Richmond Night Market

This is a very busy job. The store opens at 5pm and i will need to start preparing at 2pm and get everything set up myself. I have to bring ice, tube, cups, and all the required material to produce product from storage to the night market. I have learnt much from this job, the most impressive thing i learnt is operation model of the store and system of the night market. All the stores are similar but it still required many detail fix up in order to run such big business.  There was only one manager, and self management was really important since we made over 500 cups of drinks per day. The hardest part of the job is that we sometimes need to deal with customers that were in emotions, and we still need to treat them as friendly as we can to solve their problems. It was a pretty fun job which we got to make friends with the customers, and all the bosses from other stores, and we can trade our merchandise for same values and share what we think is good.

Day to day routine doesn't change to much.

During open hours, all employees have their set task at hand. It doesn't change unless and emergency happens, which is often doesn't.

During closed hours, mainly before opening, you're task with simple setup then patrolling for garbage.
If there was a task needed to be done, it would usually require a group of people. Heavy lifting is most of it. 
Work conditions are fine, but safety seems to be low on priority. If it seems safe, than it's safe.

Overall, if I were to recommend someone to work here, I would tell them to get assigned to hours while the market is open.
Minimum wage simply isn't worth all the extra work that has to be done before opening.

My first day I was told I was going to be given a walkie talkie, but as weeks went by I never got an actual one, instead I was using an old one which was very hard to hear out of.  My manager also got frustrated at me for not responding to me on the walkie talkie when all I could hear was static. I wasn't told about how the paychecks work and the time cards, after 2 weeks I asked my manager on how it works but he delayed it to the point where my first paycheck was skipped and I got it with my next paycheck 2 weeks later. I also only had 1-2 shifts a week, which was not enough for me. Overall, very poor management and unorganized work environment. All I did was just sweep the ground for hours.

Typically you don't work more than 3 times a week, working on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You won't work more than 8 hours a day either having the long shift which is the 8 hour shift and a shorter shift which is about 4 hours. Management was quite good and all your tasks were straight forward and simple. The coworkers are mostly young people and relatable and are fun to work around. However, the working conditions are mostly clean but there are times when it was unsanitary and filthy. If you get sick quite easily this is not the job for you. The most enjoyable

Initially, I applied here thinking that I would enjoy the job, as it is not very demanding. However, the management is lacking, and a few incidents created a horrible experience for me personally. The staff did not deal with those incidents effectively and they made me feel like the "bad apple" - it felt really terrible.  It is evident that management does not care about personal growth and well-being, and would rather push their sales as much as they could. Brief interview, 1 hr long training and finicky schedules, bad ethics and unprofessional management makes the Night Market not a great place for a first job, nor a contractual part-time. 

First, management is extremely aggressive and try to push sales no matter what. As stated by the other reviewer, you don't get breaks. Employers will NOT check on you. They simply don't care, and don't give sufficient training for the skills you need (eg. cash handling). Your role is to find the area with the highest traffic to try and persuade visitors to buy a ticket for hours, until your shift ends. I strongly advise to consider other jobs. You will likely be angry with this job.

The interview process was basically just if you can work the days, you're hired. The job isn't that bad but it's definitely not somewhere you'd want to work for more than a couple of months. You're standing on your feet for the entire shift. and The managers are nice however I've seen and heard the owner be extremely mean to their managers. I mean if you can't find a job its not a horrible place to work, but to the management - stop bullying your high school employees. And give them bathroom breaks. 

Management is very incompetent, often calls staff to work when nothing is set up and finalized yet. Tells workers not to wear jackets during a cold night. Expects too much out of high school students with no work experience. Bosses often biased and misjudges. Only pro is the pay given compared to the amount of work you do on most days. Would not recommend.

Managers constantly make you feel like you are doing something wrong. Although it is a good job to start with, it gets stressful and tiring. I originally imagined to get better at the job so the people above me will not scrutinize me, but that’s not the case as it still constantly happened. I would not recommend this job if you’re planning to working for the long term unless you’re hired as a manager role or something.

As known, Richmond Night Market is a very popular place, it attracts people all over Vancouver, which on the one hand, it means there is a high demand of jobs, on the other hand, it means a relative stressful work environment. But at the same time, it gives worker a sense of job culture, which is a good way of viewing food industry.
