     It was my first time to work at a camp. I knew nothing and had no expectations at all. I was supposed to work at a main camp but I was pulled out to work in a small camp. It was mandatory to check your temperature before you start working and, your day officially starts with a meeting with the Chef and the rest of your team. 
     On my first three days, I was trained in cleaning washrooms, laundry, and mopping the hallways.  My main job, though, were to wash dishes, cutleries, pots and pans; refill condiments, plastic cutleries, napkins; restock cooler with bottled/ canned drinks;  sanitize dining tables and surfaces like door handles, coolers, coffee maker, etc; mop kitchen and dining floors; make coffee; receive and organize groceries; help the chef if necessary; and serve food.
     Work at the main camp was basically the same with the small camp but more challenging because it was bigger and there were more people to work with and to work for plus I had additional work. I was supposed to work for only a week but was asked to extend for another two weeks with a condition that I train in the housekeeping in the morning and go back to the kitchen in the afternoon. I was grateful to have been extended. They even gave me an hour break to rest and change uniform.
     I enjoyed working alone most of the time just minding my own business. I loved the food especially at the main camp. We worked 12 hours a day which was tiring but when you're at a camp and you have nothing to do and nowhere to go, except your room, it's worth it. I don't know why, but, I enjoyed the travels going to a camp as much as the times I was leaving the camp. 
     The hardest part of the job, for me, were the first days when I felt a bit loss and out of place; and dealing with some co-workers who'd try to bully you or just bother you. 

The work is labour intensive but I learned a lot of time management skills.  Management were hit and miss when it came to assistance and sometimes expectations were unrealistic.   There were times I was doing the work of 4-5 people which is way too much for 1 person.  Other times, it was great.  

Didn't like it when there were sudden transfers to other camps or sudden schedule changes from nights to mornings or vice versa.  Messing up your sleeping schedule is not acceptable.  Hardest part of the job was it could be extremely labour intensive and had to look out for myself at times as I felt I had zero support from anyone, including management at times.  Most enjoyable part was making a few friends and learning a few techniques.  I would recommend a job like this for apprentices or for those who want to get a quick start in life such as getting out of debt and getting back on your feet financially.  I would not recommend staying beyond what you need to stay for.  Be prepared to work long hours and doing very labour intensive work.  You must be willing to sacrifice what you do in everyday life in the city and work in a changeable environment, which is not for everyone.  Overall, camp is not for everyone.

The job was a very early start and a very late finish, often the hours would extend into 16-17 hour days. The environment was very multicultural and very customer service oriented. Many diverse management teams worked as one to make the operaiton a relative success on a day to day basis. This included many different personalities and management styles. The hardest part of the job was finding unity within all of the different management teams and meeting the common goal. The most enjoyable part of the job was the staff i directed, most were very willing to do their best to advance and further themselves. As we were located on a mitlitary base laws were of the utmost importance and these laws ensured everyones safety at all time if they were followed respectfully.
My days included processing charges to hundreds of different accounts, ensuring the billing and man day counts were entirely accurate. I oversaw the staf, gave orientations for camp safety and new worker orientations as per HSSE and OH&S regulations for the oil and gas industry. I served the clients and met their needs and communications in a prompt courteous manner.
Produced a training manual for the postition I worked, accommodated reservations, processed daily expense reports. Provided safety services and transported injured or ill staff to the medics.

This company was one of the worst I ever worked for.
They are cheap, don't care about their staff, unless you know someone there, and have alot of unprofessional chefs and some cooks too, and their camp managers are unprofessional.
I got off the bus once at one of their big camps up at Cenovus and the Royal Camp Manager, said "welcome back suckers", before we even got off the bus. 
How's that for a positive attitude from management.
And the benefits are not very good,  wait til you try and claim something. And have a real good look at that dental plan before you head to the dentist, it doesn't cover what most basic plans do.
And thier placement guy is not with it at all.

They don't have good groceries either, unless your at a Cenovus site and then its a little better, and the money.
I would bypass this company unless your desparate, and don't even bother with the GP division, its run even worse.
They break alot of health and safety stuff and alot of their kitchens are not clean.

I loved working for this company; most of my work was out of Grande Prairie office, and the people are great, from the office staff to the truck drivers and then some.  They have a good sense of humour, they put the safety of the staff and clients first, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the food.  Like all remote areas, we have to inspect the food when it arrives after a long trip and they are very strict about good food handling services. If we have a problem with other staff or a client we contact them and they take action immediately.  They are a great company and I worked for them for 10 years and have no complaints,  Sometimes the drive to camp is long but it gives us time to think and read or just talk to the other staff.  I learned alot from Royal Camp Services, from camp life in a remote area, living and working with/ and getting along with so many different personalities and a lot more.  I would recommend Royal Camp to anyone.

From sending me to the courses I needed, everyone always friendly and helpful, rewarding good work, giving me a Company vehicle, and providing help of any kind if I asked for it, Royal was by far the best Company I have worked for in the Patch.                                     
On a typical day, I would visit one and sometimes two Camps, sit and have a meeting with the Staff to make sure they were all getting along well together and that they didn't needing anything to make their jobs better. We would have a short Safety Meeting, then I woild proceed to the Rig and have a meeting with either the Consultant or the Rig Manager, making sure that they were satisfied with the Service and Accomodation that we were providing for them. I would normally stay in Camp to see what the meal was like for myself.

In a typical day I would send several reports to head office and the main company we cater to. Reports that included meal and room charges, numbers in camp, food that was prepared, our daily safety reports, FLHAs, HID's. I would put in requests for staff (ie: hotels, food, cigarettes, material, food, equipment, maintenance services) I deal with commissary, cash drops, month end inventory, weekly food and supplies orders, chemical, dispensing station, time sheets, operations orders, monthly staff scheduling. I also help housekeeping with mopping, emptying garbages, stripping rooms. I help maintenance with shoveling of snow. The kitchen I help with stocking of dining room, wiping down tables, mopping of floors and putting away dishes. I love to help my staff in any way possible that may make their day a little bit easier. I am a hands on manager and pride my ability to run a successful team.

I was hired on site did exams and safety exam on site and was ready to go out to camp the same day..I worked kitchen making sandwiches and food items for lunches for about 450 workers.. did 12 hour shifts didn't stop much as duties on night shift kept me busy.. worked with great team everyone helped each other with duties to be done before 5 am served breakfast and performed light breakfast duties then did clean up and went to safety meeting when done at 9am and gave input on any changes or incident reports.. it was a great experience to work in a camp setting..the food and housekeeping services were incredible.. it was my first time in a camp setting..and I would love to work in a camp setting again..hourly wage should be higher for the amount of duties required..

Typical day at work was 12 hours plus, but was rewarding work with numerous accolades from clients. I learned working for a smaller company it generally better for most people involved. I was a manager and management was good at the firm, although often the Camp Manager had to design and administer his or her own site specific standard operating procedures. My co-workers were awesome, I miss them and even as their boss communication was open and always appreciated. Hardest part of the job was changing expectations of the Safety Advisors of the Prime Contractors involved. These advisors would change every 3 months at times...
The most enjoyable part of the job was the participation with a strong team of management and employees running a seamless operation.

Cenovus camps were, in my opinion,  well managed and employees treated with respect and dignity by field supervisors.  Overall, I enjoyed the experience of working in a Cenovus camp., Nothwithstanding, the usual small cliques and juvenile politics of a few  colleagues, most people were friendly, open minded and enjoyable to work with.  

Office management and HR were, in my experience, very unapproachable, hypocritical, closed minded and biased in resolving conflict when situations did arise.  I strongly suggest not depending on office  management or H/R to support you. 

Thus, working in camp, in my opinion can be a great experience, even though the hours are long. I strongly suggest however, working for a Camp Catering Company where management and H/R treat their employees with dignity and respect.
