Royal Crown Academic School

If I did not have so many financial obligations, I would never want to leave Royal Crown Academic School (RCAS). For many teachers, the pay is actually okay. Just my personal circumstances. I loved every day of my job at RCAS.

The students are well-behaved, thoughtful, focussed, creative, and hard-working. I saw them as my nephews and neices, even though they are from various countries around the world. My rapport with them misted my eyes when I had to say goodbye. I miss them already.

The principal, vice-principal, my fellow teachers, and the office staff, as well as the custodians, were always professional and friendly. We worked as a team, and helped one another solve problems like how to do certain tasks in Maplewood. I felt a strong collegiality and mutual support, especially with my colleagues in the Science Department.

The school premises, building, and facilities are large, beautiful, and functional. We have a standard size swimming pool and a huge gym with basketball courts. There is a buffet-style cafeteria with very, very inexpensive meal plans!

Teachers have a lounge room, printing rooms, lots of storage and prep spaces. Our Science labs are well designed, and equipment and supplies can be easily augmented. More than enough computers, audiovisual, and other instructional equipment are available.

I could go on about the various good points of Royal Crown Academic School, but suffice it to say that if I were to give it an overall percentage rating, all things considered, I would give it between 90 and 95 percent. Perhaps even higher!

This a private high school in Toronto that is geared towards international (mostly Chinese and Nigerian) students wanting to go to a Canadian University. First, the pay is terrible. It sounds ok at first ($21/hr) but it's only for classroom teaching hours, about 25 hrs a week. Teachers will work doing prep and marking for 40+hrs/week, so it works out to $13/hr. The students pay $40,000/year in tuition and the owner pockets the profit. There are also no paid holidays or sick days, no benefits, and no signed contracts. The owner breaks verbal agreements about class appointments with no notice, leaving teachers without a month or two of pay and stranded. No EI is paid into so teachers without work can't even go on EI if suddenly left without work. It's brutal. Another teacher and I quit and walked out yesterday because the owner promised us a month of teaching the Ontario Literacy Course and then broke his word with a week's notice. So brutal. Avoid!!

My experience teaching at RCAS was mostly good. When I read some of the negative reviews I wonder when they were written, because I believe things have improved since then. There is a new, very capable principle and they've recently moved to a new, beautiful facility that is much bigger than the previous one.

I found management to be for the most part respectful and helpful. My sense was that they wanted the experience to be a good one for all their teachers. I was impressed by the little things they did, like holding a really nice Christmas party and giving everyone a bonus at the end of the year.
 
The salary could be higher, but this is the case with all private schools, and I actually think RCAS pays better than a lot of them. And they now offer benefits after three months.

I had some difficulty with some disruptive students who didn't seem to want to be there--I did think that management could have explained more at the outset about mechanisms for dealing with problem students, because they do have them. By and large though, I enjoyed my students, most of whom were there to learn. They were definitely the best part of my experience.

Because of their lack of objectivity and, all too often, groundless criticism, I rarely choose to read reviews, preferring, instead, to draw my own conclusions wherever possible.

However, since I became aware of blatantly false comments being posted about The Royal Crown Academic School, I felt compelled to redress this imbalance and express my own opinion, based on first-hand experience working as a teacher there.

Having worked as an ESL Teacher since 1997, I have taught extensively abroad and, since April, on contract at RCAS in Toronto. During my career I have worked with numerous schools, experiencing both good and not so good administrations.

From the outset of my working relationship at RCAS, my impressions of the school have been solely positive. The Principal and Vice-principal are hard working, supportive educators whose dealings with both staff and students alike are, at all times, characterized by professionalism, empathy and, above all, dedication. For these above reasons, I would have no hesitation in recommending perspective staff to work at RCAS.

The administration does not value their teachers or have their teachers back when bringing forward an incident that affects the school climate. For example, a student came to class with a knife and threatened the teacher. The teacher fulfilled their duties and responsibilities (Bill 157) and reported it to the principal. The principal did not support the teacher's professional judgment in suspending the student. According to Bill 212, a student that is in possession of a weapon should be suspended for a minimum of five days and the principal should consider expulsion, especially since the student brought the knife to threaten the teacher. 
Another ethical issue, the vice principal and administration do not want to acknowledge students who are "differently-abled" or who suffer from any type of mental illness. The students are not provided with the help that they need, therefore most of the students stop attending school and "disappear". 
I am shocked to know that Royal Crown is still running.

The reviews below have either been highly hyperbolized or the school has undergone a massive transition over the past few years. I thoroughly enjoyed working at RCAS. The staff - including the management - are indeed quite supportive, friendly and they have just moved to a brand new facility. 

*I feel that RCAS is a great place for new-educators who are not looking to clock in and out. As a teacher, I saved some time by not having to prepare class material from scratch, hence why this can be a great place for new educators entering the field.* Although this time should be expected to be used for marking - classes are 2.5hours so it's understandable that there is more marking in these accelerated ESL classes. 

Most students are quite respectful and many put forth a genuine effort to improve their English skills. Like most jobs, the environment can be what you make of it. Like most places, job security and benefits, exist assuming one is a competent employee and waits the standard 3 month waiting period for benefits to kick in, like most other jobs.

I had an good time working here. The people working here are friendly and enjoy some good non-related school talks every once and awhile (and not too much complaining about school related things either, which is great). 

The school gives you the pervious teaching materials of the courses you are teaching if they have been taught before which can save you time in preparing lesson plans. They give you an hour of prep time worked into your salary at the end of school day that you are expected to stay in school for. As you need to sign in and out you need to actually stay. If you need to leave early this can be negotiated. I mostly used this time to mark as they are shortened semesters of 10 weeks so there is a lot of marking in a short period of time.

The management here is good but they do not give the teaching staff much time before telling them what they are teaching the next semester. This did not bother me much but it may for you. 

Overall, this was a good place to work. I am only leaving to work in a school board.

I had a very positive experience working for RCAS! The staff and management were very helpful and polite; especially the Head Teacher. The curriculum was straightforward and worked well in class. While I was there, there were a few school events that all teachers must attend. It was nice getting to know your co-workers and being able to have a conversation in the hallways sometimes. Most of the students were great. It would be nice if the different cultures mingled a bit more and they really embraced bilingualism, instead of only using English when they are being graded.

Overall, it was a great place to teach!

The management team minus one or two expectations have no clue what they're doing. They're trying but fail generally because they don't listen to staff or collaborate. Too reactionary instead of proactive. The principal tries his best but the owner doesn't know enough about education and runs the school like a business instead of collaborating and deferring to the principal who has education experience. It's all for show and appearance - there's not a lot of substance. The office and the teachers don't speak to each other and the quality of education is subpar at best. The owner and recruitment officer will tell students what they want to hear, just to get their tuition money.

The owner cares more about building a residence at the back of the school than they do about providing an education. 
The pay here is pitiful, you could get paid more to do a simple office job.
There is no communication between the office and teachers. You are not backed up when giving out discipline, so the students get away with doing what they want, with no consequences.
They do not provide you with materials, sometimes you are required to make an entire course from scratch, often with very little notice, 
There is no cover system, so you can't have sick days.
They pay you in cheque like it's the 1980s! If you are sick on pay day you don't get paid until you go in.
The high turnover of staff should indicate how bad this school is, no one lasts more than a year here.
