The job itself is fulfilling. You learn something new every day, increasing your skill load. You have the chance to meet & work with a lot of great people. The supervisors are lacking, though. Favoritism is rampant, and if you tell a supervisor that you don't want to do something that is not in your job description, they will make it their mission to punish you for daring to refuse them. I loved the job, but I said no to something that I didn't know how to do, and I paid for it. If you are willing to do whatever is asked of you, no matter what, then you will be welcome at this job. If you are not, then prepare for retribution if you refuse something. The union you join when you start working there will not back you on anything, the rep will call your supervisor & report everything that you said. Their probationary period, which is 1040 hours of work, is also questionable.

Older custodians are ignorant and unhelpful, and not skilled at cleaning.  

Lots of drama and infighting because of bad attitudes. Lots of back talking and people putting work on others. 

Some routines were terrible, with older staff pushing more work onto other routines. At one high school, the routine I was covering stretched across the entire school and I could never take breaks (unless I did a quick and terrible job, which I did not like doing). 

May be better now, it's been a few years, but I would never go back. Especially for the low wage. 



I have been busy from the moment I was hired as a substitute Educational Assistant, every school I have been to have been extremely welcoming and helpful when I had questions. They are always happy to have me and always express their appreciation for my help, hardwork, and willingness to take direction when needed. This environment is very receptive to new people, fast-paced, shoot from the hip honesty and super friendly.  

-Working with staff and students
-Testing children and helping them learn to read 
-Scheduling All Educational Assistants  - Finding coverage for students in a timely manor
-Work as a team
-Most enjoyable part is helping/seeing children succeed
-Hardest part is helping a child and knowing there will be minimal growth 

Red Deer public schools are very supportive of their staff and students. One of the leading school boards in the province and not afraid to stand up to government.  Any teaching job though is a life choice that can consume your life if you don't take care of yourself.

RDPSD has the best benefit package and pension program I have ever encountered. Benefits are paid by the employer, and the pension plan is cost-shared. This means that the take-home income is higher %. Benefits include 100% dental and prescription coverage. Massage and chiropractor sessions at $700/year.

I loved working at RDPSD and loved working with teacher and students where I can help and grow students for their future. The technical side of my position was a typical IT day with typical challenges but what was different was finding cost effective ways to resolve concerns as budget was a huge contender.

If you’re in CUPE. Good luck. Low pay. Great benefits. Seniority is the only advancement. Long days on demeaning tasks and poor coworkers attitudes. 
I’d say it’s good work, but slow pace and safety and management are constantly playing catch up. 


Wonderful opportunity to work in various schools, meet new people, learn and grow in personal development. Working as a team was rewarding. Seeing students progress and excitement to learn.

Support staff do not earn a living wage, not unionized. Unable to work enough hours to support a household. Regular budget and funding changes negatively affect job security.
