Red Apple Stores

The first location I worked at was absolutely amazing. The staff was like a family to me and the regular customers were fantastic and memorable.

It was probably one of the first places I've worked where I was actually looking forward to the work day, and if I was bored on my off day, I would just go in there and hang out.

The Elmira location has some of the most wonderful supportive staff a store could possible have and the hardest thing for me was having to leave them when I had moved.

Thankfully I was transferred from Elmira to Sturgeon Falls. Like the other, this one was absolutely fun to be at, however, it didn't have the same family feel

Located in a french community, I learned that I had a be a little more patient with certain customers who did not speak English. I had also learned what a Status card was and how it was used (as those aren't very common in the Toronto areas).

The staff and coworkers were a lot of fun to be with. As well, the manager was someone who I could open up to about things, which was nice having someone to talk to.

The hardest part was trying to deal with the french customers, as I don't know any, but, thankfully the other staff were there to help.

Whether it was open or close, I had my open and close duties.  In the morning I would check the emails and tasks for the day, as well as the communications.  I would figure what needed to be done and include my co-workers so we all knew what we needed to do for the day, and listen to their suggestions for our game plan.  For our up-selling challenge, we would make goals of what we were to sell for the shift we were on.  I also made sure to schedule their breaks in.  I would do any receiving or returns in the computer system.  I would have payroll and the work schedule in the computer for the boss.  If the day doesn't look to busy I will look into layaways(once or every other week).  After the tasks of the day have been completed I will go straight to my fashion department, sorting ad merchandise and non-ad merchandise.  I will display the ad clothing first and in the front with signage, once this is complete, I will work into my non-ad clothing.  While doing the above, I also did the returns the customers would bring in.  
The best part of working here, is the co-workers, we help each other and have fun.  Going to work was going to my second home.

What is the best part of working at the company?
My interactions with the community. My boss  (now retired)  was fantastic. I enjoyed the staff I worked with as we all shared a great sense of humor. Be prepared to work hard and learn  the basics on retail.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The store itself as it was poorly designed. That has been rectified  and the new layout is great. The tills were old and glitchy at times and required staying late to talk to I.t.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It has changed somewhat since I worked there however there was a nice mix of older staff as well as younger people. If your were kind and helpful to patrons you were rewarded with mutual kindness. There was the usual gossiping that you will find in most places and different fields. Overall a positive experience during my time.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
As a keybolder I would arrive and work at the till  & during quiet times help put out stock. Putting up new displays would be part of the day as well as fronting products throughout the store. The pace was fast and little time for boredom. I often closed out the store at the end of the day and did deposits.

On a typical day my duties included opening or closing the store, providing excellent customer service, preparing cash register floats, sorting and filing daily/weekly/monthly paperwork, preparing and delivering bank deposits, receiving purchase orders and processing vendor returns and store transfers using Microsoft Back Office Application, performing cash register transactions with accuracy, reconciling cash register totals with computer, managing my departments and maintaining planograms, preparing store for inventory, completing and forwarding the necessary year end paperwork.
As the #1 Keyholder associate I worked closely with management and would take care of day to day store operations when my manager was on vacation or sick leave.  I was responsible for reading daily emails and passing tasks along to my co-workers.
The most enjoyable part of my job was meeting and getting to know a lot of different people customers and co-workers included.  The hardest part of my job was when co-workers left town or went to work somewhere else.

You follow a list of duties, you're also have costumer service with that. just try you best to get as much done as you can and you'll be fine.

I've learned a lot more about cash handling, organization, costumer service and just how it is to work an actual company store and to keep track of every that goes on so you know you're on the right track.

Management was pretty good, I admire the amount of work they put in just to keep the store on top shape. Helped me gain a lot more knowledge about working in retail.

Co-workers were pretty great, got a long with good number of them. You make come across ones you don agree with but one you get on the same terms things go a lot smoother and easier for work.

The hardest for me I'd say was, computer work. As a keyholder you had to be able to make orders and scan certain items for vendors. For starting my first time in a company job, they didn't have enough time to show me a whole lot on how do to things other than the basic cash handle till stuff. 

the most enjoyable part I believe was, how well i got along with some of my co-workers and how it helped the day go by.

Started out as a fair job. Typical work day involved serving customers as well as stocking shelves. Learned a lot about multitasking and time management. Co-workers were hit and miss. Some had a lot of negativity towards many of the others, so there were a lot of tense moments and a lot of favouritism. The job got harder as hours were cut by head office and we wouldn't have enough people working at a given time for certain jobs to be able to be finished before the end of the shift. For example, when I started working there would be one person working the cash, one person working on the floor and as a second cashier when needed, and a keyholder. However, when hours were cut, there was only the person at the register and a keyholder, the keyholder would essentially have to do enough work for two people on the floor as well as work as a second cashier. However, even when there were more hours, scheduling was very flexible and forgiving, if you needed a day off on short notice you could get it and they were also very patient with working around any other schedules.

In a typical day as keyholder I would work the afternoon shift, as I would be closing the store.
My duties included cover cash for associate breaks do returns, work freight to sales floor. Receiving freight from our warehouse and other suppliers such as Coke, or Lays Chips, Tobacco products. Review & submit payrolls.
Balance tills and do bank deposits. At Red Apple it was a positive work place culture. We all worked together to make our store a place our customers like to return to. The hardest part of the job for me would have been dealing with difficult customers, and it does happen in any retail setting. The most enjoyable part for me was setting up new displays for current holidays like Christmas or summer displays like bbq, pool  toys ect. Over all I enjoyed my years at Red Apple.

If I opened the store in the morning then I would run the daily reports and take them into the back office and match the reports with the corresponding receipts in the back office. I would count the tills and balance the safe, take the tills out to the store floor and open the store for the day. Do a bank run to deposit the previous day's profit. Maintain store, do returns or exchanges, help customers with any questions or concerns. Overrides, post voids. If I were closing the store then I would clean the store for the following business day, count tills, balance safe, log cash register information, run closing reports and lock up. I learned alot about management. My coworkers were fantastic. The hardest part of my job was when the store closed. I had just started my maternity leave but I was going in frequently. The store closed June 2013. The most enjoyable part of the job was the interaction with the people.

the hardest part of the job was trying to get everything done when you are only one person and some people that wouldn't get along would be brutal due to the very small space everyone had to work with and I loved my job is was easy going everyone did get alone for the most part its just sad that the bargain shop had to close its door before I could return to work

This job opportunity was a great learning experience. I learned so many things about operating the retail store on a direct level. Things such as interacting with customers and being able to solve problems that were in my control, operating the Point of Sale system, pricing and stocking shelves. On a more personal level I learned that you cannot please everyone, but that made the times that you did make someones day that much more enjoyable, to see their face light up when they found the item they were looking for. As for the people I was working with they made the day go by a little faster when you were having a bad day because everyone was like family and all the energy just bounced off one another. I think the hardest part for me was to see the look of disappointment on the customers face when we didn't carry or stopped carrying a certain item.
