My experience working for RB is that the company is not known for treating their employees well. Whether you’re a sales associate or have a full-time management position, expect to be overworked and underpaid, especially during auction times. It's all done under the guise of that we need to make everything happen for the auction.

Further, the high level of stress at auctions causes management to behave in an erratic manner. For example, if you want to see what it’s like when customer service employees are reprimanded in front of customers, all you need to do is go to an auction... The systems and processes on the back end (technology) are archaic at best and do not provide the ability for staff to get their jobs done in an efficient manner.

At the head office there were people were getting fired for personal reasons all the time, there was no trust, and I was questioned about any move I made.

For those in management, there is no work/life balance. Management is required to work an average of 50+ hours per week. There were too many expectations and not enough time for employees to complete the set tasks. Employees lived in fear of being fired as that's what they did when they no longer could get what they wanted out of you.

I would recommend this as a place to work unless you have no life and want to work for little pay. You can do the same thing as a lower position for another company with less hours and more pay. You will get burnt out - this seems to be the culture around this company.

Stressful work environment, pressure from management to complete task in a short window which leads to 12 or 15 hour days which you won’t be paid overtime for. They enjoy giving a good lip service for work life balance when your interviewing and say and do the complete opposite when you start the role, supervisors and managers get extensive toxic pressure from the direct bosses to hit targets which are usually vp’s and directors . Supervisors get extremely frustrated and agitated with employees if task aren’t complete or if mistakes happen and they don’t know how do handle situations respectfully which leads to cussing and rude remarks about others in a “professional” environment. Only a small percentage of people know what they’re doing everyone else just guesses. Training is virtually non existent you get shown something once and be expected to know it inside and out. The pay is below market and doesn’t account for inflation. Raises happen but it’s really only once a year and you’ll be lucky to get a 3% increase in salary. Not everyone there is toxic or bad let me say that some people are genuinely nice caring and great individuals outside of the workplace vutcbasically what I’m trying to say is just avoid working here if you like having a good and healthy work life balance. There are so many companies out there who value employees and treat them so. 

I have worked here for we will say awhile(doesn’t matter because when you get full time status your position resets and they only care about longevity when you become full time). One staff member wasn’t invited on the 10 years cruise when they had worked here for 15 years-it’s weird. When I started here I loved it. The people. The atmosphere. The constant hustle. The teamwork, the sense of completion at the end of a successful auction, Literally everything. As an inspector the days are often long leading up to an auction…12-14 hrs (used to be longer) and 7 days a week. We work outdoors in all weather conditions from -50 to +40 as we live in Canada. The last few years here have been extremely challenging and difficult. No one is smiling. The morale has gone downhill. We are pitted against each other due to an implementation of an inspection grading system and people are more than willing to do anything to shift blame for even the smallest mistake. Every  part of yard operations is understaffed due to cutbacks and hiring freezes. We work for the same wage but take on more responsibility. Everyone is burning out and on short fuses. Don’t get me wrong, still love my position but find the opportunity for growth is non existent. Bring back the old Ritchies. Tired of the drama and cutthroat culture that has been created. 

Upon first starting with this company a mere 5 years ago it was a great place to work...sadly it went downhill VERY fast.  Between a new CEO and management receiving bonuses they will cut back any place they can including spending freezes on day to day items needed to do your job.

In addition, the last year of full time employment with the company I was away from home working for a total of 7 months!  As the area of the company I worked for does farm sales, from before I started I knew there was travel involved in April, June and October however as the company grew and more sales were added it required more and more travel.  As a single, childless woman it was pretty much just assumed I would be the one to travel for extended periods since I had no one needing my attention at home.  When brought up to management that in a two month span I slept in my own bed 6 nights the response was to ask if that was work related or if I was gone away for fun - absolutely ignorant!

The company is far from the family owned, customer driven, great place to work that it used to be - now it's all about corporate takeovers and money over people - both the customers and employees.

A typical day you hit the road running. As they say "you work hard and play hard." However, you can only do it for so long on the salary they pay, and the strain on your family life and your own mental and physical health. If your family has plans for vacation and your auction site changes the auction date to be at the time of your vacation too bad for your family vacation. You must be flexible, very flexible. Management is not consistent. They change frequently, and with each change brings a whole set of new priorities and rules. Co-workers are wonderful. Just like a family you may not always get along but they are still family. The hardest part of the job is not being appreciated. The most enjoyable part of the job is the adrenaline rush of auction day (a job well done by all) and the family like atmosphere, but be careful you are not bulletproof. When they no longer need you or believe you get in their way they will let you go, family or not.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I was able to do what I enjoyed and gained valuable knowledge and work experience. Free food, Newer equipment to operate. Most staff were pretty good. Management not so much. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Nearing auction dates means longer hours and last minute rushing. Under paid for liability involving  daily loader operating duties. Yard staff are treated better than operators. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Mostly outdoor. Lots of moving of  machinery. Company culture is fairly family oriented when I worked there. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Meet and great customers as they pull into the yard in the loader. Unload trucks, retrieve customers items and load trailers and trucks, shuttle customers around the yard to view items,answer questions, give directions, wash and detail equipment, spray weeds.

SEVERE nepotism at specific site. People are hired and fired due to who they are related to or who they are friends with NOT capabilities. NO accountability.  Advancement only if "liked" by management not by ability or hard work.

Specific site ignores policies and procedures making for unsafe work environment (yard & office). Incidents of injury at site were avoidable but there was NO management or direction in the yard from ROM or other managers.  Faults ALWAYS directed at victims of incidents rather than management taking responsibility.  

Extremely immature and unprofessional behavior by managers. (Name calling and swearing).

Individuals asked to work 21+ days in a row with long hours while managers take time off during important pre and post auction times. 

ROM does not believe in giving full credit to workers (scale of 1-5) verbalizes "will NEVER give anyone a 5/5".

The workplace was great for gaining experience working with so many types of equipment associated with farming and Industrial. The few F/T staff where good to work with and helped with making things productive on site. The turn around of part timers was a little disturbing since you couldn't count on them in many instances. Some of this was due to being productive and understanding their role and the other was Management being quick to fire you on the spot. To many constant threats where also presented at meetings that where meant for knowledge and information about safety, work and events... The job can be very demanding especially weeks before and after a action so be prepared for extremes in working hours...

I started working for this company due too the down turn in oil and gas. Upon being hired I was told there was room for advancement. Unfortunately these positions are reserved for friends of management. They promised a raise repeatedly but they were too busy as they put it to get me in for a meeting. The management team steals yard staff ideas as there own. They make poor decisions constantly, to get out of it they blame staff or just tell staff the opposite of what they said the meeting before any questioning we'll get you escorted to sparrow drive. This is they're common threat. I could go on but feel you get the idea. I have worked for leaders in my life, people with life experience, that make thought out decisions and that stand by there employees! These children at RBA possess none of these skills or traits. Simply put this is a clown college stay away.

Blows my mind how little they care about you as an employee and even less so the customers themselves. People will be openly abusing the systems, management knows about it but they’re praised in meetings. No department wants to work with the other so it’s a lot of passive aggressive back and forth to have anything accomplished. It’s been the only company operating in this space for a long time so they had a lot of growth. Now though, it’s become extremely competitive and they’re scrambling to fix their issues around this brand they have with customers. Word of mouth is spreading around to business owners and they’re sick of it which makes it a hard position if you want to actually help your customers.
