Remedy Cafe

Poor management, lack of direction & consistency, lack of professionalism, passive aggressiveness, lack of communication, no respect for hard working employees who have dedicated years this job, no respect for personal time off/vacation days, no benefits or opportunities for career growth, no reassurance for protection (there were male and female employees getting threatened and harassed on the job and the owners did nothing about it). I have so much to say about this place but all you need to know that matters is that the owners do not care about you, at all. Even if they promote you to manager, that just means more dirt on the rag…. YOU’RE the rag, if you hadn’t guessed already. About 6 of us all left around the same time for the same reasons, and we all worked there for more than a year so we saw our fair share of craziness. The only thing that made this job worth it was my coworkers, the regulars, the fact we got to pick our own playlist, the free coffee, and occasionally getting to chill on a monday morning shift because those days were extremely slow. This isn’t the worst first job, I’ve had worse, but it’s definitely up there. Just keep in mind that this job is not the end goal for you and that there are places that will treat you better. You deserve better!!!

Remedy is like a typical cafe in most ways, with the exception of an overbearing, micromanaging, and frankly, abusive owner. Coworkers and myself would all feel his seemingly random wrath over silly things, at points literally getting yelled at over spilled milk. Remedy could be a very chill, laid-back job if it were not for the ownership. Coworkers were almost always hardworking, easy to get along with people, but there was a high turnover rate due to how the owner treated them, which wasn't really surprising. It inspired a feeling of hopelessness in that nothing one ever did was right, and nothing one ever could try differently was right. Definitely a very frustrating job to try and do, especially in the face of literally being called stupid many times despite being a near-model employee. (An opinion agreed on by all other staff/ lower management than the owner.)

Working at Remedy is a stressful mess. They guilt trip you into coming in, they fire people out of nowhere, and they pay badly. They take a larger portion of your tips as well. They have really strange expectations for a minimum wage job, and they don’t do their due diligence as owners to keep their cafes in good shape. It basically lays on your shoulders as a barista to make the cafe not look as run down as it is. It’s upsetting as Remedy used to be a great Edmonton business. However, as time goes by the quality gets poorer as the want to invest money in the company grows less and less. The other employees were great for the most part. Although favouritism is rampant and some employees feel they can say or do whatever they want. 

In a day at work I do what's expected of me. I don't get paid enough to go above and beyond and there are no benefits. You'll only get fired if you REALLY slack off and honestly there's not a ton of work required if you're a regular barista anyways so you have to be doing a serious amount of nothing to get fired. I like most of my coworkers, I don't know the owners that well, I never really know what's going on but whatever. I have no strong opinion of the management one way or the other. It's a fine job that'll sort of pay the bills if you work 5-6 days out of the week.

The job itself is well manageable if a little hectic. Only compliant is the unpredictability of shifts. They could change it at 11 at night without your knowledge and you are still expected to go in the next day(if that's what they changed it to). 

A typical day at work is busy from the start to end of your shift. You are expected to be quick and perhaps that is the hardest part. Learning how to be quick without burning yourself.

If you are an employee with good attendance and do the job to the best of your ability, if you have family emergencies, you will be accommodated. It isn't the best pay, but at least if you have some kind of unexpected family emergency in your life (and you've been otherwise exemplary) they will stick their neck out and get your shifts covered. More than I can say for most retail or fast food companies.

Really enjoy going into work and being able to have my colleagues as friends. Everyone is so easy to get along with and everyone works so well together as a team. The fast pace environment and friendly faces of regular customers makes my day go by in a breeze! I feel very lucky to be able to be apart of such a great team and serve so many great people.

This is an ok job if you're desperate for a temporary job. I had two interactions with the owners and both experiences were unprofessional and unpleasant. Most of my co-workers were nice people. There is no job security. Owners offend staff on a regular basis and fire them with no warning or reason. 

Employees get shafted on the regular, Remedy ownership is quick to blame staff when there are any issues. Very little support given to the actual running of the cafes. The individual managers and staff are excellent and doing their best, but there's only so much they can do. Minimum wage, but tips are decent depending on location. However, good luck getting a raise.

If you want don’t a verbally abuse owner that screams at you in front of customers then this isn’t the place for you. Very disorganized management and bad pay with no raises if they move you up to a shift. Staff is hit and miss as everywhere but I’ve never worked some where with so much drama. I’d avoid working here if possible !
