Caring for residents and assisting them in their activities of daily living that they are unable to do for themselves. i've have learnt to deal with all differant personalities of people, care for families in loss of their own, manage my time efficiently throughout the day in terms of caring for each resident in differant manners etc. This job is physically demanding including moving and rolling residents, pushing residents in wheelchairs, using lifts inorder to transfer residents as well as my own body strength. Perform duties such as changing non sterile dressings, collecting specimens etc. My job is very enjoyable in the ways of making the residents smile and laugh and give them the poroper care they deserve is the most rewarding part to give as most of the residents i care for are at the end of their lives, making each moment as enjoyable as possible. The environment that I work in is very team orientated, also having to have good communication skills to pass on from co worker to co worker about certain things about residents that I or my co workers see throughout the day.

When I got the job back in 2016, I was ecstatic to begin what I thought would be the job I retired from. I was wrong.

Very quickly, I began noticing no backup or help from the managers. More work was piled on top of all the workers and it was to the point where people would leave at the end of their shift and they would be emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausted. Yet, management would still crack the whip to try and push people harder.

Workers feel so unappreciated because, whenever something is reported, that worker is told that there is no issue, management won't follow-up with anything reported, or they just won't care. Don't expect your holidays to get approved because they never do even if management promises it will.

Families are allowed to treat the workers awful there and when the workers defend themselves, they're in the wrong. I cannot say enough about how toxic that place is, sadly. I really wish that this was a positive review I am writing but unfortunately it is not. When my parents end up needing Long Term Care, I can assure you Hogarth will be in the bottom.

If you respect yourself and wish to be treated appropriately for the work you put in and expect your perks as a worker, Hogarth is not the place to apply.

I honestly love the healthcare field. I love interacting with patients and I feel a sense of purpose when providing care. However a large amount of fellow staff make it hard. As an employee, especially PSW, you are constantly talked down to. The management and staffing department pretends you are friends when other people are around but during 1 on 1 conversations they are all condescending and rude. I have genuinely never heard something good to be said about the upper level staff.  I have heard former staff say that they filed a complaint against management and was in turn “coincidentally” fired for a separate reason, which makes current staff afraid to speak up for themselves. They also take advantage of international students and new immigrants, guilt tripping them into working overtime hours they don’t have the time to do. Many of them are shy and have a slight language barrier and are constantly talked down to. Overall, as a temporary job this is ok. The work itself is rewarding and many of the residents are sweethearts, but god forbid you have to interact with any of the management.

Under staffed.. Poor management support..
Nobody cares... feel for the residents 
Managment and staffing will force you to work on your days off and they'll threaten you to come and work.. not organized.. most of all staffs get work injury due to lack of safety measures. You could see Ministry of health 2/3times/week due to lack of care and complaints from residents and family.
No peer support.. most of all staffs leave HRM after orientation due to rough work culture. I dont see any work ethics or support from the management. No happy faces unless the residents.

Staff to patient ratios are appalling, making it impossible to provide adequate care for the residents - I felt like I was herding cattle, not caring for real human people. The media is not kidding when they say staff have 5-8 minutes to provide full care. And managements response to these complaints is indifference or to shaft responsibility.

Management does not back up their staff and they constantly increase the workload and their expectations.  They do not care about their staff and will throw anyone under the bus to save their reputation.  They only think of the residents as paychecks and nothing more.

Everyone is very friendly and helpful. There could be more work involved with training, I find a lot of people are all over the place and have different views on how things are done. If everyone was on the same page it would run a lot smoother. Other than that, a great place to work. Positive atmosphere.

The hardest part of the job is getting to know your coworkers. The most enjoyable part is seeing the smile of a residents face when you care for them.  Every day is a challenge to keep faith in caring for the residents. 

The only two nice things I can say are the benefits and money are ok.  The managers have no clue.  Your always short, rarely get your breaks and the back talking is terrible.  Even the managers do it.  There is no respect for nurses or psw’s.  

Not very supportive of staff. No upper management willing to get there hands dirty when short staffing levels persist to be a problem. Not a very pleasant environment, toxic and lots of harassment.
