Royal Canadian Legion

The Royal Canadian legion was my most favourite place to work because of the people and the flexibility of my position. I helped in all areas of the legion from maintenance to server to executive office assistant. The manager was great for allowing staff to take on and learn as much as they wanted or as little, the time I spent there was better then any college coarse. 
The older veterans taught me dry humor and how to problem solve and some taught me to find my inner calm and patience. 
Serving elderly customers can be challenging and is not for the sensitive soft spoken people. I found as an employee I was accepted a lot more then as I saw new coming non-members being sometimes aggressive in conversation about any legion rule like no hats, or ripped clothing. Expecting that because they are in the legion they should automatically know these rules which often made recruiting new members difficult.
I loved the legion social events and sporting events, like darts, cribbage, and karaoke nights. I often also enjoyed ring apart of volunteers for poppy donation campaigns leading up to Remembrance Day, which is the biggest event at the legion. Serving or bartending that day is like the year bonus day tips are amazing, entertainment is usually awesome and generally just a busy filled day.
When mininmum wage increased to fifteen and my position being second to only the executive board committee was told my wage would not increase at 16/hr I knew I had to move on. 
I was managing the legion, serving, bartending, coordinating events, cooking, hall rentals, catering server, maintenance/janitorial services. All for what now was only a $1 more then serving staff who would also make additional amounts based on tips they could receive. 
So in the end of my time there I felt under appreciated and not seen as the asset I believe I was, I can confidently say if you keep tight boundaries and able to say no and stick to it making less May not feel as bad of a deal as it did to me. 
Also looking back now I do understand that legions only have so much money to work with when it comes paying for employee’s to work. I still miss working there, and think it’s a great place.

Being in Muskoka and making min hours and min tips due to slow sales it’s been hard to make ends meet. I love the people I work with and the customers. Unfortunately hard to put new ideas forward to make new biz due to Legion rules in Ontario. To much red tape and time to get anything done. It’s a problem Canada wide. Legions are dying across country...need new innovation. Bring in younger members. Legions were backbone of country and support of military. There has not been war in this age as prior and those prior are getting older that they do not attend anymore. I look at making a legion a community reaching out with the same things we used to have like meat draws/ bingo/ games etc. Township bylaws are killing the community legions once had. Most barely making  ends meet so many closing...I think government should step in with assistance on a legion level not a Legion head office level... I think legions should have exemptions for many thing due to sense of community and a life line for so many that have served and those whom have not. It’s a community and being new to area was a life line for me,. 
I love my time there and hope if after covid get to return. But on same note need to make a living. Hoping to be asked back but believe min wage should be upgraded.

I learned at this job to work independantly. A majority of the time I was the only staff in the building. That has taught me to figure out the ropes on my own.

The idea behind the Royal Canadian Legion is absolutly amazing. Taking care of those who served to protect and fight for our freedom. Not just those who served, but their families as well. Meeting all kinds of vetrans, and hearing their incredible stories was so overwhelming. Words cannot describe.

Managment in this particular branch of the Royal Canadian Legion was poor. There practically was no managment. In my opinion, she did not have proper training to run a business.

The hardest part (but, most rewarding) was hearing all the war vetrans' stories. They were heart-warming, and heart breaking all at the same time. The biggest thing I know that I had to get over, was that these men and women are all people, just like you and I. That's the way they want to be treated, not like heroes.

The most enjoyable, was the members. Hands down. The people that came into the establishment is what made my job so great. Getting to know every member, remembering their drink of choice and having it ready for them when they walk in the door.

The people become like family and the environment of the Legion is upbeat 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Because it is a non-profit there is a board of executives that can change yearly, thus a possible new boss from year to year

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture at the Legion is very family like. Everyone wants the Legion to be a successful and happy place for people to join and be a part of. Thus most people work together to strive for a positive environment. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Weekdays I spend a lot of time in my office returning emails, phone calls and doing paperwork or updating social media and being creative with advertising. I enjoy meeting poteiential new clients coming in to view rental spaces. On the Weekend I am often assisting with events.

A typical day at the Royal Canadian Legion for me would be me coming into work,helping with prep work,taking phone orders and serving customers. I would take orders from customers,serve them and I would also collect dishes from tables. I learned how to give amazing customer service,deal with unsatisfied customers as well as satisfied,how to take orders from large numbers of people,take phone orders and how to use a commercial dishwasher.The management there was good and they were always in control and knew what they were doing. My co-workers were great to work with and we all worked well as a team. The hardest part of the job was was having no time for a break. The most enjoyable part of the job was the customer service.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I dont work for the branch iam just a branch member just pay my membership fee very year .  Should come and join its fun there is darts play bingo play some pool as well .

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I think it would be not getting the job done as fast as they want you to ,you do a good job and there not happy about something

Doesn’t matter what nationality you are just all get along and do your job and go home and the next day will be the same

When u are doing a good job and there happy on what u do and how well u are doing your job

The legion had an overall amazin atmosphere for comfort and stability.  The patrons were respectful at al times as wellas staff.
entertainment was pleasurable and I always had a good time conversing with everyone there in the club house.  The manager was respectful and took time to help his staff grow personally and professionally.  Constructive critism was not taken offensive and he was a true gentlemen with his demeanor.


Coming from a military family, I was excited about this job. What I discovered was that the in house politics had little to do with the purpose of the legion, and everything to do with people being allowed to do what they want, when they want. Expect to meet some good people, but to be treated with very little common decency.... and those who are used to the tribulations of bartending (but the money is good!!!) be aware that you are looking at ten cent tips most days.  Those grandfathered in will have access to schedule changes, you may be cornered into back to back shifts, and to turn a blind eye to things that could have YOU the employee, charged.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Absoloutly nothing....too many people that have no idea to run a business, let rampent theft go on, then pin it on you.


What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The Executive Committee that hasn't a clue on running an establishment.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic...be prepared to have a "bulls-eye" target on your back.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Ordering, recieving, scheduling, working the bar, meeting with reps, dealing with an unadiquit kitchen....basically pulling your hair out, due to the backstabbing incompetance.

The job, itself, is not hard. Mind the bar and customers, cleaning duties, etc. Most regulars are nice enough. The problem tends to be in the politics, there are too many captains and not enough crew. The executive never agrees on anything, this half is always fighting with the other half and as the bartender you hear and see it all, and are often expected to take sides. However, if you can keep your head down, and do your best to be neutral, you're okay. Just don't manage the bar, you'll never hear the end of it...
