Site leader is great guy but assistant site lead /safety guy is the most condescending, fear mongering , disrespectful, unprofessional person in a management position I have ever encountered. When he’s in a bad mood it reflects on how he treats everyone at the hardisty Alberta site . For an assistant site lead/safety guy he is the most unapproachable person , which is not good in a position such as his . He is a Human Resources disaster. In hardisty its super busy transloading site and we often rush ourselves through our breaks to relieve our coworkers, and if we don’t have time to wash our dishes or cutlery, the above mentioned assistant site lead /safety guy goes as far as throwing our stuff in the garbage , cutlery, food containers, glass plates cups and everything. His military mentality/power tripping personality makes you feel completely useless and undervalued and erodes self-esteem and company moral . Any kind of safety issue or suggestion are not tolerated and he talks down to you like your a child when approached . The other assistant site lead is completely opposite, and a very nice guy , easy to talk to and understanding/approachable . Just gets overshadowed by the other site lead . On the plus side the lower level guys are great to be around , lots of people from different walks of life , with different job skills that bring a lot of value to our crews . Enjoy the laughs in the lunch room (when above mentioned assistant site lead /safety guy is not around of course )

I started working for Railserve on their sales & marketing team over a year ago and so far I have enjoyed my role and have found it to be quite dynamic. 

When I first started I did notice that there were quite a few changes in leadership/management that had occurred in the past few years and also a lot of new processes/programs that had been implemented which overall have been positive for the company. There are some great people who I have had the opportunity to get to know while being at Railserve and it has been the highlight of my employment. I think one of the best things about working at Railserve is the positive work environment where everyone is made to feel safe and respected. I also enjoy working with the Canadian team as management works really hard to promote collaboration between operations, safety, etc. 

I do find there to be a bit of a disconnect sometimes when it comes to communication between management and employees, but that is the growing pains of coming from a larger company owned by an $8B parent company (Marmon) and I think Railserve is working towards becoming more progressive and forward thinking to change that. 

Upper level and corporate managers are so grossly incompetent and out for themselves at the expense of the employees. They are so out of touch with the everyday operations, their clients and most importantly the employees who are responsible for them having a position that it's sickening to see the dog and pony show they put on day in and day out. 
The employees are fantastic and make the daily grind enjoyable. Local managers are personable, fair and work with the employees to a common goal of service excellence. They are full of integrity and professionalism but must toe the line and be the corporate yes man or they simply won't be around too long.
Pay is not competitive within the industry for the boots on the ground but I can imagine these Regional and GM's and corporate managers are doing well, another incompetency and failure of business ethics and leadership. 
They talk a good talk but fail hard on management and leadership.

The site supervisor was a bit fickle and you never know what you'll get from one day to the next, sometimes he was great often he was moody for no particular reason. He liked to pit the yard guys against each other and would often try to get them to implicate each other when issues arised. Most of the yard guys were hard workers and split the workload equally, however there definitely was one who would often try to get out of the hard work required and opt to do the easiest task available. 
HR was the neighbour of the site supervisor so that tells you where her allegiance lied. 
Otherwise it was a job with very little way of upward progression, unless you were to move to a new site. There are plenty of stumps in the ground who aren't moving. 
Pay was decent, benefits were alright. 

This was the spot the culture was good the pay was good at this location specifically management had its over managing aspects in the beginning but it kept things running smooth. Wasn’t till the new gm or whatever took over and started shifting “making positive changes” in management speak that everything died, higher ups got pushed out, 15 year employees didn’t get transfer opportunities, unless you brown nosed you got dropped. Railserve was a good company to work for but under current higher up management it’s honestly not the place unless your a yes man or a sheep or doormat. I could write a books worth of truth to the experience but I won’t. I miss the job and the ppl I worked with but management is cold

The company lost a contract and people had been leaving and so the primary company offered employees who stayed until the end 2000$ railserve charged 150$ for the transaction. They nickel and dime everyone until the end keep your hands out of our pockets!!! Long time staff are treated unfairly the regional leaders are horrible. They don’t care about your family only about work way to much paperwork 

Positives are job security they don’t fire unless it’s needed tell them the truth and they will work with you good health packages.

Bad management, Lower wages, Poor advancement structuring, safety is alright depending on the crew. Crew morale among workers is bad and many of the crew leads are very snakey and get away with alot of bs. VERY two faced. 
I always feel a huge lack of leadership, equality and positivity and the turnover rate is terrible. 

With proper management all issues could easily be fixed if someone would take charge, eliminate the bs, and create a place people actually enjoyed working at. Very unfortunate and I don't think ill stay here very long.

Railserve is a good place to work for the most part, but with rising cost of living they need to be willing to pay their employees more if they want to keep them. Overall if you want a good work-life balance it is a good place to work most site are a five on five off schedule, but it is a split shift and you will work days and night on most sites. Management is relatively good and is trying to work on upping wages(at least that’s what they tell us). If you get on the right site it is definitely a good place to work with lots of room for growth into management positions.

Worked for multiple managers at multiple sites, and it was always the same.
Preach safety, then crack out the whips to get the job done. Instead of ensuring a suitable number of employees are employed for the work, a smaller number was kept to justify the slow period in the industrial settings.


I really like the atmosphere,quality training,safety and work of schedule i have a lot of time for my family,working as team,always safety first before start to work,every shift learning specialy for the safety’s for everyone,One of the hardest working at Railserve is the Weather that is the winter,but the company provided all you needed for this season and they give proper procedures and rules.
