Riverside School Board

This was an elected position. I had to run a campaign door to door to get elected. I sat on the board of directors with 18 other elected individuals. There was alot of nightly meetings, reviewing budgets for almost 11000 students on the south shore of Montreal. covering ares from Sorel-Tracy to as far as Saint Remi. I sat on Human Resource, Transportation and Planning committees. Some of the things I appreciated most was the intellectual intricacies of the job. This was politics in a true raw form. Everyone had their constituents which they were elected to represent. I believe that every individual believed they were acting in the best interset of the board, however that meant compromise which was no easy task. We were a divided counsel. There were many tie votes there was alot of people who would sell there souls to get what they believed to be right. This experience taught me that I would have to learn to work with some very difficult individulas who might never have the same views as me, and no matter how much I would try to convince them I would never be able to get them to change their minds. Right or wrong. But at the end of the day no matter how turbullent the meetings were I would shake their hands afterwards or go for a coffee. To leave what happened at the table, at the table and move on.

My job itself is rewarding, but support from bosses and the school board itself is poor to none. Very little can happen without hoards of red tape. There is no incentive to work harder or better as the worst employee moves up just as much and the best one. HR is continuously lying to you about the requirements for qualifications so they do not have to pay you more. There are a max set of hours that you receive every year which are just under the amount necessary to get a permanent position. HR makes up their own rules and consider 25 hours a week to be a full time job, and it is near impossible to get more, yet you are expected to be present at work for an 8 hour day. Resources are constantly being taken away and you are expected to always do more with less. Very disappointing. There are however some amazing employees and a wonderful unity in that sense but at some point that is not enough, especially if you can barely put food on the table with your “full time 25 hour position”. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
I enjoyed working in education as a Substitute Teacher for all grade levels. Each day was exciting and the work with students very rewarding.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I can't honestly say that there was anything stressful about the work, or the Teachers and Students I worked with. There was great teamwork and support from the regular classroom Teachers I encountered throughout the day. They were very dedicated and approachable.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Students first, and foremost along with a good peer support network. A healthy environment and culture for Students and Staff.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I was never sure what the day would bring, and I was open to all Substitute assignments. It was a great environment and enjoyable to work in. Within a couple of Substitute assignments, I was sought after and never had a day without a call to substitute.

I enjoy working with students and staff, making every minute count.
Besides my regular paid teaching hours (8am to 12, 1pm to 2:30pm) I also did much volunteering as my resume will show. Lunch hours and after school clubs.
I think the greatest thing that I learned was patience. Dealing with situations that arose with patience and kindness made all the difference.  My main job of teaching meant that I was responsible to provide an annual curriculum for all subjects taught, as well as participate on staff council and governing board. The hardest part of this work was saying good-bye to graduation students and retiring colleagues at the the end of each school year. However, ever aspect of my day to day work was very enjoyable and I have very fond memories.

I worked at all levels of RSB including primary and secondary schools plus adult education. I also worked in the Daycare after my regular RSB job was finished for the day. I could write a book on all my experiences at Riverside School Board. Let’s put it this way; if you can’t handle stress and pressure well, then don’t work there. People are amazing though and the teamwork is generally high although some of the schools require better care of their staff at the lower levels. 

The job required a lot of moving around between schools, meetings with students and staff. No day was the same, which I really enjoyed. The job did require some evening and weekend work which was made very clear during the interview. Everyone at the school board was very understanding and amicable. The office space was nice and well equiped. Only thing I would be careful of is that there was a lot of gossip that went around, best to keep out of it. The job also requires patience as nothing would get done quickly due to the amount of people who needed to approve certain projects. No decision could be made independently.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Bullying by administration. Ineffective union that compromises confidentiality and is too close to Board members. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very cliquish groups with ineffective an unqualified supervisors. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy and fairly stressful if admin in school is micromanaging

Other than the typical advantages and disadvantages of working for the public sector (good benefits, lots of red tape), what makes RSB stand out poorly is the lack of support and consistency. Training is minimal, people from HR contradict one another when it comes to requirements for a job, getting work, etc., and it feels like nothing can move forward because you're constantly putting out fires and fixing mistakes from previous employees (who I'm guessing were also not properly trained).

What is the best part of working at the company?
The staff are nice and always ready to help.  There are some problems concerning the students with special needs due to lack of assistance.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Sometimes there is a lack of assistance when students with special needs have behavior problems.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is pretty good. In general, the culture is inclusive, but it varies by school.

Worday is 6h15 am to 5h30 pm.
Make communication with teachers and parents a priority.
Management is based on educationbal response to teachers and helping out parents on home based strategies with their child school work,
Long hours but very rewarding factors to the incredible learning parts done by students and innovative strategies by my yeachers.
