon find out it's all a jig set up by dumb country hicks and trailer trash people.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Miserable and soul sucking.  If you want to be in a job where you wake up pulling your hair out due to a daily does of existential crises, this is the place for you.

I am always looking to gain new skills and experience and unfortunately Tomlinson doesn’t seem interested in providing that. I’ve been told that they are not a training facility after requesting training and advancement opportunities. 

In my role, the hours are pretty consistent. However, there’s basically no communication from white hats (with the exception of one in my experience) or the office. It all seems to be almost trade secrets and those of us at the bottom are expected to perform to expectations that haven’t been communicated to us. 

There’s a constant expectation to work harder to pick up the slack from being so short staffed as the turnaround at this division is insanely high. Management tends to make promises to either get people in the door to begin with or to try to convince them to stay but they don’t make good on those promises. So people leave. 

It’s really dependent on what you’re looking for and unfortunately, it’s not been what I was looking for. 

Was hired as a sales rep.  This was anything but the case.  This job was fantastic if when I was doing the job I was hired to do (outside sales representative). However your time spent in the office is closely monitored and your are expected to be there most of the time.  This makes customer visits difficult.  Also the admin and operations tasks far outweigh any sales activities.  By the time I left I was spending 60% of my time doing non sales related tasks.  Management is on top of you to explain every part of your day, they track your whereabouts through the gps in the company vehicle and question everything.   Even if you are above targets this doesn’t seem to matter.  They are more concerned about how things look then actual results.   

I’ve been working with Tomlinson for just over a year now, at first I was very scared to go to a big company like that but I’m very glad I did end up going cause I really enjoy working here, Tomlinsons management is very kind and always coming out to job sites asking us how everything is. All the people I work with and have met are super nice and willing to teach you. You definitely need to work hard and sometimes there isn’t time for breaks but that’s apart of the job. The only thing I’d say about Tomlinson that I think needs to change is how much Merch they hand out, in the year I’ve been there I’ve only received 1 hat, other then that I’d recommend this company to anyone. 

Tomlinson ready mix pay a very good hourly wage and this is where it ends. My experience was not what I was expecting. Make sure you fully understand how the hours work. The top drivers will always get the most hours. They will be called in every day first and foremost. The newly hired drivers will be called in last. For over two months after training was completed I averaged just a little over 20 hours a week. If you need a 40+ hour work week, you may want to consider a lesser paying job with guaranteed hours. If hours are not important and you don’t mind never knowing from day to day if you are working or not, the pay is good. 

The interview process at this company was one of the most unprofessional and degrading experiences I’ve had. From the moment I walked in, I was met with clear bias and dismissive behavior that made it obvious I was being judged beyond my qualifications. The panel showed little respect, with condescending reactions and a lack of basic professionalism throughout. The entire experience felt more like a humiliation exercise than a fair evaluation. I left feeling disrespected and undervalued, and it raised serious concerns about the company’s commitment to inclusion, fairness, and basic workplace respect.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Having Christmas off was always nice.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Dealing with the obvious favoritism of others, the gossip mills and the lack of true leadership and knowledge.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It's all toxic. The managers have a deluded sense of self and are incredibly entitled.


What is a typical day like for you at the company?
The desire to do a good job was always met with lack of leadership and encouragement.

A typical day at work is high stress, major pressure, never being good enough, no accommodations and nothing but people who will throw you under the bus in a second. I learned to not trust anyone. Management is terrible and just a bunch of puppets controlled by the head office and if they don’t like you watch out. They will do everything in their power to make your life miserable. No work/life balance and they do not care about you, your well being, your family or mental health (no matter how much they preach about mental health). Don’t waste your time. Apply elsewhere.
