As an instructor for the Oil and Gas Administration program, I entered the position with missing fundamentals. Through my experience, I continuously educated myself in industry information, and implemented information to be understood by newcomers (students) to the industry; today the program is successfully completed fundamentally, as new information is always being retrieved and a creative mind is needed to implement new techniques to deliver information to students with various learning abilities.

As an instructor I was also required to lecture and assign various activities about Student Success Strategies (goal setting, life balances, etc.); Business Communication Essentials (channels/mediums, formats; planning, writing, completing/proofreading; good news, bad news, persuasive messages, proposals, reports, etc.); Employee and Customer Service skills (basic etiquettes in and out of the office).

The work environment was structured, as classes were scheduled in am/pm shifts. Each instructor was expected to monitor attendance, conflicts, assignments, grades, and to report to the needed administrators. Instructors must have great conflict resolution skills, ability to retain and retrieve information, excellent multitasking skills and be deadline oriented. Communication with everyone is a must.

In this role, the ability to work with multiple personalities is a high requirement. These personalities are found within the personal demographics (age, culture, lifestyle, values, etc.) of each person. 
A strong personality and confidence are two very important qualities needed as an instructor. At this company, the demographics in staff was evident, and is definitely an equal opportunity employer.

Of course with any position, there is going to be moments of stress, finding the right outlet is sometimes a challenge as there have been examples of repercussions to specific actions and then other times that same action is gone untended, This usually depended on who the action was exhibited by and who was involved in the knowledge of the action. Unfortunately, gossip and influence from parties who are chummier with up line staff has been exhibited. 

Other challenges in this position include changes in schedules, student expectations, workload changes, difficult team players, and deadlines. Not all programs are set up consistently, with instructors using the same information for shared common programs. Information needed for shared common programs is not accessible to all staff needed (often stored on a personal drive privately). 

Although this position was full of challenges, it was also plentiful with rewards. Successfully educating and graduating a student, who demonstrated excellent work ethic and perseverance, is the most gratifying sensation. Learning where each of the graduates began from, to where they found employment is also exciting. Other great aspects of the position is the networking that begins and is encouraged. Also, seeing the delight in the faces of each person, who walks into the establishment, when they finally get the light bulb to brighten towards their goals. 

As a business college, this employer has desires to share information to its customers. Continuous learning from staff is required along with educating new minds. I learned many new strategies and disciplines of myself and am grateful to have been a part of the team of educators/administrators with this company. I am also pleased to say that this employer has been a great place to allow my true personality to shine. 

I enjoy being involved in the community and this employer encourages its members to be involved. From gathering donations for the Calgary Food Bank (staff vs. students), to fundraising for specific charities. Each month, there is a fun activity to reward the customers (students); this could be as simple as a potluck (with ingredients of dish for allergy purposes) to Hallmark events (Valentines, Easter, etc.) to student awards (perfect attendance, perseverance, etc.).

It was a great pleasure to be employed with this company. I found pride in my position with the success of education, confidence, and continuous learning.

What is the best part of working at the company?
This company will take advantage of employees any way they can. They would get us to work overtime and tell us we had to keep the overtime hours separately and just take time off instead. They got caught doing that and had to stop and screwed several instructors out of hours they worked overtime to help the company. They will pay you less than your contract states and make you fight for what you are entitled too. Theybwill terminate you for standing up for yourself. If you don't kiss the directors butt then you are not going to last long. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Too much overtime that they will not pay you for. Students who have little respect for instructors and the administration will always side with a student. They complain the work is too hard so then I am asked to "dumb down" the course for them so they can pass. Students rarely fail at these colleges but then the quality of their training is poor. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Most of the people are great to work with. The culture used to be very good but it has slipped the last few years.

I recently started working at Reeves College as an Administrative Assistant. Due to recent turn over I was lucky to be able to start as the Career Services Coordinator which has helped me grow as an employee as well as a person. The director is always willing to help me improve and learn new skills that I can carry with me for life. As we are a smaller campus, we are very close knit and are always willing to help each other. The instructors are very knowledgeable in their perspective fields and are always willing to help their students. As an entry level position, I feel I am gaining great experience and look forward to working with Reeve for years to come. We are always planning something each month for the students like National Licorice Day and National Iced Tea Day. Always something fun in store at Reeves College.

Awful company to work for. Reeves is a sister school of CDI and VCAD. I don't recommend any of them. Out of Calgary offices, management is absolutely awful. They expect you to enroll 2 students MINIMUM/week and if you don't enroll them to start the same month, you'll get in trouble or fired. Pathetic that a college wants you to force people to go to school when the tuition is insanely overpriced. They will make your yearly salary sound amazing. Keep in mind, you don't get paid if you need a pay off and you don't get paid overtime. On Mondays, you are expected to stay an hour or 2 late, but they won't pay you for that. They love to fire people and so don't expect any sort of job security. 

I definitely would not recommend teachers work here. It was the most chaotic and disorganized environment I have ever been in. I honestly feel sorry for the students that are paying for this school. 

Working full time for part time pay with so many administrative tasks was not my cup of tea. Great people for the most part, although huge turnover in the office really impacted students and instructors. The materials and assessments provided to instructors were not suited to working class, ELLs with many disabilities and disorders. The Learner Management System was slow, error prone, and awkward.  

I have worked at Reeves College since 2013. I instruct Medical Office Administration, Microsoft Learning Center,  Oil & Gas Administration and Business Digital Marketing programs. I enjoy my job immensely. The staff is great to work with and is very supportive. It is a team environment. Instructing adult education is rewarding and I am always up for a challenge! Students have been great and it is exciting to see them pursue their careers and secure their futures! I am thankful for this opportunity!!

The management of this company is one of the worst, in my opinion, for such a large corporation. Upper management only cares about how many students are pushed to sign up, regardless of what their success may be to graduate and go on to gain employment. Tuition fees are outrageous. If you want quality education, look elsewhere. If you work here, expect to work long hours, with no overtime, and be ready to train yourself. 

I was excited about this job because I would be able to make 38,000 a year. In reality, they were paying 36,000 a year on top of making you pay for benefits. The director of the campus seems very under qualified and unprofessional. Extremely slow work as there are barely any students who take courses at the school. Most students are online. Also students will get upset knowing that their courses are not accredited. 

This is an awesome place to work, my only and single issue is that I was working under contract when there were sufficient students interested in learning graphic design. When the student number dried up, I had no further work.

In any case, the people I worked with, the culture and the environment were top-notch and I would work there again in a heartbeat.
