RIVERVIEW GARDENS

It was a part time job, 2 time a week, helping an old guy in his ADLs. Usually the wife is the one calling me when she needs assistance or when she have some errands and needs someone to take a look of her husband. I usually work for 3-5 hours. I accompany this old guy going outside- mall to watch movie, to the library and most especially going to his favorite cafeteria. Since his condition, I always say my name and stuffs repeatedly and usually orients him where we are, the date and etc., I worked for them for 1 1/2 months and I could tell that his wife was really good and nice to me. She prepares food for both of us and gives us money every time we go out. On the other side, the old guy was also good, there were no bad instances happened. I could say that the hardest part of my job was testing my patience, since I also keep repeating stories ans stuffs to him. It was satisfying because I was able to help the family and enjoyed the bond that we had. After sometime, they decided to put the old guy in the nursing home.

Poor management leads to a negative morale within this facility.  The pay is great, if you don't mind being scheduled to work 3 different shifts in 1 week, on multiple different care units.  The incontinuity of care is difficult for the residents who live there.  Individuals who rely on routine are stripped of these rights, because they often will be cared for by several different staff members weekly, which causes stress and anxiety for many.    Staff  members of more than 5 years are considered "casual" They still do not have a "Part Time" or "Full Time" position, and are routinely denied vacations.  Although management has never missed a summer vacation of course  ;)  

I worked a variety of shifts. I would assist with activities of daily living, like dressing and feeding seniors.I learned how to relate to aggression, and behaviors as I worked on the Alzheimer's unit. I worked with great staff and clients. The hardest part was working fast and dealing with obstacles all day long. The most enjoyable part was
bieng around all these wonderful people.

Riverview  Gardens placement  taught me to assisted Motions Specialties Representive, Occupational therapy and head of Restorative care with developing residents care plans.
Taught classes and group exercises to seniors and developmentally delayed adults.
Supported residents with unique healthcare needs including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Stroke victims.

Working at Riverview Gardens for the short amount of time i did, it taught me a few things. Somethings it taught me was patience, team work, and independence.
I met great people during my time at RVG, and I would happily go back and work there any day.

When I was at Riverview Gardens for my student placement I thought that interacting with the residents was the highlight of the placement. Another great part of Riverview Gardens was the amazing staff there. They were very supportive and answered any questions that the resident, the family, or myself had.

Great environment, friendly and helpful staff. Management are easy to talk to and listen when you need them. The hardest part of the job is not being able to spend the time I want to spend with the residents. The most rewarding part of the job is the smile I get from my residents

developed Long range strategic plans, worked with senior centres in developing a plan for seniors at home; Large home with secure unit - therefore many challenges; staff, management team excellent.

Riverview Gardens is a great place to volunteer for you are working with amazing staff and meeting new Residents everyday.  You help the staff with programs and help bring residents down to programs from different floors.

A typical day at my job is very busy.  The time flies by and there is never a boring moment.  Management in my department runs a tight ship and follows the guidelines and takes what we do very seriously.  Listens to concerns.
