The unit I worked on was very fast-paced and highly acute. From 0700-1900 it was mostly go go go. Bed managers would question and push admissions all the time where I would miss many of my breaks (also, they would overstep their role where they are not supposed to according to our union). Daytime management was never really around. It would be our AHN who would be helping most of the time (as long as you were working with a helpful one). The workplace culture was so toxic. Many of the RNs working there have been working for many years. It felt like high school. Many times I felt intimidated and put down while working there. Many of the nurses would gossip (calling others dumb, stupid, he/she shouldn't be working here) about other co-workers and it created a very negative environment. The hardest part of the job was taking care of your patients safely with very minimal support. It's also tough when I had to work with the inner-city population as it would mentally and physically drain me due to the lack of support given. I also worked bout 2.5 years on the unit and not once was I the "employee of the month". Some had been twice in one year. It was quite upsetting as I felt like I had given so much of my time and contribution to the unit. What I enjoyed most about my job was when I felt rewarded and appreciated for my role. I also enjoyed working more when I worked with the few co-works who were down to earth and we worked amazing as a team.

A typical day at work would be ok. Most days were the same, I would usually start my shift as the cashier but once other workers had to take breaks I would take over their station (cooking).

Management was spread out. Some were in their offices, others were helping out in other kiosks especially during the breakfast, lunch and dinner rushes; and some other managers would be taking care of catering jobs throughout the hospital.

My co workers for the most part were friendly. Alot were younger, and worked at the hospital because the hours were flexible and it made it easier to make money and still go to school. On the other hand, there are a bunch of older co-workers, majority of them just came to Canada so working fast food was an easier job to get then others. This was probably one of the harder parts of my job, the older co-workers liked taking control and telling us the younger workers what to do, and how to do it. I understand they want the job done well and in a timely manner, but it also made things harder at times because I had been at the hospital for years and I've grown acustom to how things worked and how I did my job.

The most enjoyable part of my job is probably making friends throughout the years I had been there. I got along with almost everyone I had worked with.

Provide nursing services, within the defined scope of practice, to patients based on patient assessment and care planning procedures
Perform nursing interventions such as taking vital signs, applying aseptic techniques including sterile dressing, ensuring infection control, monitoring nutritional intake and conducting specimen collection
Administer medication and observe and document therapeutic effects
Monitor established respiratory therapy and intravenous therapy
Monitor patients' progress, evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions and consult with appropriate members of the healthcare team
Provide safety and health education to individuals and their families.

Pleasant working environment.  Report followed with client assignment.  Client care administered either with medication (regular or for pain) comfort measures like changing position.  Assist with morning care. Assist with other staff to ambulate clients around or up in chair.  Dressing changes daily and as needed.  Teach clients of events that may occur during their hospital stay
Hardest part is to see very elderly not tolerating anesthetic very well.  Enjoy watching clients that respond quickly to post op routine and are discharged.

I pre-register/register and Admit patients in the Diagnostic Imaging Department, in the Royal Alexandra Hospital.  I register approximately 800 patients per week.  

I have learned how the Diagnostic Imaging Department works on many different levels.  

The hardest part of my job is when we are short staffed.

The most enjoyable part of my job is helping patients and their families navigate the hospital, and I enjoy helping ease patients worries when they come for testing.

I am moving back to Calgary to be with my family.

What is the best part of working at the company?
It's hospitable , and the staffs are prompt in action and relay every emergency crisis to the doctor on call.

At times some critical decisions must follow due protocol leading to delay in action

Friendly, not biased, flexible and peaceful 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Early days at the start of a week, especially morning duties

The AHS is People friendly with object-oriented. You have too many Managers over Manager which is not productive, AHS spend much needed resources by paying hefty pay to these people, and the staff who does the job and the running the system have no rais for many years. From April they cutting 1 - 2 % of hourly rate from the front line staff and supporting staff, but people who are at the top & these managers who attend just coffee meetings get a rais every year. Is this system ethically correct?

My time at the Royal Alexandra Hospitals was very positive and a great learning experience.  I worked in research and development and supported a PhD and her team of clinical nurse specialists, as they taught and conducted various medical studies. I found the experience not only rewarding but very interesting.

I enjoyed my time working at the OR here. I found it very cliquey in the DTC-OR. Some doctor and anesthesiologist learnt your name but most didnt waste their time. You get to see a wide range of surgeries here and you learn a ton. They give you lots of time to learn in each service and become comfortable. When i left there was a high amount of turnover.

Working on Covid units unvax'd

Very diverse group of people, learned a lot from them and made great friends

Busy with unit cleans and room discharges.
